well it *is* the quiet ones you gotta look out for!
I started The Sugar Queen and so far so good.I'm VERY ANNOYED at the author of The Winter Rose. How could she do this to him? It doesn't make any sense!!!
You tell me if this is a coincidence. For the last few months, I've been requesting books from my library online. The only problem with this is that they wouldn't allow me to request MMPB books. The most annoying part is that it wouldn't tell me up front which books I could request and which ones I couldn't, but would let me go through the requesting process and then it would say, no sorry! Not allowed! This pissed me off tremendously because most of the time I don't know beforehand if a book is mass market or trade (most of them only only say paperback) and then I had to go through the whole process and then have the request denied.
During Christmas, I made a donation to my library and this month, I've noticed that I'm able to request MMPB online. I requested a book without realizing it was MMPB and then it went through. Thinking it weird, I tried with several books that I KNOW are MMPB and ALL requests went through.
I haven't read anything in the library's website that states that they changed their policy and now I'm wondering if they're allowing me to request MMPB because of the donation!
Hmmm...interesting. Did you ever call the library to find out about the policy? Is it possible it was a glitch in the system? If you haven't called, try calling without giving any identifying info and see what they say when you ask it you can receive or not. Maybe they'll tell you it has recently changed or its a glitch. I love a little mystery...keep us updated. And if in fact donating is the key to MMPBs, that's just wrong!
Bekah wrote: "Hmmm...interesting. Did you ever call the library to find out about the policy? Is it possible it was a glitch in the system?"Oh yes, I talked to somebody about it when I realized I could request trade but not MMPB (the message used to say 'paperbacks' cannot be requested online so I was wondering what was the deal.) They didn't give me any details but I got the impression that the policy was due to cost cutting measures - we've had a lot of cuts in the library budget since 9/11.
I'll ask my sister to see if she can request a MMPB book online. It may be that they lifted the policy (although why now when they are still having budget problems) or it could be that I've been requesting enough books and picking them up that they know I'm a trusty borrower that won't just request books from other branches to let them languish there. But the timing of the donation is just too suspicious. I actually don't mind that...if that did it, I wish I'd known sooner!
That's is so strange DG and makes no sense at all. I request all sorts of books online. The only problem I have is when my library doesn't have it and I do the Link for another California library, if it's already been requested by someone I'm not put in line, I'm denied completely. Then I wonder should I keep track and try later or just buy the book. Using the library now for the majority of my books has saved me a ton of money.
I should use the library more...I'm just an addict and want to keep all of my books....although I don't have a problem going through them and getting rid of some at times.

My library system has 62 branches but most of them are tiny. 95% of the books I request are from some other branch and they have to delivered to mine so I can pick them up and I imagine the cost of moving books around can become pretty steep if everybody can request everything (my library has almost 900,000 active borrowers.) As it is now, my branch is closed on Saturdays and open late only two days a week because of budget cuts. :(

We have to pay for inter-branch requests. It's a nominal sum of 50p but it makes sure you want it before you order it. Still way cheaper than buying books and as I live in a big county there are a lot of books available and I can make my reservations online.

Do what? Uhoh! I have the Winter Rose to read from the library.

So far, I've not been charged for anything - well except for a 25 cents late fee. I've received books as far away as Orange County - about 350 miles from me. Maybe here they get huge discounts for transportation or volunteers?
