Recyclable Actors and Actresses. (Where's The New Batch?)

That's part of the attraction to Star Trek and Avatar to me. Two huge blockbusters with barely known stars heading up the lead roles and 'gasp' the movies still made ridiculous money.
Hollywood should try that more often.

You have a point, Eugenia. But they are making less money off me, because some of the Holly A List actually keeps me away from movies. (cough*Jennifer Annison*cough) LOL.
It's not about it being the same movie. I like watching a good romantic comedy, but it seems as if Jennifer is in 1,000 of them. Give another woman a chance to shine.
Don't get me wrong, John Travolta plays a bad guy good, but should he always be chosen to play the villain in the movies they get him for?
So many people go to school to act, but so many scripts are written for a veteran.

And before the Indy market was available for fledglings. But now, Holly has its hand in the Indy market, too.

I don't go spend my money at the movies. I haven't spent my money at the movies in a very long time. We use to have a $1 theater out here and that's when I would go to see a movie. I either rent a movie, record it from TV or buy it if it's pretty reasonable.

I saw that and thought someone else could be doing that

Did you see Kevin Costner in Mr. Brooks? That was a different role for him.

I think Kevin Costner is pretty consistent about playing the same character, although I haven't seen Mr. Brooks. I've liked quite a few of his movies, having said that.

I'll watch most of anything Will is in just because I like him as a person.

For real? I didn't know this.
No one can play Norman Bates like Anthony Perkins. He's the best in my opinion. Hands down.

Let me say this about Kevin Costner. I am not a fan of his, but the Kevin Costner that we've seen in The Bodyguard is not the same Kevin Costner in Mr. Brooks.
Mr. Brooks is a suspense movie.

Eugenia,
I catch the sales. The first week out on DVD is usually the cheapest time to buy before they bump them up to $20.

And you know this.

I used to like Angelina Jolie. But I really can't watch her in any movies now. It is like watching Angelina Jolie play in a movie. IMO, she is not a skilled enough actress to disappear into a role. And her celebrity persona overshadows her roles. So it simply isn't enjoyable to watch. If it is a good movie, I'd much prefer to see a no-name actress who is good in it than a big name with too much baggage.
I recently watched The Hangover. It was so funny. And it starred largely no name actors. It could just as easily been populated with Vince Vaughan and Ben Stiller etc. But they didn't. And the movie was just as enjoyable. It says to me that H-wood depends too much on the stars and not enough on the movie. People will go see a good movie and tell their friends about it even if it isn't populated with huge stars.

I agree. It the movie catches a person attention, I believe that they would want to go see it. I know if a movie catches my attention, it could be new faces, I would want to see it.

First of all, the actor has to get onto the right productions that will get him/her the most exposure.
Unfortunately only very few movies actually get made. Even movies being headed by veteran crews are often tossed, and many of them often have very talented, but fairly inexperienced actors in good roles.
Other movies get stuck in production hell or they're thrown off the roster all together when a new exec takes over the studio. If they're lucky they'll get made and go straight to DVD, where they may or may not do well.
Hollywood is the epitome of capitalistic greed. I'm sure many studio heads share the same sentiments as many of you do, but these actors bring out the crowd so they get cast.
Many other unknown actors may also have the potential to bring out the crowd, if given an opportunity, but they're hardly given a chance to be seen. One example is Sam Worthington from Terminator, Salvation. I don't know about anyone else, but I've never heard of this guy before this movie. Turns out he's been around for a very very long time. I'm sure you'll see him get cast in more prominent films now that his name is out there AND if he got along well with the crew. Succeeding in this business is ALL about networks. You can be a piss poor actor, but if you know the right people you'll get cast. Sad, but true.
I remember seeing Sam Worthington in an Australian movie called Bootmen. I thought he was hot and I spent most of the movie checking him out instead of the lead actor, Adam Rodriguez. I'm glad he's getting his shot at fame now. Poor Christian looked so emaciated, I felt the need to stare at Sam in Terminator Salvation, instead. Although I thought CB was excellent as John Connor.

I love Will Smith, but I can't take him seriously as a dramatic actor. He's too much a jovial, happy guy. To me he's the action/adventure hero with all those funny wise cracks. lol
I LOVE Denzel Washington. I really wish he was married to me! :) I'll pay premium price to watch his movies any day.
I saw Kevin Costner in Mr. Brooks. He was good. I thought it was a different role for him. He went out of his comfort zone, but only slightly. I can see why some would consider him the same in every role.
I love Keanu & Vince, but they hardly ever act any different from one role to another, esp Vince. Then again Vince plays the type of characters that require him to be exactly as he is. lol
I think Angelina is a very good actress. Too bad I'm not so fond of her as a person.
I like when a secondary character stands out. They catch people attention and people want to know more about them.
Arch, I tend to find myself becoming fans of character actors who end up getting leading roles years into their careers.
Arch wrote: "I'm not a Vin Diesel fan, but I like the movie Pacifier. It's a nice family movie."
That's alright. I love Vin enough for ten women!

