Thank you for the warm welcome. I've been trying to find something to help me get more involved in reading because it's something I love to do but never make time to do it. I ran across this site yesterday and loved it. I'm so excited to get involved! :)

I would love to know more about joining a challenge. I was looking at the one for September, but I think that challenge is cutting it close for me, so I was looking at the next one in December. I think I understand what to do, but do you have to sign up for the challenges or do you do it on your own?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Jennifer, the challenges are all for fun here. No pressure. There will be one done in November too, it just hasn't been created yet. If the September one is overwhelming, why not give spelling F.A.L.L. a try. Just say you are committing to only four books instead of six. You can use book titles, series title, author, character or narrator names (first or last). Settings! Whatever.

Example:

F Foxfire Bride, by Maggie Osborne
A Attica d’Alérion in The Last Knight, by Candice Proctor
L Lucky Harbor series Simply Irresistible, by Jill Shalvis
L Lady & the Vamp, by Michelle Rowen
Foxfire Bride by Maggie Osborne The Last Knight by Candice Proctor Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis Lady & the Vamp (Immortality Bites, #3) by Michelle Rowen

Alternative*: Lisa Kleypas, author of Married By Morning
Married By Morning (The Hathaways #4) by Lisa Kleypas

*Those who know me know I'm always changing my mind.

I would start with choosing books you want to read, and then seeing how they can fit into the challenge.

Plus, most of us here have failed at a book challenge. Real life has a way of getting in the path of our reading, drat!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Tracey wrote: "Ok everybody... contemporary or historical?"

Historical. I used to just read it exclusively, but Sugar Daddy (Travises, #1) by Lisa Kleypas made me open up a bit, LOL!

message 363: by Ann (new)

Ann Noell (fantasyannie) HISTORICAL!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Carolina, you can read some (or all) of your challenge books in Spanish, if you want. CaroB, ✿Michelle✿, and I love looking at the bookcovers in other languages.

message 370: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments Really? No contemporary fans out there?

message 371: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments I love contemporaries Tracey. When you find a good one they are gold.

message 372: by Heather (new)

Heather (messybar) | 1307 comments I generally only read Contemporaries, Tracey. I can get lost in the familiar instead of forcing myself to think different era with historicals.

message 373: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments My people! LOL! I have read some historicals, and have liked a few. But I don't like all the descriptions of clothing that I can't picture and customs I am unfamiliar with. It's easier for me to get lost in the story and visualize it when it's modern and familiar. As I said there have been some historicals that I've loved, but typically I prefer contemporary stories... and paranormal as of recently ;)

message 374: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1416 comments Tracey wrote: "Ok everybody... contemporary or historical?"

Historical, hands down no challenge. Other fiction I read is contemporary (or fantasy or etc) but my romance has gotta be historical (though it can be paranormal, as long as it's in a historic-type setting). I've read a few contemporaries (no paranormals... well, except I do like books by Charlaine Harris), if they were given to me or something, but I only buy historicals. Love 'em :)

message 375: by ♫♫RiTA♫♫ (new)

♫♫RiTA♫♫ | 2 comments contemporary is way better........though historical books are awesome.

message 376: by Heather (new)

Heather (messybar) | 1307 comments I completely understand, Tracey! My favorite book of all time is a historical romance, but other than that I'm not a huge fan. Maybe my fave set the bar so high that I've given up on trying and live with my comfortable contemporaries and paranormals.

message 377: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments ok so... series or stand alone novel?

message 378: by Heather (new)

Heather (messybar) | 1307 comments I have a deep love for stand alone. However, I'm involved with several series that I'm so involved with that I feel like a traitor saying stand alone. lol

message 379: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments There have been some great stand alones! I can definitely agree with that. But I love being able to follow characters over multiple books. Nora Roberts is good with series. What series are you currently reading? I've spent so much time writing recently that I haven't really read anything in awhile. I have some old favorites that I'll read slowly, because since I've read them before I can put them down and come back when I have time. But I'm ready to get lost in a book again... staying up all night because I have to know what happens. I'm looking for like-minds and suggestions.

