I haven't been outside yet...darn, is it really cold? Yesterday was in the 30's and people were insane. I saw many people wearing shorts. A little bit of over excitment, eh?

message 6202: by [deleted user] (new)

No. It's still warm and getting warmer. We'll be flirting with 50 this weekend in parts of Iowa. Isn't it funny how 40 in October is freekin freezing, and 40 in February brings out shorts and t-shirts!?!

message 6203: by [deleted user] (new)

Exactly what I was thinking yesterday, Jeannette. These people were acting like they were in Florida, but the 30's would have everyone in heavy coats in the fall.

We went to Bermuda once in February. It was about 20 Degrees Celsius, and I guess the water in the ocean was about 15-20 Degrees. All the Bermudians were wearing winter clothing and staring aghast at the crazy Canadian students who went swimming in the "dead of winter" and walked around in shorts. The water was not tropically warm, but it was certainly warmer than the Great Lakes and the glacier fed lakes of the Rockies even in summer (it's a matter of what one is used to, I guess).

My sister-in-law in Texas complains when the temperature dips to 50 in the winter. 70 in February would be wonderful! I've been in Lake Michigan in July -- it is not warm!

We just thought it was so funny.

It is! I can imagine them laughing at the crazy tourists.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I've checked my account settings. Now I need to check the individual thread settings. Thanks, Lisa. Sometimes I forget to double check these things.

Christine, what a great way to spend the day! Chocolate, Jeannette? Splendid! Since hubby isn't here, I'm going out with a couple of friends for Valentine's, and we're celebrating my birthday early, too.

Happy Valentine's Day all comfies!

message 6209: by [deleted user] (new)

Have fun celebrating, Kathy! Next time your husband is home he owes you a double celebration!

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone.

message 6210: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I've got one coming this weekend. He will be in, and we are going to go out to eat with my daughter and her family, celebrating Valentine's Day, my granddaughter's birthday (same as Valentine's Day, how great is that), and my birthday (early for my actual day, but that's okay). I wish our son could be there, but he's busy at college, and I went to see him yesterday and went out to eat.

Oh, and I am loving this warmer weather. Woohoo!

message 6211: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow! That is a lot of celebrating. Your birthday is more than a week away, so will you celebrate then, too? Just a little bit?

I'm glad you are so close to your family, physically as well. :)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kathy, Hope you get it all set up exactly as you want it.

Sounds nice Kathy. By the way, how's your tummy feeling, I tried to post a response on Saturday, but the website was down ...

Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you all had a sweet Valentines day yesterday. It's that time of year again and I've been busy planning my daughter's 5th birthday party coming up this weekend. She's all aflutter with excitement.
I've also started a tap dancing class which is a scream and so much fun!

message 6215: by [deleted user] (new)

Tap dancing! I want to come see that! :D

You would have a good laugh. It's just me and one other mom and we have a seriously good time. We giggle and high-five each other every time we get a move down.

message 6217: by [deleted user] (new)

How fun, Lee! You have to do a flip video for us!

Happy birthday early to your daughter! What are you doing for the party?

message 6218: by John (new)

John I went out and got specialty chocolates for my wife and two 20's at home kids. They asked why I didn't get any for myself. Does anyone else think it is pathetic if you have to buy your own chocolates on Valentines.

message 6219: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) John, I think you should get half of everybody's chocolates! Maybe next year you need to give some huge hints that you'd appreciate a Valentine's Day gift!!!

Lee, I hope everyone makes it to your daughter's party! Sounds fun! Is it on Saturday or Sunday?

I saw something I wanted in a store window, made my husband go into the store with me, and then I made the purchase! We were both happy with the arrangement.

And, I hope the family shared with you, John.

Jeannette, what is that plushie? Is it a manga character?

message 6230: by [deleted user] (new)

Lee wrote: "Jeannette, what is that plushie? Is it a manga character?"

