Mary (madamefifi) | 202 comments My favorite for Feb. is Wolf Hall but as far as my top 10 of 2010 goes, it's too early to tell. However, the book I'm reading now--Cutting for Stone--will most definitely make the top 10!

I have been "afraid" to read these two...I found out that the author had plans for a total of 10 books, but died before he could write book four. I have heard great things about them, but I am afraid of getting "addicted" and will never know the end.

message 131: by Em (new)

Em (emmap) I think so far this year, I'd say The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber is my favourite. It is engrossing and paints a vivid protrait of Victorian London from the poorest most squalid quarters to those living in sheer opulence. Fantastic characterisation too. Loved it!

I loved that book! I encouraged my husband to read it and he loved it, too.

If you like that sort of "underbelly of Victorian London" type book, may I recommendFingersmith, by Sarah Waters.

That is such a great book. I read it ages ago, but definitely remember enjoying reading it. You are spot on with your description of the book!

I have read Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet a year or so ago and I really loved them. They were both adapted for TV too and I although the books are undoubtedly superior, I thought they did a pretty good job of filming them. I've got another of Sarah Waters on my to read list, it's The Night Watch, I'm looking forward to reading it soon though it set in at different historical era(post world war I think?!)

message 136: by Renee (new)

Renee (reneebergeron) So far for the year, my favorite is Kindred. This is the second Octavia Butler book I have read, and both have been great.

I really liked Shanghai Girls, though I would have been disappointed in the ending if she hadn't confirmed that she was working on a sequel!

message 141: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne (a-town) | 17 comments My absolute favorite from this year is The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear by Walter Moers . It has also become one of my alltime favorites as well. It's absolutely hilarious and amazing!

I totally agree - Shanghai Girls disappointed me as well. But I loved Peony in Love - just finished it last night - it is a departure from a typical "chinese lit" type of book like Snow Flower. Peony in Love is very mystical and magical, like Amy Tan's "Saving Fish from Drowning."

message 143: by Jodie (new)

Jodie (jodiemill) | 15 comments So far for 2010, I'd have to say:
1) The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
2) Land of a Hundred Wonders by Lesley Kagan

message 144: by Maria (new)

Maria | 25 comments A Room With a View I completely loved it! I knew it was a classic and even watched the movie before, but it surpassed my expectations.
It's a lot like Jane Austen's novels, but the characters are a little more complex and intriguing.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 369 comments I think my favorite of this year would be The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo..although I've read a ton of really great books this year!

message 146: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) | 202 comments I just finished The Road--why did I wait so long?? It is profoundly moving--I was in tears by the end and my kitty Arthur had to comfort me by making me pick him up and carry him around the house (he loves that).

Wolf Hall and Cutting for Stone are also hot contenders for my Top Ten of '10 list!

Mary, I'm glad to see you enjoyed The Road. I know it is one of those books that people usually either love or hate, and I am one of the ones that loved it too. Have to admit I'm a fan of post apocalyptic fiction in general, but I really loved the relationship between the father and son in this one. Very moving.

message 148: by Patti (new)

Patti (moncherieisme) | 4 comments I have two favorites so far...The Help by Kathyrn Stockett and Shanghai Girls by Lisa See; both fantastic books that will stay with you long after you have finished the books! of course, the year is far from over...stay tuned and come and visit my blog!

message 149: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker My favorite so far has got to be Saving Ceecee Honeycutt. I finished it in about a day. I was really surprised that I liked it so much because it received a lot of hype (I really haven't liked most of the very hyped books that have come out recently). I felt that it was beautifully written and the characters were amazing. And when I was done, I couldn't believe that I had ever thought about living anywhere outside of the South.

message 150: by Leslie (last edited Apr 13, 2010 09:11AM) (new)

Leslie Hickman (bkread2) | 233 comments Gosh this is hard for me to answer because I have read a lot of fluff this new year, too much family issues. But I have read a few that I liked that I would not have read normally that were good...

The Brighton Boys In The Radio Service by James R. Driscoll ...a feel good classic

Blonde With a Wand (Babes-on-Brooms, #1) by Vicki Lewis Thompson ...i know total fluff!
