message 4: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo You got some good authors there. I almost bought the Catherine Anderson one. I used to love her books. Still have one or two on the shelve unread of her's. And Diana Palmer is always a great read.

message 5: by Jess the Romanceaholic (last edited Jan 19, 2010 04:40AM) (new)

Jess the Romanceaholic (romanceaholicbr) | 35 comments I love Diana Palmer and Catherine Anderson too :)

I just read one by a new author (as in, I've never read her books before)..

Sleep No More by Susan Crandall

I don't normally do "romantic suspense" (I like my romances a bit... um... more detailed, if you catch my drift), but I really enjoyed it..

Definitely not as detailed *cough* as I'm used to, but it was a really good story and the romance was really sweet as well..

I may have to read more of her books if I can get my hands on them.

Total Count for 2010 - 31 books and counting.

message 6: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo You are probably like me you like them to sizzle (or maybe super sizzle) But at times I feel like I want to throw some of these books across the room. they might have alittle too much. I mean I don't mind some of them but there is one line out there that the one time I opened it in the store I thought it was alittle too much. I'm not sure if I ever read Susan Crandall. I read alot of Romantic Suspense lately and romance but trying to stick more of the mysteries/thrillers in too. Have some unread of Kenyon never tried her before. this year I'm trying to get more of a mix. If you check mine you will see types I read. I just don't know how some are getting 28 books and up already it's unbelieveable. I have 10 already and I thought that was good but comparing it to others I get depressed LOL. there must be alot of speed readers out there. I know if it's certain types of books I can zip though them faster than other's but still. My book count has gone down in years past and I don't know why. So that was why I was glad I found this board. Hopefully it will help me push it up higher than it has been.

Jess the Romanceaholic (romanceaholicbr) | 35 comments Combine insomnia with the ability to read really REALLY fast, and that's where my high book count comes lol Plus, I read mostly ebooks (except for older books that I can't get on my iPod lol), so I read while I'm out as well.

The Susan Crandall one sizzled, but it's like they hit second base and were heading towards third then all of a sudden it's moved on to the aftermath. I call it "fade to black love scenes" lol

And I totally know what you mean about sometimes sizzling too much lol I've been known to skim sex scenes if they start to get a bit too gratuitous ;)

10 books is fantastic! Besides, if you think about it, the 144 challenge is 12 books per month, so you're almost "done" :D

Donnajo After my 1 to 1 at the apple store I went up to borders Picked up a few new books. I'm thinking about in the future a Kindle but for the time being I downloaded the free Kindle app. to my ipod touch and one of the girls on the m/t board I'm on posts the free books when they come up that amazon does for kindle so I'm been testing them out that way. So far all I read and finished so far was the Brava one I read this year. I was using it only when I go out but I can see I should read it sometimes at home too. The one book is taking forever. But I did download a Nascar one which I usually enjoy and also another series romance so maybe I should go and try and read them. They go faster. But the power doesn't stay for long. And it's taking awhile getting used to no page numbers. Like some I like seeing how many pages I have left. I figure it's a good way of me finding out if a Ereader is worth it for me. I'm going though that stage of waking up in the middle of the night for either the bathroom or just restless and A few times I turned on the light for awhile and read and it helped me to fall asleep again. Last night I ended up coming online that wasn't a good idea It didn't help falling back to sleep. So I think it's starting to hit me now since I've been out most of the day. I looked for Crandall today and they didn't have anything but I'll be going to B&N soon which is a a bigger store and has alot more to pick from. So will check there otherwise I'll put it on the list to check the ubs when I get down the shore. I figure even though I'm almost at 12 I'll keep going because it might help in future months that I might not be able to read that many. A few times I got up to 18 in a month but those were not the usual thing so I know it's possible. I just bought a gift card for itunes so I might try to do books that way too. But at the moment I can't redeem it for some reason so will have to wait when I go back next week for another 1 to 1 maybe the guy didn't put the money on it. I don't know how they do it with these pre amounted ones. I didn't go to the front the guy took it and put my info on his handheld because I bought new ear phones that are in a case too. I've done it before and it was hard to figure out the numbers but this time it was easier to do it. But still it's coming up with a error message.

