Lori in 2010

If you know me very well, you know I own an obscene amount of books I haven't read. And you also know that I'm in college, so I never get as much reading as I'd like (silly professors, thinking their class is the most important thing in the world!). Last year I was able to read 51 books, some of were school books.

At any rate, my goal for 2010 is to read 52 books. Of these, 30 will be for MamaShepp's Gilmore Reading Challenge. And of the 52, I'd like to read 20 non-fiction, some of which fit into MamaShepp's challenge. Lastly, I am not going to count books for school unless I wanted to read them in the first place.

I'll post my progress here...perhaps even a proposed list once I decide what books I'm reading for MamaShepp's challenge (seriously, check it out if you haven't because there are a TON of really great choices!).

I'm starting with Swann's Way by Proust and 1776 by McCullough...

I had to stop reading Swann's Way because, while it was wonderful and I loved reading it, it just wasn't doing it for me; whenever I'd go to read, I'd have a hard time concentrating. I haven't started 1776 yet either. But I plan on it after I finish the book I have been reading.

While I was at Borders yesterday, one of my friends recommended I buy something by Vonnegut. They didn't have the title he mentioned. I wound up buying something else. But I remembered that I had Slaughterhouse-Five at home. I began reading it yesterday afternoon and I'm now about halfway through it. I am really enjoying this book and will have to invest in more Vonnegut works in the future. And another nice thing about it is that this book is on the MamaShepp Gilmore Challenge.

Mini-me read Slaughterhouse-Five and loved it. His personality is very suited to Vonneguts writing.

I finished Slaughterhouse-Five this afternoon. It was really enjoyable. I kept comparing it to Hemingway, even though the two authors are not really alike. But they both say what they mean and mean what they say. (Hemingway is more magical to me though)


Up next: Franny and Zooey

Finished Franny and Zooey late last night. I think I enjoyed it more than Salinger's other book, The Catcher in the Rye, because I was able to relate(ish) to one of the main characters.

I'm currently reading The French Lieutenant's Woman and Middlemarch for leisure. I'm reading a bunch of books for school, but they won't count unless they were already on my list to begin with.
