Your next/current read?
Ha! I had no idea that book was the 1st three books in the Dresden Files series! I've had those on my list in my Moleskine for probably 4 years. I think Charissa told me to read them, so imagine how long ago that was! As it turns out, I've had the first 9 books in the series on my shelf for ages in the form of 4 books by totally different titles. How was one to know?
I like it okay so far, a little "gum shoe-y" for my tastes.

I'm enjoying it so far, Carol. The narrator of this audiobook is fantastic, using difference accents and voices for each character. The narrator for Map of Bones was monotonous. zzzzzzz

Anansi Boys was great. A little bit "Pratchetty" in parts though.
Janine - that bear story is hilarious!
I just finished "Nightwoods" by Charles Frazier.. Not a great plot, no earth-shattering revelations.. but still a good book. I suppose he could write about a trip to the grocery story and I would like it.Next book: Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
Listening to Hitch-22 by Christopher Hitchens. Long long long audiobook. And I am missing bits here and there since Mr. Hitchens is occasionally a mumbler.

I loooooovvvveee Alice Hoffman. She's in my top 10 favorite writers. I'm hoping to read The Dovekeepers soon.
Reading Black Swan Green by David Mitchell.Favourite quote so far:
'Just as well for sheep they can't work out why the farmer's being so nice to them. Human beings need to watch out for reasonless niceness too. It's never reasonless and it's reason's not usually nice.
Charly wrote: "Emily,I have had that book in my hands about five times in the last year in the library and moved to something else. would like to hear what you have to say when you finish."
My husband read it first and really enjoyed it. He's been bugging me to read it for months! I'm liking it so far, though I was a bit slow to get right into it. Very evocative descriptions of scenes all through the voice of a young boy. You can just hear him speaking and breath in the air.
I'll let you know what I think by the end :)
Finished Letter From the Good Squad. What category would you put that in? Modern Fiction? Modern Pap? Really, I could not see what all the fuss was about.
Cynthia wrote: "Finished Letter From the Good Squad. What category would you put that in? Modern Fiction? Modern Pap? Really, I could not see what all the fuss was about."I think it usually goes in contemporary fiction or literary fiction or just plain old fiction. I liked it, but to each her own :)

Hmm, I'm reading/listening to 9 different books rigth now, maybe I need to shape up and finish something...

Crap. I didn't realize Anansi Boys was a sequel. I need to get American Gods so I can read them in order. I can't stand reading out of sequence, or missing a volume, even in a barely-related series.
Sarah Pi wrote: "I'd call them barely-related, if I remember correctly. Same world."I'm weird that way. I'm reading Needful Things, which is the last of several books Stephen King set in Castle Rock, Maine. He has referenced a couple of the others that he set in that same town once or twice (nothing important really), but now I feel compelled to go back and re-read them so I know what the little allusions refer to.
I like to get the order right as well, except for Dick Francis books. The only exception I've ever made knowingly is the Miles Vorkosigan books, where BunWat told me to start with The Warrior's Apprentice, and then go back and read the beginning volumes as a prequel. I haven't gotten to the first book yet, but it seems to have worked fine.My mother recently gave me one of the Laurie King books about Holmes and Mary Russell and said it was wonderful and I should read it right away. It wasn't until I started that I realized it's the tenth book in the series.
Sarah Pi wrote: " The only exception I've ever made knowingly is the Miles Vorkosigan books, where BunWat told me to start with The Warrior's Apprentice, and then go back and read the beginning volumes as a prequel."I searched Goodreads for that author and didn't see that book. I searched for the book and had the same lack of results.
What do I need to look at to find reviews of "The Warrior's Apprentice?"
Sorry, Phil. The author is Lois McMaster Bujold. The main character is Miles Vorkosigan. The Warrior's Apprentice
Sarah Pi wrote: "I'd call them barely-related, if I remember correctly. Same world."The second book is about the sons of one of the characters in the first book. Reading the first book just gives you perspective of the world of the gods.
One of the reasons that I'm enjoying Anansi Boys more is because the narrator (Lenny Henry) is incredible! Each character has a distinctive voice. The crow woman's voice sounds just like a crow.
Sarah Pi wrote: "I like to get the order right as well, except for Dick Francis books. The only exception I've ever made knowingly is the Miles Vorkosigan books, where BunWat told me to start with The Warrior's App..."You know you can't go wrong with a name like Mary Russell!
Our Russells were Oregon pioneers -- perhaps a rogue branch of your family? I never realized how many Mary Russells there are in the U.S.
Anne of Green Gables
The Weird Sisters
The Weird Sisters is due back to the library as it was a rapid read and I got distracted. I may have to recheck it later as someone else wants it now.

I just finished Anansi Boys and Tomato Rhapsody: A Novel of Love, Lust, and Forbidden Fruit. I've started The Skystone and will start Their Eyes Were Watching God tomorrow.

Excellent! On my to read list :) Love The Princess Bride so any reference to that style has my ears perked up, plus I love food and all things food-centric.
Thanks for sharing, it's probably not one I would have stumbled across in my regular searching. Looking forward to checking it out!

I came across a cool anecdote: Ceaușescu wants to kill bears and takes one of his helicopters to the Transylvanian woods. Here he takes a nap while his helpers lay out a dead animal to attract bears. His helpers start to panic when no bears show up and start looking for bears. In a nearby village they see a circus with a trained bear. They force the bear to come with them and wake up Ceaușescu. But before he can shoot the bear it steals a bicycle and rides off into the woods.
