Goodreads Authors/Readers discussion
Introduce Yourself!
Hello all. Zach here. I am 15 and have been much more involved with film than books until a few summers ago. I have been reading more, but also learning lots about how stories are stories are stories - film or books. Also, how books are made into films. The book that turned me on to reading is by Boston Teran, "Giv - the story of a Dog in America." I loved Old Yeller when I was younger. But didn't think I'd like a dog book at 14. Old Yeller is still my favorite movie and book from when I was a kid (just a few years ago.) Old Yeller made me cry and to be honest the part in GIV during Katrina and the part halfway in when Giv meets the soldier made me cry, but it was still the best dog book ever. It also made me ask a lot of questions about the Kennedy assassination. I get that whole time in the '60s better now.
The book is FREE on Amazon Kindle until the morning of July 12th.
Link to short film clip I worked on (camera & editing) It is inspired by an 'excerpt' from “Giv – the Story of a Dog and America” by Boston Teran. It was filmed at a No Kill shelter in Cocoa, FL. https://vimeo.com/3778319

Hello My name is Joyce Nance and I live in Albuquerque, NM. I just self-published the book "Escaping the Arroyo", and I'm trying to teach myself the ropes. It's very time consuming and I don't know where it will take me but so far the ride has been fun. I look forward to integrating myself in these groups. Be gentle.

After the first one, when you've gained some understanding of the process, it's not as much of a chore.
Hi y'all. I'm a newly self-published author. Didn't realize the amount of time and effort that would go into this when I started, but I'm still plugging away after one month and getting some great feedback on my first novel, Zombie/Apocalypse 2012: A Political Horror Story.
Thanks for the encouragement. Millie wrote: "Nice to meet you Ian! It is very time consuming, but oh so worth it!!!"

Talking not only generates ideas (especially true if you're an extrovert) but also makes you accountable as a writer. Self-inflicted pressure can be useful. :)
Hello everyone, I'm Cynthia Vespia..."The Original Cyn" Like most of the rest of you I'm a reader first and foremost. I used to read voraciously as a young girl, everything from Piers Anthony to C.S. Lewis and the old Choose Your Own Adventure books (remember those?) Those are still some of my favorite authors along with Koontz, King, Mary Higgins Clark, and so many more. I'm always on the look out for new voices in fantasy and thrillers.
Subsequently these are also the genres I write in. My trilogy Demon Hunter has received very favorable reviews and was nominated for Best Series in 2009.
The ideas for my novels come from random, everyday situations. When I get a spark for a juicy idea I like to jump right in with very little outline. I prefer being surprised by what happens just like my readers :)
I'm also a graphic designer and video editor. Some of my video productions have won awards. As an author I specialize in advertising for other authors (trailers, covers, promotional items, etc)
I've been traditionally published and self-published but basically I write because I enjoy it, always have, always will.

Hello everyone,I'm a long-time writer, but published only recently. I've been writing shorts, graphic novels, screenplays and television copy for many years, and finally decided to expand some of my stories out into novel form. My debut novel Yield will be released on August 14th in paperback and e-book formats.
Yield is a pre-dystopian journey from the normality of today into a very dark and savage world. If everything we knew suddenly changed in flashes of hatred and violence, how would mankind react? What would we be capable of to protect the ones we love?
Feel free to friend me or drop me a line. I look forward to "meeting" you all.

Hi Everyone,After a career as a children's magazine editor, I'm trying self-publishing. My first book has just been released and I've quickly realized that self-publishing also means self-promotion (sigh).
My first book is called London 2012 Olympics: The Kids' Only Guide and is an ebook for iPad only. I can't do a giveaway through GoodReads because (for now) they only do physical books. So I am running my own giveaway. I will send the first ten people who message me a code for a free download through iTunes.
You can see screen shots of the book, or download a sample at:

Hi Vincent, I'm not quite sure what I'm doing yet, but I just found your group and it looks interesting. :) I am a writer and a reader. My name is Philippa, or Pippa, Roberts. I have published stories and poems for children and adults, in magazines and anthologies. I've also done some journalism, under the name of Eleanor Theyer, and am now working on scripts and a children's novel. I'm also a voracious reader - books of all genres, including non-fiction (mainly science or history/philosophy).
Hi Everyone,My name is Caroline and I'm an author from 'down under' (Melbourne, Australia). After years of pounding the corporate treadmill, I made the giant scary leap into the great unknown of self-employment.
As an executive, career and lifestyle coach, author and speaker, I love helping people achieve what they previously thought impossible - the more outrageous the goal the better!
My book The Great Life Redesign - change how you work, live how you dream and make it happen today was published earlier this year and I'm keen to hear what fellow Goodread readers and authors think about it! Would also love to hear your experience of making a major life change - what you did and how it's working out?
All comments and feedback welcome and thank you, in anticipation!

