On Chapter 7 and loving it so far. It's a unique story and the writing is excellent. Hopefully, the strong start will continue.

Nancy Motto | 450 comments I'm just starting American Gods by Neil Gaiman. This is not usually my type of book and as I read the first couple chapters, I'm really not sure but it got such great reviews, I'm going to stick with it.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments I've been struggling with A Short History of Women by Kate Walbert so I am putting aside for now. Can't decide if I've been too tired at night to absorb it, or if it's the wrong book at the wrong time. I'm going to start The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (A Flavia de Luce Mystery, #1) by Alan Bradley now and see if that grabs me.

If you like
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (A Flavia de Luce Mystery, #1) by Alan Bradley , try the audio of the other books in the series. The narrator sounds exactly like you think Flavia would sound. I love her name too, Jane Entwistle.

I read that several years ago, and although the first few chapters *are rather bizarre, I really loved the book by the time I'd finished. Hope you do too!

Thanks for letting me know. I was on the verge of giving up on it but I'll keep going.

Oh boy, the pressure! Now I have to hope you like it or I'll feel like I talked you into sticking with a book you disliked :-(

Becky (beckymurr) Started The Crown by Nancy Bilyeau

message 1231: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) Well in theory I have started Ready Player One by Ernest Cline , but unless I start reading around the clock, I'm probably not going to finish before my library loan ends. I had another one of those unfortunate times were all 4 books on my library hold list became available within 3 days! So I finished two, started just a few pages of Ready Player One, but I don't think I can sit down and finish it before it is due. Darn. I think it will back to the wait list.

As a long time consistent financial backer of my library due to fines, I evaluate how eager am I to read the book, how many people are in line for the book, and the morality of keeping someone waiting to decide if I will afford the dime-a-day fine to keep a library book past its time.

message 1233: by Sera (new)

Sera | 1325 comments If I can't renew a book, then I know that someone else is in line for it so I'll bring it back and then go back on the wait list. A few times, if the book was extremely popular and I couldn't wait, I just bought it so that I could read it and not have to wait for it.

I empathize, Victoria, 4 books on my hold list just came in this week, too. I can't see where I am in line on the list so I can't manage my holds and I don't like to be without an audio book to listen to in my car (2 out of the 4 were audio books).

message 1234: by Victoria (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I can actually see where I am on the list with our library, but these were really divergent. I can also see how many copies the library has. But these ranged from me being number 2 (so knew that was coming soon) to number 18-20. But I guess, like me, some people check things out, quickly discover they don't like it, and return it. That's what I always do. That said, I am already close to 15% done with Ready Player One - I'm really enjoying it, so I think I might get it done. I'm not sure when it's due - haven't gotten a notice from the library yet. Funny thing is - I might buy it anyway, because I think my husband and my 13 year old son might enjoy it too!

I really like the story -- I think I'm going to reread Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby as a follow-up -- it's been a LONG time since I read Gatsby, and I want to compare themes.

message 1237: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 482 comments I took out of the library for my son The Berlin Boxing Club by Robert Sharenow , a young adult book with excellent reviews. When I finished with the busyness of yesterday I was pulling it out of his bookbag last night and return to it this morning. I just couldn't resist. Once through it I am starting Rules of Civility by Amor Towles , which remains on my nightstand.

Oh what a great idea! I read TGG in college and didn't like it. I've been thinking that it warrants a re-read, and now you've given me another reason. I'm thinking maybe late Spring.

Betsy (ebburtis) | 1291 comments On the way home tonight I started listening to The Dog of the South by Charles Portis . The reader is great, and the first bit was hysterically funny. I'm hoping it continues. After loving the Coen brothers' version of True Grit, which is supposed to be quite true to the book, I've wanted to read something of Charles Portis, so here I am.

message 1248: by Cathy (new)

Victoria (vicki_c) I lucked out and found State of Wonder by Ann Patchett available on our e-library site the other night. So I'm reading that - it's pretty good. I haven't read Patchett before, I tried Bel Canto a few times but couldn't get into the story.
