I have the touch edition - PRS-650. The battery life is ok. I get around 1 week and few days and I read on average 2-3 hours each day on weekdays and 5++ hours on weekends. You could get better using Kindle but for me this is ok since I keep uploading books every 3-4 days.

I don't think you can get it in India directly. You could get it from amazon though and ship to a freight forwarder. But the shipping plus customs would amount a lot.

Divya Karthikeyan (divyakarthikeyan) | 8 comments I have been using WINK for the past 6 months without any major problem. It doesn't hang but its little slow in turning pages, but i don't think its a big problem.

Divya, the e-reader alone costs 10K INR. Factor in the shipping cost and the customs (mostly, I think), it will go past 15K+. The best thing is if you have someone returning from US to buy.

But right now, I'd advise on not buying Sony OR Kindle. Both of them will be getting a refresh pretty soon and Sony prices should going down. Kindle is also rumored to get a touchscreen. And around October-November, US has this Black Friday thing where you *might* get some good deal. Of course, it's a while from now.

If you want to get a touch screen reader, better get a Nook. It's supposed to be better than Kobo but both are pretty much Sony E-reader with Wifi minus the organizational capabilities. Sony has the best organization while Kindle sucks imo. I went mad when I tried to organize the Kindle I got for my friend.

Thanks, Vi!
But I think the new Iriver story HD will give Amazons Kindle a run for its money. The reviews have been pretty good for Iriver Story HD.

message 126: by Srini (new)

Srini (srinic) Hi Folks, hello from Bangalore. I am a new kid on the goodreads block, and already liking it. It's great to be part of this group.

Had a question as a newly published author - Are there a lot of folks in India who read books on Kindle, i-pad or other e-book readers? Or is print the only way to reach an audience? Any tips on 'how to get the word out' from this group greatly appreciated.

Hope to stay connected and contribute more substantially going forward. Thanks and have a great day!

/Srini

message 127: by Anbu (new)

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments @Srini: I think, in India, we still have better market to printed books compared to e-books. But with the increased use of Android phones/tabs, the market for e-books is increasing rapidly. But I am not sure how many are really buying the e-books.

In our group, you can put a write up on your books in Promotion and Ads folder.

You can start a discussion on your book in 'Cozy Reads' where interested people who read the book can participate and discuss.

I am one avid ebook reader. But most readers prefer real books to e versions.

message 129: by Srini (new)

Srini (srinic) @Anbu, That's a ton of great advice. Thanks! Cozy Reads sounds like a good idea. Will have to look into how to put writeup on promotion and ads folder.

@Smitha, good to see an avid ereader amongst us. these days, I've noticed my book reading is split 50/50 between Kindle on my i-pad and print editions. I probably own 1000+ books (have a little library at home :-)) and I tend to re-read the good ones every so often.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47123 comments Mod
yes, I too have 1000+ books here, and almost same no. at my parents' place. So nowadays I limit myself to ebooks

message 131: by Srini (new)

Srini (srinic) @Smitha: Terrific! Rare to see passionate book readers these days, which is why I like goodreads so much!

As a new author, i would love for you and other interested book readers to read and review my book on Amazon, if you like it of course. I am happy to send a gift copy to any one interested. Since it is presently available as an e-book only, I guess this offer is for those who own a kindle/ipad/android device :-(

Please let me know if you would be willing to spare time to read and review the book. The book is doing quietly well, and ranks around 25K on Kindle store, and around 30 in the metaphysical fiction genre.

Please take a look at the book page http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005EM6XUK and let me know if you have interest in reading this genre. Much appreciate it. cheers.

went through the amazon site. I am not much into hardcore philosophy. I like fiction. If it is fictional and wont tax my brain, I will be glad to read and review it. You can start a thread here regarding this book:

took a look at the book page. I am not a hardcore philosophy reader. I love anything fictional. If your book is more fiction and less of philosophy I would be happy to read and review it.
In fact you can post a promo on your book in our Ads and promotions thread:

just open a new topic and post your info there.

message 134: by Srini (new)

Srini (srinic) hi smitha, the book's not heavy duty philosophy or non-fiction by any stretch of imagination. It's a fiction novella with a strong metaphysical undercurrent. You can download a sample and see if it might interest you. Thanks

message 136: by Srini (new)

Srini (srinic) thanks smitha. I have another Kindle book as well - called Instant Karma, which is a collection of short stories on life in India. This is definitely lighter, and a fun read for fiction lovers. Maybe you can look into that as well. the product page is at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005FVN5R4

thanks.

touchscreen is working. I had just failed to calibrate it before using. Its really awesome, guys. Those who want an E Reader, do use the golden opportunity - Infibeam Pi 2 Touchscreen reader for Rs. 9999 plus Rs. 10000 books free (you can choose and buy).

it is awesome - much better than my Sony PRS 600. They have given 100 free ebooks - all classics. The most important thing is the gift certificate for Rs. ten thousand - which can be used to buy any book from their online store. They send the gift certificate no. via email and you can use one per one order. (one order may include multiple books). But you cannot use 2 certificates for a single order, or you cant split the certificates and use
I am so happy with this E Reader. (Touch wood)

I usually use 'Calibre' to convert other formats to .mobi before reading them on Kindle. Also, pdf is definitely supported by Kindle, I haven't tried txt or doc though.

Kindle will be my next E Reader, though Nook is also beckoning.

message 149: by Megha (new)

Megha (hearthewindsing) another thing to collect: E-reader jackets.
I had a very hard time trying to decide which cover to get for my kindle.

message 150: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47123 comments Mod
Yes. But jackets are costly, especially when you buy in foreign currency. I spent nearly 1400 Rs. for my Sony jacket.
have you used the text to speech feature in kindle? does it convey emotions of stories well? or is it just a mechanical voice?
