He didn't give up on her. She dumped him for Dimitri, who she blatantly loved more than anyone. Adrian already stayed with someone who didn't really love him long enough. He did everything for her, and she just used him.

Richelle Mead basically confirmed in an interview that Adrian is gonna be the male lead in Bloodlines. She said she can't reveal who the main guy will be, but that he was one of the love interests from VA...and there was only one of those besides Dimitri, unless you count dead people, and anyway he wasn't really a love interest.
