Kako I hated the ending of this book!! How could Katrik DIE?!! That's so rude! I was MAD!! And it was weird, the tree practicaly ATE him!! Oh, and Felicity is Lesbian? EEK!! How would you like to find out your best friend, who knew EVERYTHING about you, may possibly like you. AH!!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I think Felicity's lesbian-ness was a bit predictable (not in a bad way) and not too suprising. I just liked how Libba Bray used the topic of homosexuality without making it a horrific scandal. (and on the topic of Kartik's death, he was sexy)

Emma Blue I think Fee being gay wasn't bad and I was extremely proud of Libba to be willing to lose some of her fans. And a gay person isn't someone who is in love with every girl on earth. I was extremely sad about Kartik being trapped (depends on what you think happpened, he could be dead or alive, just trapped) but it fit the series, and it was a beautiful bittersweet ending.

Cobradawn I'm so glad Gemma has found herself, come to terms with her father's illness and come to an understanding existence with Tom! I was shocked that Fee turns out to be gay, but like previously mentioned, it was kind of foreshadowed- and totally adds up! I feel selfish for wanting Kartik to live and be with Gemma... I wish they could have been together and lived in India... that's a good place for them... but New York?? That was so random! You're right Emma, it was a bittersweet ending...

Emma Blue New York was kind of random.... but Gemma was not going back to India, I knew that at least. I felt very selfish for wanting him to live too. For a period of time I would see a guy and I'd be glaring at them because "He died, you didn't." Kind of extreme, but I loved Kartik and the books so much! That's what I loved about the books, they weren't "happily ever after" type books, they were real, bittersweet, the ending fit the series perfectly, and admitting that was the hardest part for me.

Kristen I didn't think there was anything wrong with Felicity being gay. I thought it was handled very well, including her own fears of what "society" would think. That doesn't differ much from nowadays.

Yeah, I was sad to see Kartik die, but hey maybe one day, when they're older... it's magic. Somehow he could come back and everything won't have to go to hell for it to happen? :)

Emma Blue Yes, I loved Fee because of how she seemed compared to how she was. And I mean, no wonder she was scared. Think about all the teasing about gays, and the kids who even get killed because they came out, and then imagine how it would be like in the 1800s, you would have been shunned!

Nina I personally liked the ending because it would have been to steryotipical happy if Katrick had lived and they had gotten married and everyone had lived happyly ever after. I dont have any problems with Fee being a Lesbian but it was way to predictable.

Devon I am so MAD at libba!!!! i hate the book now! i loved it but that ONE RETARDED SCENE made me hate the entire thing! I have a problem with Katrik dying but not so much Fee... I think it was a nice twist.

Helene (Nova726) I have to agree with Nina, I liked the ending as well. I was sad to see Kartik die, but I hate reading books that end everything so cleanly and happily.

trista I kinda knew that Felicity was lesbian beforehand, it wasn't that big of a shock for me. I agree, tough, I was horrified and angry when Kartik died!!!

Nicole Fee being gay was foreshadowed since A Great and Terrible Beauty when she accused Sarah and Mary for being lesbians. And I agree that there is nothing wrong with that and that it is a nice twist, it goes with her character really well.
As for Kartik, well, I was sitting in my science class trying not to sob too loud when he "died" or whatever you want to say happened to him. Even though it would have been too perfect if they lived happily ever after together, I felt that Libba killed off too many loves in this last book. Fee loses Pippa, Fowlson loses Mrs. McCleethy, and on top of that Kartik?! It was too much. He was my favorite character and my love for this series died a little with him.

Linda Okay, the whole lesbian thing is kind of disturbing, but it doesn't ruin the book. And initially, I was angry that Kartik was killed off. I thought 'What?? How could she?? What happened to a happily ever after?'
Especially since this is the last book in the series. I cried when I realized Gemma and Kartik were over.
But now, (after a few days have passed, and I've reread the book), I realize it's okay. It's a bittersweet ending, and Gemma now has the freedom she's always longed for. Same for the other girls. There's a hope that they all will find their dreams. (and if I sound melodramatic, too bad.)

Anna First I was angry that Kartik was killed in the end. But then I began to accept the bitter sweet ending. I still wish that somehow Gemma and Kartik could still be together....

message 15: by Liana (new) - rated it 1 star

Liana I read this whole series really quickly. I love getting absorbed in a series and getting attached to characters that I know will be around for at least a few more books. I stayed up really late to finish this book, excited that it was all getting wrapped up...and then BAM, one of the main characters was absorbed by a tree? Ridiculous! What a waste of my time! I actually bothered to buy this book since it wasn't at my local library, I regretted that decision!