Jess the Romanceaholic (romanceaholicbr) | 35 comments Yeah I ask for Amazon gift cards for all gift-giving holidays so I can fill up my Kindle.

I know what you mean about the battery -- I turned my screen brightness way down to help, but that took some getting used to. I also got a charger that plugs into the wall so I can lay in bed and read while it charges -- helps to keep it from dying mid-chapter or something :P

On the kindle app for iPod there's a little line that goes across the bottom that shows how far you are into the book. Not quite as nice as page numbers, but it can give you a general idea of how much further you have to go..

I use the Kindle app and the Stanza app -- I get a lot of books from Amazon and eHarlequin (as you can probably tell by my book list lol)

That sucks you can't redeem your card! Ug I'd be mad!

message 11: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C ok, I got the itouch for christmas and I downloaded the kindle app. where do I go to get the free eBooks? Like donnajo, I wan to try reading it on there before going for the eReader or Kindle. I did download the Curious Case of Benjamin Button (free app) and it was OK reading it on the iTouch but I am not sold yet.......

Jess the Romanceaholic (romanceaholicbr) | 35 comments Amazon.com has several free titles (mostly classics and romance, but there are a few from other categories as well).. Click HERE to go directly to the Kindle Storefront on Amazon.com, (or alternately go to Amazon.com, click on "Kindle" on the far left, then click on "Books")...

Over on the left you'll see a bunch of categories -- choose the one you're interested in. When the list comes up, you'll see a drop-down menu on the right that says "Sort By" (I think it's set to "Bestselling" by default).. Choose "Price: Low to High" and the top listings will change to the free books :)

Ebooks can take a bit of getting used to, especially when reading on such a small screen (most of my books have over 1000 "pages" because I jack the font up so high lol), but I really like the portability and freedom it gives me.

message 13: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo There has been more christian free book lately. I did have a brava which so far it was the only one that I finished. From what I hear it's better to do the book rather than the sample (on the free part) because they don't stay free for long. I have the plug for the wall too. I'll have to lower the brightness too I guess I think I put it up when I was first playing around with it. I had a feeling that was what the line on the bottom is for. I'll have to check out the Stanza one and see what they have too. I didn't realize the curious case of Benjamin Button was free. Have to check if it's still free.

Jess the Romanceaholic (romanceaholicbr) | 35 comments I use Stanza for all my "non-Kindle" books. I use Calibre software to organize and convert my ebook library, then transfer them to the iPod and read them through Stanza.

Someone said you can add non-Kindle books to the Kindle, but I can't figure out how (keeping in mind I use the software for iPod Touch rather than having an actual Kindle device)

I, too, try to get all the free books as soon as they're available. I know I have one or two on my iPod that were free when I got them but are now $9.99 or so.

message 15: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C This is great info. Thanks so much, I will definitely be checking that out. :)

*blushes* I've been on a Harlequin kick lately...

Um.. 53 and counting. Please note I tend to read short books lol

message 21: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Harlequin kick is okay haven't been on one of in along time. They are good to get books done fast. 53 books in a month. The only ones I have of those are older Blaze and some intrigue and maybe a few of the one I used to enjoy authors of. The only ones I've been buying lately is the Nascar ones which I really like. I keep saying until I finish the older ones I have which is mostly Blaze I'm not buying any of the other's. Because they just don't get read. But maybe it's time to stick more of those in. Buy them and read them right away and be done with them. I did get one or two that is downloaded on the ipod which was free. If you haven't already tried it you should try Romantic Times Magazine they do alot of romance and series and do reviews and alot of stuff. I've been subscribing for years. B&N or Borders usually has it in their magazine section. They also have a website you can check out. I haven't been to the website in awhile but know they did alot updating on it going by the magazine.