Very well said, Tina, especially the part about Angelina Jolie and THE HANGOVER. Jolie has largely become a brand, like the Beckhams. I do think she can act, and when she applies herself she puts on a good performance but her celebrity does go to her head. Her acting is mediocre in some films and my theory is that she does so because she knows the masses will go and see the movie anyway. Once you get to the coveted A list, most actors stop giving a damn.
Regarding the HANGOVER, I must say even though he's still relatively unknown, Bradley Cooper's star has been raising rapidly since he did HE'S NOT THAT INTO YOU and a few other high profile films I can't recall right now. So his presence in HANGOVER certainly lent some weight, though generally speaking you're right. A part from him many of the actors are pretty well unknown to most people.

I think it's interesting how different everyone sees the world, and their varying opinions. We all have reasons for why we see things the way we do. I don't think liking an actor is always about how talented they are. It's about their appeal to you individually, which is a complex thing. I will usually like actors for the following reasons:
--They have something that I connect with, whether it's looks, personality, their demeanor
--Some actors I love because I think that they disappear as a person into a role. They live the life of that character (but personally, I think this is dangerous because it does affect their lives. I think that the method actors have to be especially careful about this because it's hard to turn off)
--It's dangerous to like an actor for who you think they are in real life. Just wait until they fall off the pedestal. But I admit, there are some actors I like because they are/seem like good people or have given something to the world. I like Angelina for that reason, because I like what she's doing for the children in the world.
--I am not the kind of movie-buff who watches mainly Oscar caliber movies. Movies are a form of entertainment to me. Yes, they can transcend this and be used to teach and to reveal. But, a movie has to appeal to me and provide an enjoyable movie-watching experience for me. I don't like movies that are a downer. I'm no masochist that I will watch a movie that makes me sick to my stomach or suicidal. LIfe is too short for that, and I get caught up in a movie, and the images get stuck in my head, good and bad. I dislike the pretentious intelligentsia tendency to dismiss movies because they aren't Oscar-worthy. Most of the Oscar-nominated movies are such that I could care less to watch them. I realize that some of you may disagree with that, and that's fine.

Yeah me too. That boy is so fine. My son, Dylan, is a big fan of his. Dylan took me to see him in Running Scared, one of his favourite Paul Walker films. Lol, that movie was something else. I don't think I've ever heard so much cursing in one movie in my life.
I also loved the college-aged Paul Walker in JOY RIDE (I believe that was the name). That movie was made in 1996 I think, but was not released until 2006. Another example of how some films, many times with good actors, have to struggle to find a home (as in distribution company) and an audience (as in wide release).
I have Joy Ride. I had the movie for years and never watched it yet. It's still in the plastic wrap; still brand new. Well, some people probably wouldn't think of it as still being brand new. But, it is to me. I've brought it new.

Well, if you thought he looked emaciated in Terminator, Salvation, what would you think of him in The Machinist? The man was literally NOT THERE. When I first saw the film I was shocked. And VERY frightened for his health. You could count EVERY single bone in his body. He could barely move and I have a feeling it wasn't acting. At that level of emaciation I was surprised he was able to work at all. I read an interview where he said he lost MORE THAN HALF his body weight!!! That's just taking method acting on a whole other level.
Then he lost CONSIDERABLE weight to do Hans WEZBERG'S (don't hold me to this name) RESCUE DAWN.
Nobody can accuse Christian of not being dedicated. That's for sure.

And I am glad Zoe Saldana is getting some recognition in the industry at last. Center Stage is my guilty pleasure and she is so awesomely bitchy in it.

Yeah Christian Bale is very good at what he does, but he sometimes come across as a little too intense. I do like him though.
If I remember correctly Sam Worthington was pretty buff in Terminator Salvation and was pretty slim in Avatar (obviously since he was playing a paraplegic. I'm really starting to like him alot. He's a cutie and seems like a nice guy.

That's how lesser known actors get their break. That's how Bradley Cooper got to playing both lead and secondary characters now. I remember I first took notice of him in THE WEDDING CRASHERS. His role wasn't very big, but it was memorable. From then on, I started to see him popping up in more and more high profiled films or movies with high profiled actors.
The sad thing is as I was saying earlier though. You have many great actors whose work never see the light of day one way or the other. Chris Noth, Mr. Big from SEX AND THE CITY, named his bar/club in NYC the Cutting Room. Why? Because, he says, for most actors most of the times their work (good or not) get left on the floor of the cutting room (this is the room where films / TV shows get edited, for those who don't know).
Tina wrote: "I'd love to see Karl Urban in more movies. When LOTR came out, everybody was all about Legolas or Aragorn. Not me, I was all about Eomer. Hmm. He was the only reason I sat through the Chronicle..."
I'm a big Karl Urban fan. I even watched the viking movie for him. It was, not good, IMO. But he looked pretty nice in it!

I know the movie industry probably don't want to take a chance with using new people as leads, because they are afraid people will not go to the movies to see new people and that's why they continue to use veterans, because people are already used to them.
I'm all for new faces.
Jennifer Aniston doesn't need to be the lead in so many comedy movies. (I don't care for her movies. I am just using her as an example.)
Will Smith doesn't need to be the lead in so many action movies. (I don't care for his movies. I am just using him as an example.)
I want to see new faces! I want to be able to talk about new actors and actresses.
When it comes down to black woman/white man interracial movies, please give me new faces. Don't get me wrong, I would watch a Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman pairing, in a heartbeat. But, still I would like to see new faces.
Am I the only one that would like to see new people in leads?
I know that every blue moon there may be a new actor or actress, but most of the time, it's recyclable actors and actresses in movies.
