About a third of the way through Mr Clarinet by Nick Stone. A little slow and I'm not sure I'm going to keep with it. I have The Help on my stack and may go straight to that next.
I just started Man from Beijing by Henning Mankell. It will be my fourth Mankell read and I have read three of his stand alone books and one from the Wallander series. Currently he is my favourite writer and I don't mean just mystery but probably fiction per se. I really appreciate his social perspectives and his artistry. Give him a go you'll like him even if you aren't the sleuthing sort.Paul

Karen wrote: "Am just starting Sag Harbor Sag Harbor. Anybody read it? Just finished Cutting for Stone which was a GREAT book."I haven't read Sag Harbor, but I also loved Cutting for Stone. It was the first group read we did on this site, and it's one I probably would not have chosen on my own. It was one of my personal favorites from last year.
I just finished Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and enjoyed it. I'm now on to So Brave, Young and Handsome: A Novel
. I loved Enger's first one (Peace Like A River) and was immediately drawn into this one when I started last night.
I'm starting
Shadow Tag: A Novel by Louise Erdrich. The cover blurb sounded interesting...a woman who keeps a diary for her husband to "find" and "snoop", and her real diary which is in a bank vault. hmmm...
I'm reading
The Piano Teacher by Janice Y. K. Lee and just starting
Postcards from a Dead Girl: A Novel by Kirk Farber.
Little Bee was very well written. Just started House Rules by Jodi Picolt. Story about an eighteen year old with Aspergers told in the voices of the boy, his mom and brother. We have friends whose son has Aspergerss. I definetly see the parallels
Marci wrote: "Little Bee was very well written. Just started House Rules by Jodi Picolt. Story about an eighteen year old with Aspergers told in the voices of the boy, his mom and brother. I read about 40 pages of House Rules at the bookstore the other night. It seemed good. I used to work with children with special needs, many of whom were on the Autism Spectrum, so I thought I'd be especially interested in this book. I have a copy on hold and am waiting to pick it up next week when it will, hopefully, be on the best seller list for an additional percentage off. I am very interested to hear what you think of it, Marci.
Patti wrote: "Becky, what do you think of this book, I haven't read it yet. I have her newest one also to read."so far I like it....she is always an easy read for me. I had no idea what this story line was & when I started to read it I was surprised to see what the medical condition of the child in the story was. My sister has this too....
I just started Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris after many of you in this group had positive things to say about it. I have not previously read Harris's "Chocolat," nor seen the movie. I like that this book has a darker, hidden meaning in the scrapbook of recipes left to Framboise. I am glad it is not just a fluff story about the joy of cooking and foods. I look forward to the mystery being revealed.
Trying to go to my loaded book shelves & read some books that have been here awhile....just starting...The River King
I'm reading Sima's Undergarments for Women (an ARC), and just starting On the Beach and David Copperfield -- though with the size of the Dickens book, I'm afraid it's going to be read slowly, maybe a chapter or two a day? So it's going to be on my list quite a while!

"Enjoy Becky! I love Alice Hoffman - I consider her a slightly guilty pleasure and I have to be in the right mood. I liked this one.
I just started
. I need a quick, easy read that really draws me in as my life is in upheaval right now! We sold our house and have not yet bought another, so all my stuff is in storage and I've moved back to my parents after 15+ years with toddler in tow. You should have seen me picking out what books to keep out and which ones to send to storage! It wasn't a pretty scene (LOL)! My husband works out of town (closer to where we are looking to move) and we only get to see him on weekends. :( Oh, and I just finished Little Bee, which was quite sad.
Jaime, your life sounds chaotic right now, but I guess in a way you have a good problem. Houses are taking so long to sell in this market, at least you aren't stuck with two mortgages. You're reading another book, The Secret Life Of CeeCee Wilkes, that is sitting on my desk waiting it's turn in line. We must be on the same wavelength.

