message 2057: by LynnB (new)

LynnB Work has overwhelmed me. I am still trying to finish the CS Lewis biography, which I'm really enjoying, but don't have time to sit down and really read. Tonight I'm going to read a simple cozy mystery...I just need some very easy reading at this point.

Sera | 1325 comments Agreed, Lynn. So many people have been overwhelmed by so much to do at this time of year that lighter reads are definitely in order :)

Cathy | 482 comments In line with the above thread...maybe not a lighter read, but definitely a shorter read (about 165 pages), I have begun Half the Kingdom A Novel by Lore Segal

LynnB I've been reading Driving Home An American Journey by Jonathan Raban off and on for a few days. I started The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas yesterday morning. And I am starting Longbourn by Jo Baker today. (I always have a couple going so I can read whichever type I'm in the mood for.)

Cathy | 482 comments I saw the film "Philomena" today. Judi Dench was superb in her portrayal of Philomena. After enjoying the movie I wanted to learn more of this true story, so downloaded Philomena Lee A Mother, Her Son And A Fifty Year Search by Martin Sixsmith on my new Christmas Kindle. A fascinating story that I hope to learn more about.....starting tonight.

Linda | 1693 comments Welcome to the World, Baby Girl! (Elmwood Springs, #1) by Fannie Flagg - audio in the car.

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert in the "library"

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins as my take it wherever I go book. I listened to it a couple of months ago, but wanted my eyes to appreciate the adventure, too.

It really is! Her position is so well known among NY restaurants that she has to come up with all manner of disguises -- which is half the fun of the read!

message 2076: by LynnB (last edited Jan 08, 2014 05:32PM) (new)

LynnB I have been helping my parents move and haven't had time to read, so I'm still working on Longbourn by Jo Baker (which I am enjoying) and Driving Home An American Journey by Jonathan Raban (essays, and I'm enjoying most of them)... though I did manage to complete Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren :) for a challenge requirement in another group.

Life gets in the way of reading too much sometimes, but we do what we have to do. I have no doubt that you will still be able to squeeze in some quality reading time, even with everything else going on.

Sera | 1325 comments I just started A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah on audio. The story is incredible, but the reader is not doing the story justice.

His optimism and survival are amazing. Ishmael Beah is speaking at one of DC's local independent bookstores, Politics & Prose, on Friday, January 10th. I hope to attend to hear him speak about his latest book, Radiance of Tomorrow: A Novel

I loved this one, but heard after reading it that there were some allegations of some of it being made up. Don't look those up though until you finish the book, but interesting to read about.

message 2090: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments Oh, I hope not, Betsy. I should finish it in a few days and will look thereafter.

Thanks for the head's up. Beah has a new fiction book out, too Radiance of Tomorrow by Ishmael Beah for those who might be interested. The reviews that I have read are very good for his debut novel.

Sera | 1325 comments LynnB wrote: "I started reading The Power of Habit Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg."

That looks interesting, Lynn. I was just reading my daughter a Berenstain Bears book on bad habits last night. The Berenstain Bears and the Bad Habit by Stan Berenstain - Sister was a nail biter - LOL

message 2094: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I liked the Habit book a lot. Maybe not earth-shattering stuff, but very interesting. I had it from the library a few years ago.

message 2095: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm finding The Power of Habitit very interesting, too. Some of it was a bit of an eye-opener to realize why I do what I do.

@Sera - My kids are all grown-up, but I remember reading the Berenstain Bears books over and over and over to them. Enjoy it while you can!

message 2096: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (chkntza) I always read the Berenstain Bears to my classes and I still have the books.

message 2097: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1693 comments For some reason, those of you commenting about The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business and kids brushed off a whole bunch of cobwebs:

20+ years ago, my son had his first earache and ER visit. When we got home we called grandma, who was his babysitter while I worked to tell her we would be staying home the next day. Son wanted to talk to grandma, so I handed him the phone and talked to grandma AND paced back and forth while talking. That was exactly what I did whenever I was on the phone. I recognized immediately where he picked up that action.

message 2098: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm finishing up The Power of Habit so I've started The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler and a new biography, The Heir Apparent A Life of Edward VII, the Playboy Prince by Jane Ridley about Edward VII.

message 2099: by LynnB (new)

LynnB @Linda - Isn't it scary when you see your kids do something and realize it's a mirror on you? Those moments sure taught me a lot about myself!

message 2100: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments I am starting The Quiet American by Graham Greene tonight. Graham Greene's writing is incredible. I am very much looking forward to it.
