Jak (blindjak) | 32 comments **contains spoilers do not read if you've not yet finished book 7**

So the door at the base of the Tower slams shut and sai King stop and offers the constant reader the chance to opt out there and then. The chance to imagine your own ending, or indeed leave matters there as they stood. Or the constant reader could open Pandora’s Box and risk an ending not to their taste.

After wading through several thousand pages I can’t imagine that even one reader did opt out. Can anyone prove my assumption wrong?

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I didn't. I couldn't. I had to know what Roland had come so long and far for, even if it was horrible. And in my opinion, the ending was perfect, so I'm glad that my curiosity was heeded.

I couldn't imagine following along for so long (and I was a new DT reader when all of the books were available, not one who'd been waiting 25+ years for the conclusion) and NOT sticking it out until the end.

No way.

Sarah | 72 comments I agree - how could you NOT want to know what SK had in store, be it good or bad?!?! There is no way I could have avoided reading the end. The ending was my favorite part.

***SPOILER*** I just loved Roland's circular existence. I remember reading and thinking: there is no other way this possibly could have ended. One of my favorite books is Slaughterhouse Five, and my favorite part is where they talk about how, this is what happens at that point in time; this is what always has happened at that point in time, this is what always will happen at that point in time. That's how it was for Roland. This is the perfect ending!!!
***SPOILER ABOVE***

But a very good point to make! I am curious to see if anyone ... well, you know... didn't do it.

Betsy Boo (betsyboo) | 195 comments Well...I'm with all of you. There was no way after waiting so long I was NOT going to finish it, and I'm sure SK knew that. The one thing that got to me at the end was the theme SK has of "hell being repetition". It was in "The Storm of the Century" and that short story in EE: "That Feeling. You Can Only Say What it is in French". I was torn between believing that someday Roland would get it right and there would be a happy ending for him (eternal peace) and believing it was his lot to experience the hell of this repetition. And as long as he continued, the world would be safe.

Jak (blindjak) | 32 comments I think that having the Horn of Eld ads hope that this time things will turn out different (for the best). But as it’ll come down to individual interpretation, being a “half full” or “half empty” kind of person is largely going to dictate your out look on that.

Sarah | 72 comments I agree with you Jak, when it ended, I definitely had the sense that, THIS time, everything's gonna be all right. Good topic!

I know three people who have read the DT series and we all read to the end. We just couldn't stop!

Jonathan | 6 comments I know of at least one person who recently told me they absolutely HATED the ending of book 7.. After talking with them for a bit I just had to ask "Did you read to the VERY end? Clear through?" They were completely confused until I mentioned the "chance to opt out" at the end..
"Oh, there's actually more?" :-o /foreheadsmack

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh my. That hurts my soul. O_o

Sarah | 72 comments Ouch. YOUR forehead should not have been the one that you smacked...

Lori (barfield) Well I did go the distance, and i guess my glass is half empty. I was so pissed off at SK. And he clearly states not to write him about the ending because he doesn't want to here it. He said he knew some people weren't going to like how it ends. To me i got the feeling that wasn't Roland's first rodeo with the Tower, but i felt it should have been his last. He's more then paid his debt, King should have released him. But at least this time he has the Horn of Eld with him.
