Sorry I'm late to the party, but since Elvis and Joe, along with Myron and his friends, are among my very favorites, may I suggest one of the FIRST dynamic duos - Spencer and Hawk! If you haven't read any Robert B Parker you're in for a treat. IMO, Spencer is much better (and funnier) than Jessie Stone, but the Sunny Randall books are good too.

I had high hopes for the black book which i've just finished today, it started really well but I though overall was extremely poor.

It was one of those books where he stumbles on to something by accident/fluke near the end that helps him solve the case i.e. little investigative work!

Looks like you have quite a good list of recommendations already! Some of my faves are Shane Scully books by Stephen J. Cannell, Stone Barrington books by Stewart Woods and his Orchard series with protaganist Holly Barker. These are fairly light reads but fun. Of course there's always the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. These books are what I concider "between the novel" books. Light, fun and the help cleanse the palate for a more substancial, meatier mystery. I'm not knocking any of these authors down. I truely enjoy their writing style. I listed them from heavy to light. Another is Agent A. Pendergast in the Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child novels. A good, sink-your-teeth-in, fast-paced series. Start with The Relic. The movie was a disaster but the book was intense! Happy reading to you.

If you want to try something a little darker (with some humor sprinkled in), I would strongly recommend Charlie Parker in John Connolly's series of books. One of the most multi-dimensional characters I have read.

Okay, new here but I would suggest Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child books which feature Special Agent Pendergast...which I see is just noted above.

There's also James Rollins and the Sigma Force series featuring Gray Pierce!

You might like the Karin Slaughter series. The main character is Sara Linton, the forensic pathologist in a small town in Georgia. They remind me somewhat of the Patricia Cornwell and Kathy Reichs books. Gritty, tense, excellent mysteries.

This is a great thread, as i'm also always looking for a new series to get into. One that hasn't been mentioned in the thread at all is the Gabriel Allon series by Daniel Silva. Those are great books with alot of action,suspense ass kicking and some smaller doses of humor mixed in. Start with the Kill Artist.

Pretty much all of the books I have read or reading, have a good character to follow. The list is long, so you could check out my book list, it would be easier.
