Parvathi | 32 comments I bought a few comics from the Kindle store, but I haven't put them on the Kindes yet...because they're black and white. I use the tablet for them.

Technically, the Paperwhite does support comics. Some of them at least, like Sumit said.

message 552: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Parvathi, even on the tablet, I am not a big fan of the Kindle comics interface. Have you tried the comixology app?

The comics are more expensive, but a joy to read with the 'guided view' concept they have.

For Marvel fans, things are slightly better - with the Marvel Unlimited app, where for 10 dollars a month, you can read unlimited comics.

There are a few caveats, but still it is a great deal.

message 553: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments It's true, the comics interface does have issues :/

I haven't tried the comixology app yet, it sounds good though. I'll check it out, thanks for the tip!

message 554: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Oh yes, it's got some free comics as well so that one can take it out for a spin without spending anything. Plus, they have regular discounts and deals on various comics.

The downside is that it's running me bankrupt! :P

message 555: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments Haha I know how that is! Too many tempting discounts and deals out there.

Sandeep (sandeep04) | 62 comments Sumit wrote: "Black and white covers, and while you can open (some) comics on it, no fun reading them. :)"

If that is so then guess i shouldnt buy kindle paperwhite. Probably Kindle fire HD or Google Nexus 7 would be a better option as they are multifuctional too

message 557: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Well, between these two, I would suggest the Google Nexus anyway. The reason for that is - the Kindle Fire comes with its own store and not the Google Play store. Therefore you can't install all apps available on the play store. However, no such issues with the Nexus - it is a fully functional Android tablet with full flexibility to install whatever you want.

However, if you primarily read books and not comics, the PaperWhite is awesome, because of its insane battery life. 30 days without charging? Awesome, especially if you travel quite a bit. :)

I read books on my Kindle, and comics on the 9.7" iPad, but am considering getting the iPad mini, because it is so much lighter and easier to handle.

I never get 30 days battery life. its just 10 days for me. I asked for clarification and they said its if you read 30 min per day.
who reads just for a measly 30 min ??? :O

message 559: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Well, they also say 10,000 page turns. I actually did calculate reading about 8000 without charging even once, on my travels.

Of course, turning data off and switching off the page refresh setting on every page turn helps as well.

With the light on, all calculations get majorly skewed. But still, I sometimes wish my iPad could give me even half the battery time my kindle does. :P

message 560: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments I read quite a lot on the kindle, a few hours a day...And the charge still lasts around three or four weeks. Pretty good battery life, I think.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47122 comments Mod
Thanks, Sumit and Parvati. I will try it in airplane mode and tick off page refresh (what is page refresh? )

message 562: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments Yes, turning on airplane mode will definately help, I think.

As I understand it, page refresh clears the e-ink from the background with each flash.

If a full page refresh isn't done, you'll get 'ghost' text in the background. It may be a bit annoying for reading if there's other text under the page you're currently on.

I think. :D

Thanks. I don't find any ghost letters even after unchecking the option. so am happy.

message 564: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments That's great :) I hope the battery life's better now.

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) Smitha wrote: "Thanks. I don't find any ghost letters even after unchecking the option. so am happy."

Parvathi wrote: "That's great :) I hope the battery life's better now."

Oh, lucky you, if you don't see any ghost letters. Although, I guess they appear over a phase of time. Still, the trick is to turn on page refresh for a few minutes, turn a few pages, and then turn it off again.

(It's like cleaning a slate, almost. :P )

And yes, I also hope your battery's better.

Uday Kanth (udayk) Sandeep, I have one and trust me, it'll be the best 10k you'll ever spend in your life! :)

I have the older Kindle Touch 3G (accompanied by a detachable Energizer light)- and I LOVE it! I've bought books sitting at airports for hours, waiting for connecting flights, on long train/bus journeys, and even in the middle of a desert. :)

Also, one gets to smirk at people using tablets, because one's own battery is pretty much unlimited. :D

P.S. I just wish airlines would understand that Kindles don't give out any interfering waves, and so don't need to be turned off during takeoff/landing. (Amazon has got US authorities to fix this bit, and not insist on turning Kindles off, but I'm presuming it'll take us a few years to get to that point.)

I love my paper white. yes, Amazon giving a 30% discount

message 571: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments Directly from Amazon would be great, I think so too.

And as Kevan said, do get a cover if you can. They're useful.

Sandeep (sandeep04) | 62 comments Thnx guyzz finally bought kindle PW at 10k nd irs just awesone..paper crisp display along wid a long battery life..just amazing it is

message 573: by Sandeep (new)

Sandeep (sandeep04) | 62 comments does it kills battery if i put it on stand by mode?? nd wat will be its battery life if i read around 2-3 hrs daily?? just curious to know :)

message 574: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47122 comments Mod
I usually keep on standby and 2-3 hours should give you a battery life of 10-14 days
Congratulations, by the way

message 575: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments I believe leaving the Paperwhite on standby does not drain the battery as much as switching it on and off repeatedly.

