I should ask you that question. I have now read all the Connelly, Crais, Child that are available in my sad little local library and used paperback store and don't know where to go from here--I am wide open for suggestions. My favorite is Crais's Elvis Cole, but it seems just as Crais captured his character, he switched over to Joe Pike, and I really miss Elvis's smart mouth and jaundiced first person narration. I also haven't read 61 hours, but someone warned me it was the first of a two-parter and it would be better to wait until Worth Dying For is available. I have also sampled John Sanford and James Lee Burke and may do one of them next or else John McDonald's Travis McGee or Robert Parker's Spencer. I may even go further back to Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Any suggestions?

I've been thinking about starting James Lee Burke, but haven't yet, so can't comment on him. I also like Elvis much better and definitely preferred Joe Pike as the silent, mostly, partner. In terms of finishing off the series you've been reading, my library has an ILL (inter-library loan) program, so I just go in with the titles and send off requests four of five at a time. It usually takes a week or so for these types of books. I really like both Hammett and Chandler and think you'll like them a lot, but there aren't that many titles even between both. (Plus, they're a little dated now, but I like that). I read all the Spensers and liked the early ones at first, but they got tired after a while. By the end, I was almost dreading them. I like the John Connolly (Charlie Parker) stuff, but they get continually more supernatural in flavor, so you may not enjoy them. The same could be said of the Repairman Jack series, which I really enjoy, but they still seem more in line with the other authors you enjoy. They're written by F. Paul Wilson. I would start with "The Tombs" and stick with the Jack stuff (Tho' I read the Adversary cycle, as well, since they tie in). Finally (I promise :), there's James Crumley, who I really like. "The Last Good Kiss" is a great place to start. Are you interested at all in straight mystery writing?

Oops, I rambled so much I forgot to answer your question. My personal recommendation would be Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy if you haven't already read them--now is a good time since The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest has been published in the US and is not so difficult to obtain. They really need to be read contiguously. My mystery-loving best friend also recommends Ake Edwardson's Detective Winter series. You are right that I do not like paranormal mysteries as much since they give the author too much room to make up some magic hocus-pocus to cop-out on good old-fashioned detective work and physical mayhem. Could you imagine Joe Pike being surrounded by a street-gang and just conjuring up a spell to turn into a bat and fly away? Favorite Reacher book: Bad Luck and Trouble--I loved the reunion of his old MP buddies, a nice change from the lone-wolf theme. I am not as much interested in straight mysteries as much as the ongoing iconoclastic hero series like Reacher's, Bosch's, and Cole/Pike's.

Yeah, I keep seeing those "The Girl who..." books. I've been meaning to try them, so maybe I'll start them next. Right now I've started the P.D. James books, and am currently on her 4th. All the early ones are Adam Dalgliesh, so I'll probably read all those books 1st. I noticed you've read some Patricia Cornwell. I like her stuff quite a bit, although, as with other authors, I like the first 10 books or so in the Scarpetta series better than some of the later ones. I actually haven't read the last two. I also really liked that Reacher, loved meeting the old army crew.
