AuroraBlaze | 55 comments I think this is a fairly old book. The copy I read was hardcover and I think the cover was a bunch of people flying around a mountain.
*SPOILERS*
Kids are telekinetics but when they grow up, they lose the powers. There's a number of different plots going on throughout the book. One is a girl who is worried about being left behind, so she starts learning to read before she loses her powers. The kids aren't taught to read because when the first generation appeared with the powers, it caused chaos. So now they live in dormitories and get to do practically whatever they want as long as it's not dangerous and they do their work quota, mostly easy stuff like spinning motors to create energy or something like that. She coerces an older friend who already lost his power and thus was taught to read, to teach her.
Another plot is, policemen have a child to aid them because flying is very useful, as are other things. So one boy helps out. I don't remember much about this plotline, but they eventually meet up with the girl.
Another plot is, a scientist is trying to make it so the children don't lose their powers. I think he was experimenting on his own son.
Another plot is, a man, I think he was called a prophet or something, has convinced a lot of children to work for him. I think they were mining a mountain or something. He lied to them, I forget the reason he gave though. He finds out that the girl can read and tries to convince her to join him.
He is trying to find the scientist and his son, I forget if he wanted to destroy the experiment or if he wanted to be in charge of it.
But everything comes together and the man captures the scientist, the son, the policeman, and the girl. I think the boy got away. They're tied up. I think the man took the scientist, leaving the rest. If she tries to untie them, it's connected to a bomb and they all die. But the son is unconscious on the couch, and the scientist gave them a hint as to a specific word that will wake him up, and the girl figures out that it's behind a painting, or has something to do with a painting. So they get free.
And that's all I remember about it.