I leave it on standby when I'm not reading.

message 576: by Saleem (new)

Saleem i have a lot of pdf books with me.which e reader can handle these? I also want e reader to read malayalam..whether wink is available now?please give your suggestions.

message 577: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47122 comments Mod
pdf can be converted to epub (for nook) and mobi (for kindle) using Calibre software which can be downloaded free
sometimes PDF font cannot be enlarged properly by ereader
I remember reading malayalam, either on nook or infibeam pi

message 578: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments I'm not sure the current ereaders display pdfs that well...Conversion with calibre should work though, as Smitha said.

Last I checked Wink was still available...

Indiabookstore | 81 comments I don't have an e-reader and therefore I can't contribute personally to this discussion, but if more people here are trying to choose what e-reader to buy then I'd recommend this link: http://www.indiabookstore.net/bookish.... Good analysis, Priyanka. Although I'd rate all readers that are NOT the Kindle as very, very low.

The article incorrectly mentions that B&N has a larger collection than Amazon. In addition, Barnes and Noble is in severe financial difficulties and their Nook division is shrinking every year.

Therefore, I don't ever suggest the Nook - it might not even be warranty supported soon enough.

message 581: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments But problems apart, does the Nook even ship to India? I don't think it does.

message 582: by Sumit (new)

Sumit Singla (sumitsingla) It can be bought at stores - online and offline, Parvathi. I don't remember exactly, but I do think I saw the Nook once at a Croma store.

But, much better idea to get a Kindle for sure. If it develops any issues, Amazon typically replaces it with no hassles whatsoever.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47122 comments Mod
Nook is as good as Kindle. I love both.

message 584: by Parvathi (new)

Parvathi | 32 comments Oh I didn't know that, thanks for the info, Sumit! I agree about Amazon, they've replaced my Kindle without any trouble.

Does your Nook have backlighting Smitha?

message 585: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47122 comments Mod
Mine is Nook Simple Touch - without backlight
But I have Kindle Paperwhite too - with backlight

Indiabookstore | 81 comments Thanks, Sumit! I'll revise the article and correct the faulty information.

No worries. Thanks, Priyanka :)

Let me know if you need any more info. I've kinda done a bit of research on these things here and there.

Also, to substantiate my claims about Nook's financials, http://www.businesswire.com/news/home...

Totally agree, Qube! No frills device, with insanely good battery life, no excess weight - simple, yet effective at what it does.

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments My Nook has stopped working :'(...Well, no one to blame other than my own lack of care... had forgotten to zip my bag and it fell off :'( I feel quite miserable without it, it had been my best companion for over 2 years :'( Looking for a replacement, but I'm very confused now, as I was planning to get a new phone with internet calling facility and all that, but now I'm torn between the desire to buy another e-reader or a new phone... I can afford to buy only one at the moment and my brother is suggesting that I buy a 7inch tablet instead... but I'm unable to make up my mind... any suggestion/help would be appreciated....

Harsha, if your primary purpose is reading - nothing like an ereader at all. The new Kindle Paperwhite is quite amazing.

However, if you want a device which allows you to read comics, check FB/gmail/news/music etc. - then, I'd say go for your brother's suggestion. :)

Saleem wrote: "is there any "specification" for Micro SD card ?32 gb supported in kobo glo..pls suggest"

Saleem, no - 'specifications' are only for cards that go into cameras.

Harsh a, no chance for repair?
otherwise buy a kindle which costs only around 5000 odd (not the paper white which is costlier).
I personally feel tablets don't fulfil the purpose for a serious reader. too tedious for the eyes

checked in amazon.in.
Kindle available for 5600.

message 595: by Harsha (new)

Harsha (harshaus) | 1416 comments Thanks for the suggestions Smitha and Sumit... Well about getting it repaired, B&N doesn't have a service centre in India as far as I know, and the local mobile service people haven't even seen an e-reader before -_-. So little chance of getting it fixed... The thing chose a very wrong time to go haywire, because I was really looking forward to buying a new phone, as the one I have right now is pretty old, so it is very slow and hangs up every time I try to open any app including FB/WA/browser etc, which is very annoying... :/ So now I have to choose one, because I can't afford to buy both at the moment. :/ Maybe I'll get a tab for now and get a kindle a few months later... :/

You know what - there's a chance that it's just some wire that's gone loose - if you can't see any signs of serious damage on the outside.

So, maybe taking it to a local electronics repair centre might help, even if they charge 100-200 bucks and are unable to repair it.

Best case scenario - you save on the cost of a new device and buy your new phone

Worst case scenario - you lose some time and 200 bucks

So, I'd say the potential benefits are much higher than the potential loss. :)

Rebecca | 878 comments I got my kindle the basic one[ not the touch] only a few months back from the reliance digital store. now one of the buttons on the right side is stuck. though i can use the left buttons to turn the pages it is depressing. is it because i overuse it? I use a cover meant for tablets for it.Should i use the cover promoted by amazon? any suggestions on what to do?

message 600: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47122 comments Mod
May not be due to the cover.
you may ask anyone who repairs laptops and mobiles to have a look. A stuck button should be repairable
