I've heard that a lot of people didn't really like this one, but I'm nearly halfway and really enjoying it so far.

I struggled through Blind Assassin as well. It took me three attempts before I finally finished it. It was my first MA book, I haven't pursued any of her other books.

Gail. Pretty sure you'd love MA's "Cat's Eye." Kind of like the movie "Mean Girls," only better writing.

Thanks Cynthia, I'll look for it. I haven't seen Mean Girls, not that that really matters.

I enjoyed Blind Assassin but hated Year of the Flood.

I'm currently reading Tana French's latest Broken Harbor.

I'm finding this one to be a chore. It's not even a very long book, it's just booo-ooring and pointless so far.
Has anyone else read it?"

I understand it was a freshman effort, and it shows many flaws of her inexperience.

I will probably read that at some point, as I've read the first three (but enjoyed them less with each new installment).

When I read Crime and Punishment I couldn't put it down. One of these days I'd like to read it again to see if it still has the same impact on me.

I picked up her first book "In The Woods" years ago and couldn't put it down. If you enjoy murder mysteries French will quickly become a favorite.

I thought that she was starting to lose a little steam with "Faithful Place" - it dragged a bit in some places for me. "Broken Harbor" is starting a tad slow but I think that is due to all the detail that she puts into her writing.

I took 3 years and read all the Russians. I'm totally complete on that subject - just like I'll never ever read another vampire book. My friends were real glad when my Russian jag was over because I was dour all the time. But I loved my time with the Russians!

message 2833: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) I just finished - My Name Is Asher Lev~Chaim Potok I gave it a 4/5 rating. It's a quiet read, but I found it engaging.

Current read- Churchill~Paul Johnson
It's a bit dry. However, it's only 200 pages. I read it because I just watched the DVD of The Gathering Storm. It was so good. Albert Finney plays Churchill. Vanessa Redgrave plays Clemmie, his wife. I plan on reading The Gathering Storm next month.

Which? Death of Satan? I've only read the introduction so far, but I'm getting a good vibe. The introduction was very good.

Yes, that one. I read the description after you posted it. Looks like something I would enjoy reading.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i have been in a book funk most of the year. started readying the game of thrones series on my ipad in early spring. epic reads. i downloaded a 4 book series from our local library knowing i would never finish them in the allotted time. somehow my ebooks stayed on my ipad past the load period which thrilled me so i was able to keep reading. this was a really busy year for me so i was not reading as much as i usually do. anywho...when my ipad got stolen in africa there went my books as these were not supposed to be still a valid loan i tried to get them back online the load had expired. since them i've tried a few reads and have floundered. yesterday i went to the library for the first time in months and walked right up to the new book shelves and instantly found two of my fav authors, john sandford and vince flynn. i was in book nerd heaven last night reading.

message 2842: by [deleted user] (new)

I LOVED THG, Fiona. Don't you find it hard to choose after a really good read, like you don't want it to be a let down?

Cheri | 795 comments My 17 year old grandaughter & I are reading A Teeny Bit of Trouble so we will have something to talk about that is not emotionaly charged.

Then I am reading at the same time as my FIL The Great War And The Shaping Of The 20th Century so we can have a conversation that doesn't have anything to do with family personalities.

You gotta just keep them talking and maybe something will pop out.

I can't do book reads with anyone in my family. Only because it takes them 6 months to finish a book. I suppose I could do a "side read" with them. Reading, like, two pages a day.