JANUARY TOTAL 57

Geez. I need to back away from the Kindle, huh? LOL

message 23: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I just downloaded another 2 free books there. I need to read the ones I have on the ipod. You did so good with 57 books. I did 17 books. I did do a blaze yesterday so it helped with a harlequin. I got though it in around an afternoon so I guess if I stick more of those in I'll be okay. But I have so many other books I want to read. I'm busy with going out 3 days this week I just hope I can get though some reading. Maybe now on one day I have a eye exam and you know how your eyes are after they dilate them. Maybe I should find a large print book for that day. LOL.

Jess the Romanceaholic (romanceaholicbr) | 35 comments I'd die without large print lol I'm half blind anyway.. That's one of the things I like about ebooks -- I can jack up the font size :P

Donnajo Trashy books are are good books. They pull you in and don't want to get go. Your second book for february looks good. The first book I've heard of the author but never tried. I think today I'm in the mood for trashy. I was thinking about starting or restarting The Cottage by Danielle steel but maybe I'll hold off and grab a Brava book off the pile. I have a romantic suspense book started but it hasn't hit trashy yet or hasn't hooked me in yet. I wanted to go to Borders but I'm resisting and holding off. We are expecting a snow storm and the next two days I have appts out so I'm hoping the roads will be okay. I hate winter.

Donnajo You are still pushing them out. You are doing great. I finally got the Back in Black by Foster and I still haven't read it. I could't wait for it to come out but I want to get the books I have started finished. I need to get some zippable books in to bring my count for the month up. I only need 2 more to finish to get in my 12 for the month but I want to get past that. I'll probably finish the Coulter book today and I'm thinking about starting something else but really should try and push my way though the Janzen book. But it's taking me awhile to get into that book it hasn't grabbed me yet and I'm 60 pages into it.

Jess the Romanceaholic (romanceaholicbr) | 35 comments Grab a Harlequin Presents or two lol You can bang those out in no time (er.. no pun intended there) ;)

I'm SO bad about preordering book, then not even reading them for a week once they come out.. I had Pleasure of a Dark Prince for three days before I read it, even though I'd literally been counting down the days until it came out :P

message 33: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I know I can do that but I'm trying to not get into the habit of going to them too much. I already read one of those this month and one of the Brava romances. And last year I was too much into the brava and erotic type and also romantic suspense I'm trying to read more of a selection this year. But when you want to read books that are fast for the book counts that is not easy to do. Well to get 12 read I only need one more book finished and I think I can handle that. I'm hoping for more than that. I don't think it will be as high as last month because it's less days but if I can read a few more I'll be in good shape for the times that months aren't as good. I did pull a few of the older ones I still had around to read soon. I have so many of the blaze ones because I was buying them in the beginning when they first came out every month. Then I just stopped reading them for a few years. Now the only ones I buy are the nascar ones and certain authors I enjoy or some of the intique ones. I can see what you mean about them I had a nascar free one on my ipod and I got though it fast except the ipod went dead when I was close to the end so had to charge it before I was able to finish it. I do have a Merline Lovelace and 1 or 2 other ones on the ipod still.

Donnajo Plus they are great when you are reading books that aren't going as fast as you thought. I keep looking at the in the store but then I think no I'm not buying any new ones (except if they have the new nascar) because I have so many unread yet to get though at home. Mostly blaze and intrigue but that is okay. I'm pulled out a few already and read them and wondered to myself why have I held on to this book for some long without reading it because it turned out so good.

Donnajo Okay now I'm really depressed I haven't finished anything in a few days. I just can't get though the books I'm reading. I thought I picked ones that would go fast and they aren't. Now I have to pick up a reserved library book tomorrow so that will take me a few days to get though. Okay time to get offline and read (that is until dancing with the stars goes on then it will only be on commercials)