Yes, that is Alphonse Elric, who lost his physical body and had his soul bonded to a suit of armor (short version of story). He loves kittens and hides them in his armor so his brother won't make him get rid of them. :)

I want one myself, seriously cute!! And, Lee, I hope your daughter has a wonderful birthday party.

message 6233: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks John, buying chocolates for yourself is not pathetic, I would never get any otherwise, even though I much prefer the books I usually get from my better half. That reminds me. At Christmas, in Calgary, friends etc. used to give us (and we used to give them) Belgian chocolates, signed "from the dog" "the cat" "the horses"

message 6234: by [deleted user] (new)

Nice tradition, getting gifts from the animals!

message 6235: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I sometimes give presents to friends "from" their companion dogs and cats.

And John, definitely don't wait until next Valentine's Day. Definitely expect goodies on Father's Day!

Lee, Have fun on Sunday!!! Hopefully by then the work part of it will be done and you can have as much fun as the kids.

message 6240: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments LOL! You all are too funny! I think I'll be able to handle its continued presence, Jeannette, just won't look at it. Or, maybe Christine is right and I should devote time each day to looking at it and saying something like, "You are not real, you are not real, you are not real."

message 6241: by [deleted user] (new)

Al is such a sweetheart. How can you be afraid of someone who loves kittens?

message 6242: by Lance (new)

Lance Greenfield (lancegreenfieldmitchell) | 697 comments I had a great evening yesterday when I visited my Dad, Tony, who lives 200 miles north of me and is very poorly right now. We went to the weekly meeting of Writers in the Peak (Dad/Tony is the man in the blue suit on the right of the picture on the front page of the web site).

The guest of honour was author Wendy Holden. The evening took the shape of a question and answer session, which was entertaining, interesting, stimulating, inspiring and exciting.

We all had a wonderful time with Wendy,, and Dad, although uncharacteristically quiet, perked up considerably by the end of the evening.

message 6243: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments That sounds like a nice evening, Lance. I just looked up Wendy Holden and looking at her books, it seems she has a very good sense of humor. Do you like her books?

message 6244: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm glad you got to visit your dad, Lance, and that he enjoyed the evening. :)

message 6245: by [deleted user] (new)

Here's the word from Borders. There is a tab on the left to open a pdf file of the store closings. My store is not on the list. I guess I do spend enough money in there!

message 6246: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been really unhappy with the changes my Borders has made, but I am glad that they aren't closing either. However, I definitely don't enjoy going there as much as I used to.

message 6247: by [deleted user] (new)

It's the only store in town, unless you count Target and Wal-Mart, so I have to like my store. :(

Lance Greenfield (lancegreenfieldmitchell) | 697 comments Maude wrote: "That sounds like a nice evening, Lance. I just looked up Wendy Holden and looking at her books, it seems she has a very good sense of humor. Do you like her books?"

I have to admit that I only had time to skim through a couple of her books in preparation for the evening. What I read seemed very light and amusing, and easy to read. There was a lot of humour in her discussion with the group. We shared a lot of laughs. You should take a look at her web site.

I was falling about laughing when she described what she did to launch her book Gallery Girl.

One reason that her books are so popular is that she starts with a recognisable, topical character, whom she re-shapes to suit her story. Then she invents a contra-character to play off against the main character, then adds places and events and anecdotes from her own life experiences. She always carries at least one notebook around with her.

I have joined Wendy's fan base on Goodreads, and fully intend to give her some of her books a go. Seven top ten best-sellers out of ten books written so far means that they can't be bad.

Note: there is another Wendy Holden who co-authors a lot of books. You need to be careful to draw the distinction.

message 6249: by Brenda (new)

Brenda | 286 comments Looks like my Borders is staying too. However, I don't use it much their childrens section is seriouly lacking. I've also noticed that my library is making some changes to their online system. They have just added about 40 childrens ebooks when before they were adding 10 or more audiobooks per month. I hope they keep adding more audiobooks too.

Mine seems to be pushing people away. I know we talked about the loud music before, and they have less and less inventory...or it seems like their section for toys is getting bigger and books is getting smaller every time I go in.
