But, JK Rowling has said that Voldemort is supposed to be pure evil- and that comes through extremely well. And villains are the harder character to write, although I won't say that some heros are also hard to write- you need to be aware of how your character is being described and their actions so they doesn't become a Mary Sue.

Well yeah, Voldemort is pure evil. But she gives us the backstory behind it, instead of just saying, like many authors do, there's an evil guy, you have to kill him now. And then having the protagonist suddenly gain superpowers, have naturally purple hair, and defeat the bad guy in one fell swoop, without really trying. Yes, heroes are also very hard to write. Mary Sues are just annoying.
I hate Umbridge, but yeah, she's a great character. Voldy is even better, even my opinion. Yet, I hate Dolores more. Unless it's done by Joe Walker.
Joe Walker is fantastic. :) As are all of the members of Team StarKid. And well, technically in the HP verse, Harry could logically have purple hair and not have dyed it- Metamorphmagus's
Mary Sue's are really annoying, and I need to work on characters a bit since i was writing a fanfic and got some reviews telling me that my main characters were tending on the Mary Sue side of things.
Yes Harry could have purple hair that wasn't died...BUT do you really think your main character should have beaten the worst villain in the world as a baby, have a distinguishing star, be an incredible quidditch player, etc. AND be a metamorphmagus? That's when you border the realm of too much.Mary Sues are really hard to avoid. My main character is completely a Mary Sue. (Of course, I've been working on the same story since third grade or so. Most of the writing actually takes place in my head. It was a trick I discovered to help me fall asleep.) As I've been rewriting, I'm trying to change that...but it's so bad that her whole personality is about to change, I think.
Great list! Here are some books you might consider...To Classics: David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson, The Three Musketeers by Dumas.
To General Fiction: The Mouse and his Childe by Russell Hoban, Abel's Island by William Steig
Thanks again for the great list! Tim :)
Yeah, that IS a bit much. It's a wonder all of that didn't go to his head. :)Yeah, you've told us about it a while ago i think. ^_^
I'm sure it's all thanks to the years of suffering in the hands of the Dursleys.I bet I have. I tend not to realize when I'm repeating myself.
thanks for making the list! im always looking for more books to read. also, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull is a good series, and Good Night, Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian is a good classic
If anyone's interested, I've got a new YA Paranormal Romance novel out with plenty of thriller mystery.
Haunted by an animal attack, seventeen year old Charlotte feels she is being followed. When she runs into a mysterious boy while camping, she’s afraid. Nothing seems right about him. Despite trying to stay away, there is an unmistakable draw to be near him. Even his scent smells familiar. But the closer she gets, the faster the secrets begin to unravel. Not only is he not human, he may have a link to her past. When Charlotte finds out someone wants her dead, she is torn between love and fear. Can she trust him to keep her safe? Visit this author at

Stardust was pretty good. The movie was better though. It's by Neil Gaiman.Eon by Alison Goodman is really awesome. It's essentially about a slave girl, turned really important in the Chinese Court. It's about Dragons and court intrigue and tons of evil. the Sequel is Eona
Where's Divergent?! Divergent, by Veronica Roth. I loved that book. It's another Dystopia book, but I loved the romance and the "world"
Shoot. I forgot these awesome asian books.Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
Shanghai Girls, by Lisa See, and the sequel, Dreams of Joy
They're good, really, really, really good.
The maze runner is also an amazing sifi dystopian book! It's by James dashner . Bewitching season by marissa Doyle is a good historical fiction book . It has romance and a lot of medevial court suspense
Here are some books I read recently and absolutely LOVED!
There are lots more, just can't remember them right now.

I have lost my faith in the paranormal romance genre after the disasters that were Fallen, Twilight and Hush, Hush. Why oh why do they have such pretty covers?I think these books are like the venus fly trap. They sent out a beautiful scent (i.e pretty covers) to atrract the prey and then we, the unspecting insects/readers, come to investigate this appealing scent, then BANG! We are digested.
*Sorry to the people who like these books. Its just my opinion
Sorry for being off topic....I will recommend a book to make up for it
Stargirl By Jerry Spinelli
This would be on my top 10 list
Emily- I actually don't mind Fallen and its sequels, but there's so much Fallen Angel books out there that i've read-- they all start to sound the same, so after Lauren Kate finishes writing the series, I plan to not read any more Fallen Angel books for quite a while.
ugh, the problem is you have all these books to read, but which first????? I think i'm gonna go Scorpio races then cinder then Hunger Games 3, I am finishing pure though...

YES!! the covers are all like PICK ME UP!! and then you do...and well it brands our minds, I think i'm glad that I haven't read Hush Hush yet :)
I love the Twilight series just not the way it ended. BBut I agree Fallen and Hush Hush were a waste of my time. But here is my recomendation i have tons but this is what I'm reading right now!The Darkest Powers Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong! They are so good!
has anyone read
?? cos its not really gripping me at the moment, but I don't know if it gets interesting??
Books I would suggest: my own Gryphon Series of course; The Conduit and Embrace. Also a great children's book Ethan's Story; My Life With Autism. This book was written by an eight year old boy and describes why he views his autism as a blessing. A truly beautiful book!

I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was quite good (although that may have been influenced by other things).

See, I am opposite I quite like Fallen but didn't like Hush Hush and quite disliked Twilight.

Hello everyone. There's a new YA urban fantasy novel due to release Halloween. Codename Fairy Godmother: Reassigned. You can check out the synopsis at www.TanjlisaMarie.com
I'm not even going to TRY to compile the complete list here on this topic alone. So here's a link to my favorite books so I don't have my hands fall off trying to type them all.
