WELCOME, Sarah!

You're in for a treat with the film versions of P & P. You'll have to tell us which you prefer--it's a source of endless debate in the Austen fandom.

I recommend Persuasion next but you will find a great story no matter which you read.

Enjoy and hope to see you around here a lot!

You will love those versions!!! Can't wait to hear your thoughts.
Glad you enjoyed it and I would recommend .... Persuasion or Emma next :)

Yay! I'm so glad you gave Austen another chance; that is awesome. They all have their merits, but 2005 P&P adaptation is my absolute favorite. I hope you enjoy them all! I add my vote for Persuasion as the next read.

Northanger Abbey has a special place in my heart, because it was written with such humor... very tongue-in-cheek mockery of the melodramatic gothic novels. It is really transitional from the clever, but silly, writing of her juvenilia into the realm of the novel. To appreciate it you would first want to look at a few of them to get a feel for her sense of humor as a teenager, like "The Beautifull Cassandra" and maybe "The History of England: from the reign of Henry the 4th to the death of Charles the 1st" (my personal favorites). They are very short and you can probably find them for free online.

The Beautifull Cassandra transcript on The Republic of Pemberley website. They are kind of weirdly intense about their rules/posting etiquette - so be sure to check that out if you're thinking of posting anything, but they do have a lot of cool resources.

History of England transcript with digital scans of the actual journal pages so you can see the illustrations Cassandra Austen did for it, which is kind of amazing...

Sarah (tea_chaplain) | 5 comments Hi, I'm new to Goodreads and to this group. I've loved Jane Austen (and literature in general) most of my life. I know it's a little cliche, but I have read Pride and Prejudice so many times now that it's almost memorized. I love all the movies... even the "bad" ones.

I used to think I relate most to Elisabeth or Elinor, but these days... I think I'm probably most like Darcy. ;) Most recently, I reread and rewatched Northanger Abby and it's currently one of my favorites... at least until I read/watch another one. :)

Gem (gem90) Hi I'm Gem and I'm a self confessed Jane Austen Addict. My favourites are Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion. I have watched the Rupert Penry-Jones version more times than I can count!
Doesn't matter how bad my day has been, Jane never fails to bring a smile to my face with one of her books.

Karla Kbooklover (karlaehd) | 7 comments Hi, I'm Karla, I was introduced to Jane Austen thanks to the Movie Sense and Sensibility (the Emma Thompson' s version) after that I became a fan :)
I love books and usually I' m able to read at least 2 or 3 per week ( Mainly Jane Austen books, books inspired on Jane Austen and romance novels).
One of the things I love the most is walk to the library to see what else can I read, also I enjoy reading book's reviews.

Hi Karla, the S&S 1995 version is wonderful. Emma Thompson is brilliant. There are very few S&S inspired books unfortunately, but I really liked Willoughby's Return: A Tale of Almost Irresistible Temptation by Jane Odiwe. I hope you enjoy it.

message 929: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Karla!! Which Austen inspired books are your favorites? I love Pamela Aidan's Darcy trilogy.

message 930: by Karla (new)

Karla Kbooklover (karlaehd) | 7 comments Hi Laurel, I'll add Jane Odiwe's book to my list :)
Hi Megan, some of my favorites are Mr. Darcy's diary and Wickham's diary by Amanda Grange (Currently I have other books from the same authors on my "to read" shelf), I also really liked Northanger Alibi by Jenni James (I think is really cute and entertaining).
Fortunately were I live the local library has a lot of options for Austen fans like us :)

Hi! I'm Bess. I discovered Jane through the 1995 P&P. For a long time, I just watched the movies over and over, but lately I've been working my way through the books. Has anybody here visited Robert Rodi's Bitch In A Bonnet blog?

message 934: by Tony (last edited Dec 17, 2012 09:24AM) (new)

Tony (tony_aguila) | 39 comments Hi, Bess! Yes, I have visited Rodi’s blog page. Have you read the first volume of Bitch in a Bonnet? After reading it I was desperate for the second but, he explains, other projects have held up this one so he is sharing what he had written so far, starting with Emma.

I absolutely love his work, but his take on Jane is not very popular on this forum, sadly. You might say he is the shock jock of the Jane Austen community, e.g.:

Take out passages like this, and you essentially gut Jane Austen with a Bowie knife. And what you’ve got left is pretty people in their waistcoats and pelisses, gliding about being photogenic. Which is, believe it or not, exactly what some people want from Austen. Seriously. I’ve met them. What they crave is less Jane Austen than The Jane Austen Catalog, which chapeaus and gloves and china cups you can imagine wantonly Adding To Cart.…

Hey Tony! Yeah, I have Rodi's first. I adore it! So glad to see he's back to blogging. As far as his not being too popular around these parts, well, that's ok. I like all facets of Austen, even if the snark is my favorite.

message 941: by Miss Medea (new)

Miss Medea | 3 comments Hi :) I'm an italian Jane Austen fanatic (so please excuse any of my bad grammar mistakes!!! :D ) I'm rereading emma right now and LOVING IT! I never liked it before, but this time Mr Knightley swept me off my feet!

message 942: by Jane (new)

Jane (star_gazing_janey) Hi Everyone! I'm Jane from El Paso, Tx. I've been a fan of Jane Austen for only a few years and then became completely obsessed with reading all her books, which lead me to read books from other authors during that time. My favorite is Persuasion and Pride & Prejudice a close second.

message 943: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1458 comments Some people do seem to dislike Emma - but I understand why! But, I personally love Emma!! :D good old Mr Knightley!! :D

message 944: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1458 comments And Jane, your Austen journey sounds so similar to mine!!

message 945: by Jane (new)

Jane (star_gazing_janey) That's good to know... I thought I had gotten a bit obsessed when I started looking for books involving Austen characters by contemporary authors. :)

message 946: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1458 comments No I did that!! And then I went into looking for (clean) regency romances/historical romances by any author I could find and I now have a massive shelf full of them - half read half to be read :)