message 385: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments One series I am re-visiting via audio this time is J. D. Robb's In Death series. So well narrated!

message 386: by Heather (last edited Aug 31, 2011 10:31AM) (new)

Heather (messybar) | 1307 comments I'm reading the In Death series too (only up to book 6) on audiobook. I also love The Night Huntress series (just finished the newest book yesterday). There are others, but those are my current favorites. I've only read the first book in the Psy-Changeling series, but it was really good too.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I just caught up this month with the Kinsey Milhone series. Sue Grafton is getting ready to put out "V". Wonder what she finishes the alphabet? I was thinking of starting over at the beginning via audio. Another series that is well narrated.
U is for Undertow (Kinsey Millhone, #21) by Sue Grafton V is for Vengeance (Kinsey Millhone, #22) by Sue Grafton

And of course, I love Lisa Kleypas:

Wallflowers
Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflowers, #1) by Lisa Kleypas It Happened One Autumn (Wallflowers, #2) by Lisa Kleypas Devil in Winter (Wallflowers #3) by Lisa Kleypas Scandal in Spring (Wallflowers, #4) by Lisa Kleypas

Bow Steet Runners
Someone to Watch Over Me (Bow Street Runners, #1) by Lisa Kleypas Lady Sophia's Lover (Bow Street Runners, #2) by Lisa Kleypas Worth Any Price (Bow Street Runners, #3) by Lisa Kleypas

Travis
Sugar Daddy (Travises, #1) by Lisa Kleypas Blue-Eyed Devil (Travises, #2) by Lisa Kleypas Smooth Talking Stranger (Travises, #3) by Lisa Kleypas

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Helpful hint in putting in your series here:

--If you know the name of the series, when you do a look-up under add book/author, just type it in and all those books will appear in the dropdown.

--Be sure you have the button cover option selected at the bottom start clicking/adding.

If you don't know the name of the series, you can always go to one of the books and note the name in light great hyperlink.

message 393: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments I have a bit of a gripe with all the series at the moment. I can understand the marketing behind it, and it's nice to be able to revisit the characters you've connected with, but I do looooove stand-alones.
I'll get back to them when I finish reading my series :-p

message 394: by Lisa Kay, Moderator (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments I too love my series, CaroB. But you are right (again!) - sometimes is just so refreshing to read a stand alone!!!

message 395: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Smith | 415 comments OK ladies, I'm hitting the bookstore Friday (payday) I want a contemporary series, good story, good smut (whispered that part ;). Give me your top suggestion...

message 396: by Heather (last edited Aug 31, 2011 02:59PM) (new)

Heather (messybar) | 1307 comments How about these, Tracey:
Series Starters:
Naked in Death (In Death, #1) by J.D. Robb Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost Extreme Exposure (I-Team, #1) by Pamela Clare Sugar Daddy (Travises, #1) by Lisa Kleypas Truly, Madly (Lucy Valentine, #1) by Heather Webber
Excellent stand alone:
Shades Of Twilight by Linda Howard

message 397: by Lina (new)

Lina | 5563 comments Lisa - exactly!

Tracey - hmmm, not sure if it's offered in print yet, but Sweet as Sinby Inez Kelley was one I'd be confident to recommend. One of my top reads so far this year.

Sweet as Sin by Inez Kelley

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 20787 comments Sweet as Sin by Inez Kelley was our BOM a couple of months ago, wasn't it? Drat! I've been meaning to get to that one. :)

Yes Lisa Kay! I don't know if it was because I was expecting a sexy light-hearted read that this one caught me unawares but I remember being very pleasantly surprised at how engrossing a read it ended up being. Ha, Of course now I'm probably talking it up too much and you might be disappointed :-)
