SOLVED!: children w/ wings--DNA injected? [s]

This may or may not be a YA book and is a series. There are children who have wings. The wings may have been different depending on each kid. Someone made them that way, possibly by injecting DNA into them? There may have been some large canine type animals as well. The canines try to capture the winged kids. The main character is a girl who is tomboyish.
