Haven't read all of THE HELP yet, but looks like it might be a tie between that and THE SECRET LIFE OF CEECEE WILKES.

I guess this one would technically fall under 2009 for me(but just barely! I finished it 2 days before 2010 started!).This one really got to me as well. I was in high school in Oregon at the time of the school shootings both in Springfield, Oregon and at Columbine, so it was a very poignant point of view to a subject that was very significant when I was that age. Jodi Picoult does a great job of using very difficult subject matter and being sensitive to it at the same time.

message 53: by Elena (new)

Elena Shades of Midnight, I loved it. I had not read vampire romances in a while and I picked this one without really knowing what is was about. I was surprised at how much I liked it!

Leah, I agree. I thought this book would be difficult for me (my cousin is the principal of Columbine) but she did an amazing job with it.

I'm so sad Larson won't get to finish this series. He originally meant to write 10 books. I love his writing and his characters.

I am currently reading "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, the third book in the Millenium trilogy (I was the nerd who bought it from Amazon.com's UK distributor because I could not wait for June). It is easily my favorite book of 2010 so far. This series is so amazing, if you have not read it - you have to. Great mysteries.

message 69: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) I guess it would be "The Help" but very close behind it would be "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and "Memoirs of a Geisha". Yes, January has been a month of good reading for me.

Cyn, When you're wanting to do a pic or a link to a book on Goodreads, click on the "add book/author" link above the comment box. A box will pop up. Type in the author or title, and it will automatically add it for you. Try it. It's made posting on Goodreads much easier for me!

Elizabeth (Alaska) I will have to say that using the add book/author link is excellent, but I have trouble reading the thumbnails of the cover, so they aren't as useful for me. I do have a large monitor, but, ya know, old eyes and such.

You can also just put your cursor on the picture (at least this is what I do), and a line will pop up saying what the book title and author are. Those pictures are tiny, even with our 19" monitor! I like the links better, too. None of our eyes are getting younger. . .

message 85: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments Have to agree! Though the pictures are cute, hard to read and like the links better! Old eyes here too..... :)

message 86: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) For me, so far this year, it's a toss up between two -- Assassin's Apprentice and A Game of Thrones. They're both fantasy and both were fantastically good. I'm on a fantasy reading jag.

Last year I read #2 in the Salander trilogy by Stieg Larsson and The Help and loved both of them. There were several others from last year as well.

message 87: by Julie (new)

Julie | 11 comments I would have to say The Help and A Thousand Splendid Suns. I loved how the characters were developed in each of these stories and how in the end you were able to see how their lives were tied together. I truly felt that I was able to see into the lives of the characters in both of these novels. Both books were heartwarming and heartbreaking because the characters were so real!

A girl after my own heart! Not sure if you heard but HBO will be doing the Game of thrones series. Lena Hedley (Cersei), Sean Bean (Ned Stark), and Peter Dinkladge (Tyrion, of course =)) are all cast. Pilot is done, waiting for greenlight from hbo. I'm so excited!!

message 89: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) No! But I don't get HBO! You can tell me if it's any good. That is a wonderful book.

message 91: by Krista (new)

Krista (krista225) Hadn't heard about the HBO Game of Thrones series. Ug. It's going to be a long wait for Netflix to get the first season in, I'm sure.

I'm sure. But it might be available on iTunes before Netflix has it.

message 93: by AJ (last edited Feb 18, 2010 09:20PM) (new)

AJ (anersword) | 121 comments I actually misspoke on the HBO front. The pilot is made but HBO is deciding this month if they will be giving it the greenlight for a series. So we'll know in 30 days if it will actually happen.

In case you want to follow all the rumors/leads this blog is very good:

Sandra (sleo) Thanks. I might have to get HBO just to watch the season if they do decide to give it a go.

It is running hand in hand with The Help as my favorite for this year so far!!

message 99: by christine (last edited Mar 02, 2010 07:09PM) (new)

christine | 113 comments I don't remember if I already posted here or had another favorite thus far for this year, but I really liked The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist: The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist - a really great theme that highlight society's conventional (but ridiculous) view that everyone's role on earth is to be married and have kids by age 50.

message 100: by Donna (new)

Donna (ncdonnas) So far mine is To Green Angel Tower the last book in Tad Williams MS&T trilogy. I didn't like the first as much but loved the final book.
