The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is one of all-time favorite humor reads. I identified with so much of it and laughed all the way through. I hope you enjoy it.

Me too! I haven't read any Steinbeck in years and have never read The Pearl so maybe I'll pick that one up in 2015.

I'm loving it. Every time I pick it up I get lost in it.

Betsy, It's only 87 pages and I've never read it before. I'm about 1/2 way through and will finish it shortly.

War and Peace and
The Novel: A Biography.
I had also started Landslide: LBJ and Ronald Reagan at the Dawn of a New America and On the Origin of Species. I have Cross Country going on audio.
As you can see, I am awash in good reads at the moment.

Thanks for the support on all of my Big Books. In looking over my reading interests for the year, I see many more Big Books to come as well.
I worry about George Martin finishing the series, too. He needs to get a move on it, but I can see how long the books take to read because of all of the detail that he includes. It is actually a very well done series. I am trying to catch up with the TV show.

so glad to hear this!! :)
re: GRRM -- we haven't watched the series either, though we just recorded a whole whack of episodes, right from the beginning. they rebroadcast from the beginning over christmas, so we set the PVR and hope to catch up... the number of episodes is a bit daunting though. ha. i guess i should just bite the bullet and try the first book. :/

Jennifer, I loved the Ng book. I thought that it was a great character study of a mixed family in the 1970s. Customarily books on this subject deal with mixed black-white families. To read something about a mixed Asian-white family was very interesting to me. Let us know how the book is.

At least it's short, so even if it's it great, I won't feel too put out about it. I didn't love the Ng book like everyone else seems to. I wonder if i would have liked it more had I read it instead of listening.

i liked it, sera. i am still processing my thoughts on it all. i feel like ng did a wonderful job giving us this flawed and broken family - but something feels off for me and i can't quite put my finger on it. the mess and the chaos was too tidy, if that makes sense? the book is part of the 'tournament of books', so i am quite keen to read the debate for this one. it touches on some important subjects that are definitely worth public discussion and attention.

Jennifer, is there a link that you could share for the tournament of books? I don't think that most of our members are familiar with it.

I'm with you, Jennifer. I liked it but fail to see what all the raving is about. And I listened to it on audio. Not sure I would put it on the top of my audio list either. I have to admit, the more people give it praise, the more my ornery and contrary self digs in my heels about it.

I'm disappointed that The Book of Unknown Americans didn't make it onto their list. It was one of my favorites of the year.

* The Bone Clocks - which i am not sold on at the ⅓ mark. it seems... affected.
* The Story of a New Name - which i am loving. i read the first book in the series a few days ago (My Brilliant Friend), then jumped right into the 2nd book.

i read this earlier this month too. i enjoyed it. it wasn't quite what i was expecting, but lepore did a very good job.

i noticed that the cover image on the edition of jones' book is © Eudora Welty, so i fell down a bit of a google hole last night learning about her photography. :)
