Axy, congratulations on your brand new kindle. Please do tell Chintan whether PDF files can be read clearly on it.

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments How much does it cost, the version 3 i mean?

message 54: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments 8499 bucks....its better than buying at amazon because after adding shipping and custom charges it comes to around 300 dollars....but i've also heard good things abt Nook....a friend of mine was singing its praises the other day....

message 55: by Harsha (new)

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments I really want to buy one, but the thought of asking my father makes me guilty.. I just hope someone gifts me one on my bday lol!! hehe!! Or maybe I can whisk some money from the caution deposit am going to get back from college when I leave..lol!

message 56: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments from my experience, only a small percentage of ur caution deposit is ever returned to u, dont bank on it, wait for some wealthy NRI cousin to gift it :-P

message 57: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments @Harsha I bought it with my own money from freelancing my parents would have never bought it for me.......

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments @aditya
well some of my friends who already vacated the hostel got the full amount i think...*hopeful* lol!
@akanksha

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments BTW, does anyone know about Wink? I heard it supports Indian languages too, which attracts me...

message 60: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments Nah no Idea about Wink....i kinda don't read anything in Indian languages.....

message 61: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments I've read abt Wink abt 6 months ago...mighty impressed with the looks, specs dont look so exciting. But looks like it's tailor made for Indians. Only ruse is, the 3G version is way too costly. Rite now i see them selling the Lite version for just 7k which is mighty cheap! But, remember it's only a 5" screen!

go to wink website. All info is there. I used to visit the website quite often some 5-6 months back, later decided not to buy Wink for the time being. They have brought out 2-3 versions. Be guided by Guide regarding technical details, though

message 63: by Harsha (new)

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments @axy(i jus found everyone calls u this, and i like the name so..)
well my case is opposite. i mostly read malayalam.. u cud say am comparitively new to english literature...nt xactly new, bt i havnt read as much as any of u here..

message 64: by Harsha (new)

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments @aditya
3G is hardly of any use 4 me as 3G networks hv not really evolved properly where i live..Wat about XTS? It is available for 8000+ as per the site..abt the specs i dnt knw wat to luk 4..
@smitha
I did do my share of research on it and found that DC books r supporting it, which makes me want to trust them..bt anyway am nt going to buy anything in a hurry... For nw il just take a membership in the calicut university library once i get back home and go the traditional way of reading..

message 65: by Muddle head (last edited May 26, 2011 11:24PM) (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments the actual usefulness of 3G is debatable. Even if a 3G network is available, u can't make full use of it for downloading books from certain sites without the flash support and a decently powered processor. From reviews, wink looks woefully slow, esp in it's screen refresh rate.

But if u r using it only for reading and if the price difference with entry level Kindle is more than 2-3k only then i would suggest u to go for wink. only advantage of wink over kindle is support for ePub format

Edit:
Btw, Wink supports Malayalam, so for u, that might be a deal clincher..

message 66: by Harsha (new)

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments @aditya
hmm.. let me see..

message 67: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments @Harsha Iv grown used to Axy:-) If you want to read books in Malyalam, Wink might be ideal for u. I asked around and people think Wink's cool. Only, its got some font adjustment problems however.....the display for some regional languages isn't all that great.

message 68: by Harsha (new)

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments @axy
thanks. anyway i am not going to rush it.. will wait and do a bit more research before i decide...

Infibeam Pi has good malayalam display. But my Pi used to get hung up often. But for the past 6 months it is working finely (touchwood)
Infibeam has recently released touchscreen version. Check on it too.

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments k smitha i'll check that too..

Akanksha Singh (akankshasingh92) | 1414 comments I don't like touchscreen e readers....amybe its just a prejudice but i prefer the non touch screen ones....

touchscreen is difficult to read. Unless you hold it in a suitable angle there is some sort of glaze

message 74: by Anbu (new)

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments I checked iPad 2 today. The iBooks app is cool. When you see it in horizontal way, it displays two pages and flipping pages is just the way we do with normal books.. :-)

But I have one doubt, this iPad has LED back-lit display for book read. Will LED also cause eye strain?

message 75: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47123 comments Mod
yes, for sure. I can barely read books in my husband's galaxy, though he claims he can easily read for a long time

message 76: by Anbu (new)

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments Thanks Smitha and Chintan.. If tabs also causes eye strain, I think it is better to go with e-readers.

message 77: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47123 comments Mod
If you are someone who likes to dab with internet games and other appliances, ipad is the one for you.
I chose E Reader because reading books was my only prerequisite and I dont usually do much socializing over the net or visit games sites.

message 78: by Anbu (new)

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments Yeah thats correct.. But for all those things I have Lap top and planning to buy an android phone. So I think I don't need an IPad.. :-)

message 81: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 1 comments Hey, just want to give a shout-out to the Nook. Got it 6 months ago and contrary to what I expected, absolutely love it! It's quite affordable at around Rs.6500 ($139) and the e-ink display makes it a pleasure to read on. I just usually convert everything to epub though it supports most formats. Only problem is getting it from the US :) And I agree, stay away from an Ipad if you primarily want a reading device.

Deerajks | 4 comments thank u Shankar and Srivats . Does the manufactures warranty apply in INDIA for nook and kindle 3 ?a friend of mine was sayin that its only in US...

message 90: by Srivats (new)

Srivats (sirlon) | 17 comments i am not sure about the warranty and how it applies. the local indian companies which sell ebook readers are infibeam Pii and wink reader..they must provide warranty.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47123 comments Mod
Infibeam has one year warranty and they are quite prompt with services, though initially my ereaders used to get hung up a lot, the current one is working well (touchwood)

Komal (komalm) | 142 comments I recently downloaded Mobi Reader for my desktop and mobile. I am hocked to it now. Though reading on mobile is not as enjoying as a big screen Kindle, but it is a good substitute, to my ever increasing expenditure on books, and piling shelves.

message 100: by Srivats (new)

Srivats (sirlon) | 17 comments @Kamal

It's good to know that you are enjoying mobi reader on your mobile. but try to restrict yourself from reading for long time in mobile as it may affect your eyes!!
