Lauren Smith Just finished A Wizard of Earthsea.

Now I'm making a double effort to complete another letter of June's word, and fulfil one of my goals, which is to read a book my boyfriend has been nagging me to read.

So I'm reading The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus.

Brilliant, my boyfriend says. What's this guy on about? is what I'm saying. Great start, but I don't read that much of the older philosophy, so I'm a little lost. At least it's very short.

Lauren Smith Let us know how A Wizard of Earthsea goes for you Lu, I'm curious to see what you think of it :)

message 256: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I read The Place of Tolerance in Islam, which was excellent, and nice and short.

Now I'm reading a western :( - The Good Old Boys by Elmor Kelton. It's for an "I'll read yours if you read mine" reading challenge on another site. I hate westerns, but we'll see how it goes.

Also neglecting my boyfriend's book The Myth of Sisyphus, and just started a book on something I'm really interested in at the moment: Women and Islam: An Historical and Theological Enquiry.

I don't think i have ever read a Western. And i think i'm ok with that :P

Yay public holiday! Its just 2 degrees and less here, so i'm going to stay in bed and read!

message 258: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yeah, I would never have read a western either, but this challenge is about reading genres you normally avoid. I've enjoyed doing it in the past, but this book is a bit lame, although not bad enough to really hate so you have the fun of bitching about it.

I read half a page about a cow drinking water :(

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Hehe atleast its providing me with some laughs :P

message 260: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Haha, well I'm glad to know it's at least entertaining someone, although I'd be happier if it were me!

message 261: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok I'm still reading The Woman in White (Optimized for Kindle) by Wilkie Collins and I'm enjoying it, yes its a slow read, but the characters are kind of cool haha.

Also reading Pet Sematary by Stephen King its weird, but I want to know what happens!

message 262: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments Just finished The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner An Eclipse Novella by Stephenie Meyer and at last starting Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead seeing as everyone has made me very curious about these books! Will be putting everything else on hold for the time being, including Covet (Fallen Angels, #1) by J.R. Ward which I started reading during lunch yesterday!

message 263: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
How was Second life of Bree? Oh you will LOVE Vampire Academy!

message 264: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments I liked it Lu, although I wasn't crazy about it. Didn't really have a lot of depth, and I think that's why it didn't really capture me in the way that the rest of the Twilight saga did. I was also a bit prejudiced against it before I started reading because I expected it not to live up to the other four books. It's not bad. That's all I can really say about it.

message 265: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments Just finished Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead and starting Frostbite (Vampire Academy, #2) by Richelle Mead . This story definitely has something to it. But I'll give my verdict after book 2!

Lauren Smith Still reading that western The Good Old Boys. It's easy reading and manages to keep my attention, but the most exciting things that happened so far were the raising of a windmill and a dog urinating on a fat man's leg. Sigh...

Also reading Women and Islam: An Historical and Theological Enquiry and just started a crime novel on audio book - The Devil's Feather by Minette Walters

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments I have started to read The last days By Scott Westerfield and just couldnt get into it nor the storyline so I gave up..I hate doing that, I have this compulsion that I just have to finish the book, but if its no good what can you do??

Then I read about 100 pages of Brick Lane By Monica Ali, and for some reason the story just didnt grip me and I also gave that up.I got both of these books from the library and I am glad that I have a back up of ebooks that I can turn too in times of dire need. :-) The thing is I dont know what to read now. Will have to have a good luck and pin something down.

Ai jai jai Lu, hehe still with Wuthering Heights? Just kidding, I think it took me about a month to read The Women in White, another older classic book...

I'm really loving The White Queen!!!

If any of you have books on Royalty please let me know???

message 283: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Phew, finally finished Women and Islam by Fatima Mernissi, my western, and On Truth by Harry G. Frankfurt. The western wasn't that bad - on the whole I wasn't that bored, nor did I roll my eyes. However, it's not something I'd read again unless I was bored. It just doesn't interest me.

Now listening to an audiobook: The Devil's Feather by Minette Walters at the gym, and trying to pick another book to suit my reading goals.

message 284: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok so I'm finally reading Memoirs of a Geisha and I'm off to a good start for today.

Starting Wings this week and I want to start The Pillars of the Earth

Hey Lu! How far are you with Wuthering?
Are you enjoying it at least? It got better for me to the end...

I'm currently reading Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden and also The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory
Both are really good.

Starting Wings (Wings, #1) by Aprilynne Pike tomorrow, and I wanted to start The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett at home, but I only have it at work, so I'll start that soon

message 291: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Got bored watching the soccer, and also with reading non-fiction, so I ended up ripping through most of Maskerade by Terry Pratchett. I love Pratchett, he never disappoints :)

message 292: by [deleted user] (new)

And how was it?

message 293: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm not quite finished yet, but it's a pretty good mystery. It's not one of the really funny Discworld novels, but like all of them, it's at least amusing. Also, I love the witches, especially Nanny Ogg.

Half way with Wuthering Heights, just no time to read, and other books distracting me. But i still like it, its just one of those short reads :(

My boyfriend has tons of Terry Pratchett books, i should really read them!

message 295: by [deleted user] (new)

What kind of style does Pratchett write in? I dont know him at all

message 296: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Niecole wrote: "What kind of style does Pratchett write in? I dont know him at all"

Wow, really? You're missing out!

You may know his novels as "those books with the funny covers", which is generally how people think of his books if they don't know them.

He writes fantasy humour. His most famous novels are the Discworld series. He also has some YA fiction.

I love him because he's always amusing, often very funny, and his books are easy reads, but never short on quality. His Discworld novels usually parody or satirise real life. He's the kind of author you can always trust to deliver a good book, even when you're in a reading rut and can't finish anything.

Highly recommended to absolutely everybody.

message 297: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Lauren, then I go check him out for sure!

I generally dont got find books by author, thats why its so great for me when people recommend a certain author...

message 298: by Emma (last edited Jul 01, 2010 02:41AM) (new)

Emma (emmauk007) | 1081 comments I tried reading Pratchett when I was in my teens but I just didnt get his books. Thats kind of strange as I do like fantasy books, but for the life of me I just couldnt understand these books.I just find them really weird.

But as time goes by your view of books can change,so maybe I could try again, so for all you Practhett fans.....

if you could recommend one book of his for me to read which would it be?

message 299: by Sonette (new)

Sonette | 384 comments Have downloaded all of the Discworlds that I could find and am going to start reading them asap! Always loved the Death books and if Discworld has the same type of humour it should be a good series! Thanks Luaren!

message 300: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Reaper Man, Hogfather, Guards! Guards!, and Witches Abroad are my favourites. Guards! Guards! is an especially good place to start. I think I started with Reaper Man, but I can't remember.

You can start with the first book - The Color of Magic - if you want, but you don't have to, as long as you start with one of the earlier books.

The thing with Pratchett is that he's weird but his humour is almost always a parody of real life, and the odd ways that people behave. Magic is usually mixed in too - eg. in Moving Pictures, what we know as celebrity culture and the fascination with blockbusters is the magic of 'Holy Wood' in Discworld. The witches use magic but also 'headology' (psychology) as well as a little modern medicine, but they make fake potions and do fake chanting because that's what people expect.

So just let go, and let the novel do its thing :)
Sonette, the humour is the same across all the Discworld novels. On the whole, if you like British humour you will probably like Pratchett. Enjoy!
