These are for the people who don't have a library to get manga at a store like me.
www.anymanga.com
www.onemanga.com
www.mangafox.com
www.mangatoshokan.com
There are more but I get on these sites.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Actually, I switched to Mangafox.

message 10: by No One (last edited Jun 01, 2010 05:31AM) (new)

No One (baka) manga.animea.net isn't all that bad either. I love how you can see some pictures from the manga when you click the manga and read the description. It's better than relying on just one cover picture, because sometimes the cover can trick you.

Jazz | 41 comments Mangafox isn't shutting down but they took off all the licensed manga like bleach and naruto. Still sad though. T^T

I know, right? I asked some people online where I can find other sites to read them. At least the popular WSJ ones, like Naruto and Bleach, I can read them at sites like MangaStream and some other that I forgot.

I'm going to miss OM due to the variety it gave me to read online. It really SUCKS big time.

message 18: by No One (new)

No One (baka) Thank God! Mangafox is my favorite, but without Onemanga life won't be quite the same.

message 19: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 42 comments Yeah, it's so sad. I'm hoping they do what they started doing with asian dramas and anime. Now we can watch them with permission from the rightholders through Crunchyroll.

Kadie D♥ | 7 comments www.unixmanga.com is also a good one.

message 24: by Lear (new)

Lear | 56 comments I switch between mangafox and spectrum nexus.
Spectrum Nexus (http://www.thespectrum.net/) has a small selection but it's all quality stuff. they don't care about licenses, they just request that if it's available in your area you support the artist.

I've also heard rumor that Tokyopop is going to start providing free manga online because it's more profitable to have advertising on the site then to print.

message 25: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 42 comments It would be quite convenient if they did that. I rather pay a monthly fee for as many reading as i want to do in with a publisher. I'm all for respecting the licenses but they need to make the reading more convenient for us. That's the reason we go to those online site to read there instead of sometimes buying the books.

message 26: by Lear (new)

Lear | 56 comments Honestly i go to them because i like seinen manga and few publishers bother with that. Yen Press, Del Rey, a handful of Viz titles, and the now defunct CMX are about it for American seinen publishers.

Since the likelihood of them getting licensed in America is low why shouldn't i read them online. Heck scanlation is responsible for some series even getting licensed, the most prominent one of them being Fruits Basket.

message 27: by Starbubbles, Respected Elder (new)

Starbubbles | 871 comments Mod
i think that could be an interesting marketing ploy. scan stuff they are thinking about publishing and have it available for free, and if it does well, publish it. i personally prefer the physical copies of things, but culturally speaking, we're at the precipice of changing the medium of obtaining and having things. i might just be stuck in the past

i'm not surprised. computers at school are for research, typing, and training through media. the school district would be blamed if kids could access "inappropriate" things that are sometimes presented in manga. besides, i think parents would be upset if they felt their tax dollars were being wasted on a pursuit that doesn't add "value" to their kids' edu. my high school back in the day had some manga for check out, so i don't really see it as being much different

Very true I get what you are saying. But I would like to read some when I get everything done and just want to read manga instead of going to the school library without like any manga at all.

message 36: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 42 comments I support the industry plenty, but i need to know that what am buying will be worth it. It's not like i'm buying a single book and be done with it, i have to buy an entire series sometimes with up to 20 volumes.

message 37: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 42 comments Totally agree. I feel bad because sometimes it's due to health issues, but i honestly would even settle for a novel instead of the manga to tie us over until they feel better.

dn angel is like that! i'm so upset! plus, many series have been increasing their prices as they continue. i have series that started at 8.99 and are up to 10.99 now. soo lame!
i like to use online sites to fill in the volumes that i couldn't find in the store. i need to get better control of my budget, and that sadly means cutting back on my book purchases. darn borders and their closing store prices!

I agree I mean all of the manga books that are here (very little) are $10 a piece, and I don't have money right now to buy them at that price T.T

message 40: by Peachlove (new)

Peachlove | 1 comments You know what's so funny...we actually have Manga available both in my school library and my community library. There isn't a wide selection, but hey. Also -- you can buy some cheap manga on bay or amazon.

message 41: by Jucchan (new)

Jucchan I use http://www.mangafox.com/ for most of my "addiction" to manga, as it is the page with most uploaded mangas (: For those missing, they can usually be found at http://www.animea.net/ (yes, they have manga xD) ... But for the most popular ones, like Bleach, One Piece and Naruto, http://www.mangastream.com/ is the best - as they themselves clean and translate ^^

message 43: by Jucchan (new)

Jucchan Dustin wrote: "Please, buy the manga and support the industry."

I do buy them (: I have just a bit over 300 manga-books, but it's a bit expensive hobby when you live in Denmark, so when I'm broke, I've got to find something on the internet, read it, and later buy it ^_^

Dots of Springtempo mangareader.net!!
only place i use
i remember for about one chapter of gakuen alice the scans were from mangafox, but other than that, i really like mangareader.
it's easily accessible, even on my phone, and the low-broadband browser can load it hehehe
i haven't actually tried any other sites...

This message comes really late as I just stopped by to find a good site that won't crash my computer (like mangafox does)...but I wanted to put my two cents in for people talking about the price of manga.

The best way to buy manga is used on Amazon. I think the most I've ever paid for one of my manga books (and I have A LOT) through this way of purchasing was.... 6 bucks maybe? That's including shipping and handling. You can find manga in very good condition for REALLY cheap on Amazon. So if you want to buy and don't feel like paying the full 10 dollar price, go there. I also buy all my anime that way because anime is ridiculously expensive and the most I've ever spent buying anime on Amazon was 15 dollars (I also own a lot of anime too ^^; )

So, onto the topic, there are a lot of sites listed here. Does anyone have one or two recommended that are both 1) Safe sites to visit and 2) Have decent translations. I want to finish reading a few series that abruptly ended due to Tokyopop going out of business but a lot of these sites are not safe. So wondering if anyone knew for sure which ones wouldn't kill my computer.

Thanks!

message 50: by Starbubbles, Respected Elder (new)

Starbubbles | 871 comments Mod
A safe site? I'm not so sure. You can try Manga Park. They seem to have a decent list, but I haven't played around with the site enough to know how safe they are. I have noticed that many of these sites share the same translation, so the variance between them isn't too great.

I buy lots of used stuff too. The danger with buying used is that neither the publisher, nor the author gets any revenue from that sale. Though honestly, Tokyopop has been having issues finishing series for a lot longer than this most recent disaster. I should have been paying attention to publishers before. Oh well. It's like buying a stock share after its initial release. The company does not get the money, but the seller of it does.

Anyway-
I would recommend getting some awesome anti-virus protection. AVG is pretty good, and there is a free version too.