Hailey I didn't like this ending... it made me cry WAY to much. They should have made someone else die, but it was a good ending just too sad. (all the stuff with that one def mina girl really confused me.)

Malia First thing's first, I was absolutely bawling by the end of the book.
And I'm going to defend Libba Bray and say that she chose to have a very different ending than anyone expected,
so that's that, you can't accuse her of being traditional and boring.

I really wish that they could have ended up together though.
I don't think that Gemma could ever find love again.

and Felicity as a lesbian shocked me. And then going to Paris and wearing trousers haha oh well, I was so agitated with Gemma's friends anyway.

Brigid ✩ Omigod. I loathed the ending. It's like, I read over 800 pages waiting for some amazing ending, and I get THIS?! Kartik turns into a freaking TREE?! WTH???!!! I was really mad. I love the series to death, but the ending was highly disappointing.

As for Felicity being gay, I didn't have a problem with it. I actually kind of saw it coming. It was the Kartik-turning-into-a-tree part that infuriated me.

Emma Blue Brigid....

I can go into intense detail why the ending was RIGHT.

You want to hear?

Hehe.

I totally agree. I was once again disappointed in another book series. I mean it was ok and everything but I'm really getting sick of tragic endings. Why can't Gemma have Kartik? I would have been happy if they just died together. Maybe. I was totally unhappy with the ending. And I think Felicity would have done better eaten by the tree since she caused so much trouble. *sigh*
I just wished the ending was different

message 21: by Evan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Evan I can't believe that Kartik died too. It made me so sad that they couldn't be together. The book was really good but the ending killed me. I can't even think about the ending because it hurts. She deserved to be with Kartik with all the heartache she's been through. With everything that has gone wrong, that could have been the one thing gone right. I agree that Felicity should have been eaten by the tree but I'm still satisfied that she died.

message 22: by Felicia (new)

Felicia I know this is really late, but I felt really strongly about the ending and I just HAD to comment. I detest it when books have really upsetting endings for no particularly concrete reasons. Sure, maybe the writer wanted to show that Gemma can now enjoy her independence as a free young woman and you don't need a guy to make you happy. But in this case, Gemma and Kartik went through so much just to be together. They found love that is untainted and pure, right to the very end, and it would have been way more inspiring and moving if the writer could have given the book and their romance a sweeter, more hopeful ending, rather than to simply kill off the guy.

message 23: by Emma (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emma I hated the ending, how could he die... it made me want to puke.... so much for suffering over 800 pages of my time for this to happen.... loved the rest of the book though.... oh kartik come back to life i beg of you... be a new book and come back!!!!
xxme

Storm I loved the whole series. My one problem with Kartik dying is that the book is all about Gemma being alone and never feeling included or a part of everything, and then the one person who makes her feel normal dies. SAD!! I cried so much when he died.

message 25: by Emma (new) - rated it 5 stars

Emma i know my sister kinda just looked at me like why are you crying... and i was like my soul has just shattered into 1000 peices and now i have to clean it up, you know how much i hate cleaning... it was just the WORST ENDING EVER!!!!

✿ℎazℯℓ - thℯ ℛock Cℎick ℱairy✿ It was last year that i read that awful really really horrible ending and until now, i can't quite get it off my mind. Yes, it needs a better and brighter ending! I demand a nicer ending where Kartik and Gemma gets together! Now that i remember, i'll be looking for some fanfictions for this and maybe, just maybe, get an acceptable ending.

Celeste Life just sucks sometimes, doesn't it?

Bittersweet ending, my butt.

Kartik should still be among the living in my opinion.

But I have to say, it was still a great ending. It really fit perfectly, even with Fee being a lesbian.

Any ideas on what Libba Bray is coming out with next?

Ineta I am sorry but i was pissed at the end, The trilogy was complicated with million things going on, but that would been okay with an HAPPY ENDING, their is no closure with Kartik becoming a tree, she died came back and just went of to america. The book is perfect if you like knowing how bad life could suck. so loved the stories till it got to the end

Ineta for emafray, for victory, for the end of time itself wrote: "i know my sister kinda just looked at me like why are you crying... and i was like my soul has just shattered into 1000 peices and now i have to clean it up, you know how much i hate cleaning... it..."

I agree when i finished i had to just sit there for a minute and try to make sense of what just happened

Zoraida I was as sad as anyone about the ending. But what other options did Gemma and Kartik had? It was Victorian England. Even if they both moved to New York and tried to make a go of it, they would've had tremendous hardships. Not to mention the realms would've been in chaos.

Sad, still.

