What are you reading in December 2009?

I am working on some YA Fantasy:

finishing Fallen and Hush Hush - interesting to do these at the same time - both deal with Angels.

I picked up the new James Patterson Witch & Wizard (not expecting a lot from JP these days)

I just read Shiver and Chalice; have Fallen and Blue Moon on my TBR pile; asked for Hush, Hush for Christmas.

In other genres, just finished Where Men Win Glory The Odyssey of Pat Tillman and am reading The Weight of Heaven A Novel

Finished A Sorcerer's Treason (my review) yesterday. I'm starting (and hope to finish today) the first book in the Great Book of Amber - Nine Princes in Amber.

Just finishing up Tad Williams' "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" trilogy. It's my first time reading it and I'm loving it! I'm sad that I'm over halfway done with the last book though....

just finished Maelstrom (alternate history - not fantasy) and the latest Merry Gentry by LKH. I'm reading now The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - which is actually pretty darn good. Easy reading but it sure gives you a feel for England during WWII. That's about it for the rest of this month, though. Butcher (I hope) in January/February. I've read Turncoat - what's up next?

Crazy, wild, imaginative ride. Highly recommended.

Finished Nine Princes in Amber (my review) last night and started The Ships of Merior this morning.

Since I'm snowed in under a blizzard warning until 6pm tonight, I'll be reading all day long today.

Currently working through The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Warbreaker. Hoping to finish Warbreaker while I'm still on my little wanna-be vacation at my mom's place, but with how slow I've been reading, I dunno.

If I finish before Tuesday, I'm going to try to read all of either The Girl in the Green Sweater or Church of Lies, both of which feed into some of my other areas of interest, namely WWII and the holocaust and religious cults.

I just got Warbreaker through a free offer on Audible.com. I hope I can handle the audiobook format.

I ended up finishing the book in a little over 48 hours. I was completely hooked less than 5 pages in.

Am reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

Caity this maybe worth a look at by you, as it is set during WW2 in Germany and narrated by 'Death'. I wont say more.

This book has won many awards and is being made into a movie.

Augie - depends on what you like about Martin.

If the violent edges appeal, go for Matthew Woodring Stover's Heroes Die.

If you liked the depth of world and characters, with complex political scope, you might try The Lions of al-Rassanby Guy Gavriel Kay.

Another well developed duology with good characters, more of a magical shimmer, and complete unpredictability, try the Lighthouse duology by Carol Berg.

If your preference leaned toward the rot at the core of human nature, then Joe Abercrombie might work.

Could be the King Killer chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss may develop with as much complexity.

It's hard to duplicate Martin's voice and view - I do recommend his standalone work, The Armageddon Rag

A lot of people who enjoy Martin also rave over the Malazan Empire books by Steven Erikson. Prepare to push past the confusion in the opening volume, Gardens of the Moon.

Personally, I liked the opening volume of The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan as much as A Game of Thrones. Whatever is said about the rest of that series, the opening work stands very strong, and comes to a nice conclusion.

I'm currently reading The Girl in the Green Sweater, but I'm not sure I'll get to finish before I leave my mom's place to go back home on Wednesday (it's her book). When I get back I think I shall instead read To Ride Hell's Chasm.

Strongly agree! It's an amazing, perhaps one of the best non-fanasy I've ever read.

I just found and read Tanya Huff's newest book, The Enchantment Emporium. An excellent book, although the workings of her system of magic are more obscure than usual. But what the hell. It's Tanya Huff!
