Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Peony in Love
Cathedral of the Sea
Moloka'i

Are just a few of my favorites.

Janice (jamasc) Just started A Prayer for Owen Meany in audiobook format. I read it a long time back and don't remember a thing.

I am listening to the audio of Swann's Way. It is great before bed reading/listening. It helps me drift off to sleep.

Great book, Charly. Just finished it last week.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments Janine, I've been reading a series of mysteries set in the time of Edward IV just after the murder of Henry VI. The period and it's politics are quite interesting.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I just finished Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void, which was surprisingly gross for a nonfiction book about astronauts, but funny, as is typical for Mary Roach.

And now I'm starting Graceling, which I should have read a couple of years ago, but never quite got around to.

I don't seem to have the motivation to write reviews anymore. I'm a few behind. :)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments I'm ravenously working my way through every Doctor Who novel I can get my grubby hands on, but I'm also very slowly making my way through David Copperfield. I want to have something on the back-burner that isn't so embarrassing to tell other people.

Gotcha. No, it's not SF, nor is it escapist.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Jim! Thanks!
My computing at home has been limited lately. Broken laptop, boo! I'll be around more once the replacement gets here.
Any time now... :)

Try Kafka on the Shore

Phil | 11837 comments Already did. That's why I bought this one and the Hardboiled one.

message 1175: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I just started Who Fears Death because I have to get it back to the library soon. Then come The Half-Made World and Bossypants and then I can actually start back on books I own instead of trying to keep up with my library holds.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I finished Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void, and have decided space travel is not for me. I prefer to be able to eat regular food, and to be able to shower daily. Astronauts need to have a high tolerance for unhygienic conditions and food in little, not very tasty cubes.

Then I devoured Cloaked in a few hours, it was a decent mash-up of fractured fairytales by the author of Beastly, but set in Florida. There were references to Ernest Hemingway and Jimmy Buffett. I'm not sure if I ever want to visit Key West, or not. Probably. :)

Phil | 11837 comments Charly wrote: "I am reading Anita Shreve's Pilot's Wife"

I read that a few years ago. If I had ever listed it here, it would have been with either two (most likely) or three stars. I liked the style of many of the passages, and I always enjoy stories that have some self discovery. What turned me off was the twist at the end (you'll see) that seemed rushed & forced.

I love just spending time on sights like this or on bookstore sights and putting in books that I have already read and they usually come up with 'customers who liked this also like...' I make a huge list than go to the used bookstore to see what I can find. It's hit or miss but most of the time I at least come out with something good and I have found some of my favorite books that way. It's a lot less daunting than going into the bookstpre blind... but that can be fun too : )

Janice (jamasc) I finally finished The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. Sarah Pi, for the most part the dogs fared ok which is more than what I can say about the humans. It is Hamlet rewritten after all.

I also finished The Birth of Venus Going on a road trip and visiting the mother-in-law gives lots of time for reading.

I started The Woman in White for the trip home.

I would recommend a re-read of the Arthurian Saga The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, The Wicked Day