Thanks, Patti and Lisa! Yeah, we really thought that we would have the opposite problem with buying/selling a house. But, our house is located in an area where people are really starting to move to in this region. We actually had a bidding war on our home! But, buying? What a nightmare! We've been under contract twice and have broken both contracts due to inspection issues (roofing issues with both, actually). You would think we're looking at fixer-uppers, but it's not the case by any means. Grrrr....frustrating!

That's a goodie! I am starting a different CeeCee book,

Reading The House at Riverton by Kate Morton and really enjoying it - it's a great upstairs/downstairs at the end of that era with a mystery. Have her other book - Forgotten Garden on the waiting list.

"I have put this on hold, my book for my book group has finally arrived so I am reading
A Thousand Splendid Suns
I think a few of you have been spying my stack of to-read books, which are sitting on my desk. I swear every time someone posts, I say uh-huh, got that one right here waiting for me.
Dottie wrote: "Reading The House at Riverton by Kate Morton and really enjoying it - it's a great upstairs/downstairs at the end of that era with a mystery. Have her other book - Forgotten Garden on the waiting ..."Dottie,
I read "The Forgotten Garden"..all 549 pages of it last year. I did not read "The House of Riverton". I really enjoyed the plot and characters of "The Forgotten Garden" and needed to jot a few notes to keep the characters and time sequence straight, but I didn't mind. I really loved how the story unfolded, but when I gave it to a co-worker she was not as readily impressed. She thought it was borderline fluff literature. I loved it...a very good one that I couldn't put down. Should I consider returning to the author and read "The House of Riverton"?
I have The Forgotten Garden and The House of Riverton, and plan to read them both soon. I have lots of GR friends who have given The House of Riverton high ratings.
Cathy - Haven't read the Forgotten Garden yet - I bought it because it was highly recommended by about three friends - I am still enjoying The House at Riverton. It is certainly not challenging literature but what's wrong with reading a book you just enjoy?
I'd never heard of the Forgotten Garden, or the author. This sounds really good! I'm going to check it out.
I think everyone here is spying on my bookshelves or maybe great minds think alike? Jaime I have about 50 pages left in House Rules I want to read but I don't want it to end!! I also read the House of Riverton which I loved I have Forgotten Garden, Saving Cee Cee Wilkes along with about 200 hundred others I buy much faster than I can read!! I am waiting for the newest Spellman Book by Lisa Lutz to be delivered today. She is hilarious!!!
Simone wrote: "I'd never heard of the Forgotten Garden, or the author. This sounds really good! I'm going to check it out."My book group is reading this as our "spring" read, I don't have it yet
Cathy - another thought. If your friend who felt The House at Riverton wasn't challenging enough, you might recommend The Accidental by Ali Smith - was shortlisted for the Man Booker and won several awards. It is written in third person stream of consciousness - 5 voices.
Cathy wrote: "Dottie wrote: "Reading The House at Riverton by Kate Morton and really enjoying it - it's a great upstairs/downstairs at the end of that era with a mystery. Have her other book - Forgotten Garden ..."I had just finished Brideshead revisited when I read The House at Riverton. I thought they were similar in that they both explored the decline of the British leisure class. They also both were slow paced in a good way. I read a lot of books that I can get through in a couple of days and both these books force you to take a breath and slow down. I thought The Forgotten Garden was similar in pace and tone. I would recommend reading both of Kate Morton's books.
Just finished House Rules which I really liked. Now ready The spellmans Strikes again. I'm so excited. I get such a kick out of this series
I have not posted in this thread for a long time (bad moderator!) so I will update you now. Do not be alarmed at the number of books I am currently reading. I am completely into book polygamy for the sake of my mood. Wuthering Heights
The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane
The Wednesday Sisters
Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned: Stories
Commencement: A Novel
The Financial Lives of the Poets
Lark and Termite
Last night I started the thriller/suspense/crime bookBlue Heaven
by C. J. Box. It's the first book of his I've read and I'm thinking someone here must have recommended it because it's not on the Bookmarks site and I don't know how else I would have heard of it. I was immediately drawn into the story. I'll keep you posted.
Stephanie wrote: "I am completely into book polygamy for t..."I loved Lark and Termite. Very interesting book.
I've just started The Awakening for RL book club.
