I give - what's a "buddy read"? Anything more than the obvious?

message 1406: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments No, it's the obvious. I am reading it with a GR friend. I am finding that it's a great way in which to clear out some books on my TBR shelf.

message 1407: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm currently reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner , both for book groups.

message 1408: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 482 comments Helping my young teen daughter along with her summer reading and have begun reading Breaking Beautiful by Jennifer Shaw Wolf together with her. I am hoping this YA book holds her interest...the reviews look fairly good.

message 1409: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Saw this in the latest issue: 84, Charing Cross Road, so found it at the library & its sequel: Duchess of Bloomsbury Street. Has anyone seen the movie?

message 1410: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm just starting The Fear Index from our reading for this period. It's not the kind of book I would pick on my own, so we'll see how it goes...

I'm interested in hearing how you like 84, Charing Cross Road -- I noticed it also in Bookmarks and added it to my "to read" list.

message 1412: by Laurie (new)

Laurie (laurielh) | 93 comments I just picked up Scenes from Village Life by Amos Oz at the library. It is a "series of stories" in novel format, I think. I've only read the first story -- quite strange, but that is the intent, according to the jacket blurb.

Yes, I have seen the movie of 84 Charing Cross Road. It stars Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins and I loved it.

This book keeps coming up so I am also adding it to my TBR. It's cool that there's a movie out as well.

I read it a while ago and really liked it.

Becky (beckymurr) started... Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil by John Berendt

I don't usually read 2 books at once but my other book is good, just a very slow read, I needed something else too!

message 1431: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I'm reading Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen (classic), We Are Still Married by Garrison Keillor (humorous short stories) and Bonhoeffer Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy by Eric Metaxas (biography). I just read whichever one appeals to me at the moment during the day.

Kate (kateksh) | 137 comments Great reads, everyone! I liked Lemon Cake. I LOVED People of the Book and grabbed a bunch of used Geraldine Brooks thereafter which I'll get through eventually. Very eager to read Hemingway's Boat, too, but don't have it yet. Just started Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian (reading in on GR for 50 Books BookClub) and love it. The Road is a huge fave, too. Read on!

I am so enjoying Hemingway's Boat Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost, 1934-1961 by Paul Hendrickson -- I've found, though, that I need to keep my collection of Hemingway's stories and a couple of his novels at hand, as the author weaves so much of Hemingway's writing/writing process into the narrative of this biography that I want to read the actual works as I read about them.

message 1436: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I just started What The Nanny Saw by Fiona Neill and am about 100 pages in. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. Not loving it, but it is interesting in some ways. I'm waiting on judgment!

message 1437: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I have re-started Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro . I read about 1/2 and then had to return it to the e-library, but was able to check it out again last week, so plan on finishing this time. Not sure what I think about it - if I hadn't found it through the library site again, I'm not sure if I would have finished it. It's an odd story, for sure.

Cathy | 482 comments I started The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafón on audio this morning. This is my third outing with audio for this story line. I loved The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón and The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafón was pretty good, too. I understand this is the third installment of a total of four. In his hands Zafon spins a fabulous tale and Barcelona becomes a magical, exotic locale filled with lots of darkness and mystery.

I enjoyed that quite a bit, but the ending confused me and I had to reread it!

I just started

We the Animals by Justin Torres and of course I am 1/2 done since it's so short. I don't really like it, but I'll muddle through since it's only 125 pages or so.

This one has mixed reviews in the group so I'll be interested to see in which camp you fall.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I feel like I've been starting a lot and finishing none. This one is for book group. I have zero interest in the topic, so if I look at the bright side, no matter what, it won't disappoint me!

The Climb Tragic Ambitions on Everest by Anatoli Boukreev

message 1450: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Sera - I quit We the Animals. Left it at 1/2 finished. I just decided that it wasn't worth spending any more time on. I really wasn't enjoying anything about it - too dark, I guess? Ironic, because I've moved on to Dexter in the Dark (Dexter, #3) by Jeff Lindsay - which would be considered pretty dark by many! I guess I consider that "dark light" or kind of dark & fluffy! That's what I was in the mood for!