A Turnkey or Not? An Autobiography. This is my first and probably only book ever to be published.
I am a 60 year old man who spent 25 years working in Her Majesty's Prison Service.
I wrote the book out of shear frustration as to who Prison Staff were always displayed both publicly and dramatically on both TV and newspapers. I wanted the public to see the real people and not those portrayed on TV or in newspapers.
I have always loved to read books and enjoyed most genre's. I am happily married with two step daughters and four fantastic grandchildren.
I love holidays in the sun, good wine, eating out, entertaining and my time with my wife.
Hello, My name is Deborah H. Bateman. I am a Christian Suthor and founder of Christian Daily Resources, a Christian Online Ministry. Hi, I'm Henry Hallan, a writer and smallholder living in the west of Ireland. The second volume of my Fall of the Sea People fantasy is with the editor right now. I'm hoping to be able to announce a publication date in the next few weeks.
I'm also giving away my short story,
Essence: a Short Story of Romance, Scientific Magic and Poisoning this Thursday, 12 July.
Very excited to be here. I write cozy mystery with paranormal elements. I'm a three time Amazon Mover and Shaker. My cozy, SPLITSVILLE.COM is a double finalist in The Next Generation Indie Book Awards 2012. My cozies are all humorous and quirky. I have an amazing STREET TEAM of readers and we have a lot of fun! Just out:MAN HUNT is the story of the Espinosas, members of a secret brotherhood, who rampage through Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico robbing and killing Gringos. Tom Tobin is an illiterate hunter, trader, rancher, Indian fighter and sometimes U. S. Army guide. Tobin leads a small detachment of soldiers to hunt the Espinosas, tracks them down, uses his Hawken 54 caliber rifle to kill them at long range then cuts off their heads. He returns to Fort Garland with the grisly trophies but refuses the large reward for killing them. Why were Gringos the only targets of the Espinosas? Why did Tobin agree to hunt his wife’s cousins? How did the doctrine of Manifest Destiny result in the Mexican-American War and the annexation of what is now New Mexico, Arizona, and much of Colorado and Utah? How did the Americans legally steal huge tracts of land from the New Mexicans? The era of the Mountain Man, the San Luis Valley and events leading to and following the Mexican-American War provide the backdrop for this story of revenge, redemption, repentance and brutality.

Hello Goodreads Authors/Readers,My name is A.M. Day. I am a former freelance journalist and the author of the upcoming, debut novel The Throne of Olympus Book One: Blood Bond. It is moder-day, urban-fantasy and paranormal romance with a big Greek mythology twist, or kink as I like to call it.
I have been attempting to write for...let's just say many years now. Finally, I dove in head first, putting the other voices in my head to rest and listening to my new voice. The voice that said, "There's no other way, you'll just have to do it." So, I refused to take any temp jobs or writing assignments, sold things, and found a small, inexpensive one bedroom house for my two daughters, our dog Simi and myself.
Eureka! Full-time, I wrote and wrote and re-wrote The Throne of Olympus series/along with other stuff. Check out a sneak peek of chapter one and excerpts from book one in the Goodreads Creative writing section under the urban-fantasy tag/top of pg. 2.
I look forward to reading what you guys write as well and sharing more of myself with you. I am honored to do so!
Awesone, nice to meet you AM. your novel does seem interesting! How was freelance writing? Back in the day I wanted to try it out but I really don't possess the writing skills to do so :S
Nic wrote: "Awesone, nice to meet you AM. your novel does seem interesting! How was freelance writing? I think I enjoyed the deadlines the most...got the adrenaline pumping. Big rush when you cover a feature and only have an hour to shoot it through to the editor's desk.
Haha Nathanael! :D Canada for me! Sadly we never do well in the summer olympics, winter is our time of the year where we win a lot!

Hi all. I love to read and write. I've read fairly widely across genres and appreciate good writing in a range of styles and forms. I have written my whole life but it has taken me a long time to get my first novel published. I'll put more info on that in the right spot, or you can check out my GR profile for more.