Natalie i wanted to burn this freaking book (mainly because i have images seared onto my mind that will scar me for life) because Kartik died! I can't even believe it! I only finished it because i wanted to see what happened to Gemma and Kartik! UGH That was a waste of about 3 days

Sammy I actually really liked the ending. I felt that It was necessary for Kartik to die in order for Gemma to fully become who she needs to be.

Stacia (the 2010 club) The ending didn't bother me the way it did others, but I would have liked a book 4 reunion to happen several years later, after Gemma made her own way in the world and came back for Kartik.

Alice i was really upset about Kartrik but everything else was ok

Dayna727 Kako wrote: "I hated the ending of this book!! How could Katrik DIE?!! That's so rude! I was MAD!! And it was weird, the tree practicaly ATE him!! Oh, and Felicity is Lesbian? EEK!! How would you like to find o..."

I didn't really have an issue with Felicity, I just don't really see how it fits into the story. I mean, why is it even important? And as far as Kartik is concerned, I was pretty upset about that as well. I was sad about it for days!

*sobbing* Kartik turned into a tree!!!!

Ooh, yah! i like that idea

Aden Yes Please have a sequel it is just too sad man I cried when it ended why does the author have to be so mean like that. It just ain't right.

message 39: by Shay (new) - rated it 3 stars

Shay I was ready to rip the pages out of that book after reading how Kartik, this amazing young man who was the ONLY person I trusted in this book turns into some tree! What the heck man! I am sick and tired of reading books and watching movies that kill the lovers off. Come on! The Romeo and Juliet phase is over! I wanted them to get together because she was actually happy with him! She didn't feel alone and he was the only one who understood her. It's funny, I kind of knew he was going to die, especially with the way the story was progressing, but I had hope. I really hoped for a bitter sweet ending, with Kartik alive..
I think he'll come back though, he still talks to her XD

Now, for Felicity. I had no idea! I actually thought that the way Bray tied it in the book was quite good actually. In fact, once I realized that was Felicity's secret, I started trusting her more since I had been under the impression that she cared little for Gemma and more about what she can do, but that's another topic, lol.

...Kartik, I'm scarred...forever...

Artemis I hated the death of Kartik, but I suppose I saw it coming, since there wasn't really any hope between Gemma and Kartik, not with the narrow minds of Victorian gossipers!

As for Felicity being a lesbian, I kind of liked it, I mean this is new, you don't see a strong girl character being abused by her father and become a lesbian in every books, in fact, I'd say, in any books.

Natalie Victorian gossipers aren't a problem if you move to india or america...

Artemis Yeah, I hadn't thought of that! But I don't think that Gemma would still go to study in the US if Kartik lived. As well, how are they going to go into the realm if they left England completely?

Kelly Honestly, I love this book exactly how it is. I mean I loved Gemma and Kartik together, but if it had ended with the same stereotypical happily ever after as every other book out there, I wouldn't have liked it as much. I cry every time I get to the end. If a book can bring out a huge emotional response in me, then I almost always love it. If Kartik and Gemma ended up together, I would have just thought "Awwe how cute" and moved on with my life. Instead, I cried for a full half hour the first time I read it.

And as for Felicity being lesbian, it was foreshadowed and it fit with her character so it wasn't a big shock and it didn't bother me at all.

Iyana THE ENDING DID SUCK!!!!!!!!!!! I CANT BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED TO KATRIK , IT WAS CRAZY!!!!!!!! THEY NEED 2 RE WRITE THE ENDING AND RE RELEASE THE BOOK

Sarah Wilson ever heard of a good book, anybody? It was necessary to the plot for Kartik to die. Yes, we were all sad about it, but just b/c someone we loved died IN A BOOK, doesn't make it suck.

Yuhuh, yes it does, it made me cry so much. No book in the world has ever made me cry. If you didn't cry then you didn't fully get into the book like me. But I always get carried away with books, But then that's just me.

Artemis Aden wrote: "Sarah wrote: "ever heard of a good book, anybody? It was necessary to the plot for Kartik to die. Yes, we were all sad about it, but just b/c someone we loved died IN A BOOK, doesn't make it suck."..."

Aden, not to be rude, just curious, are you a guy? Cause if you are, I could kiss you! You are the first guy I know that actual cry for a book! That is, if you really are one...

No sorry, I am not a guy. I am a girl with parents who thought Aden is a girl's name. Oh well, but if only there were guys like that.

Artemis I know right? So your name is Aden? That's so cool! I could still give you a kiss, on the cheek and as a fellow reader of course, but I wonder if there is any guy out there that would shed their "precious" tears for a book.

Melissa Jensen I also hated the end of this series and yes, it also made me mad. However, I was pretty much disappointed with the whole series so it was just one disappointment after another. I wouldn't recommend these books to anyone.
