Nicki - what about
The Book of Air and Shadows which is about book maker for 686. This was a pretty good read.

Kim | 119 comments I have 360 Social services and other specialised servies and 610 Medical science/medicine.

Can I read a book where a social worker features- or would it have to be predominantly about the social worker? Anyone got any suggestions for me.
For the medicine part- would a book about a doctor be ok?

message 103: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) | 222 comments I don't know why, but I'm having a hard time with this one! My head is telling me this should be easy but no ideas are forthcoming lol ...

My choices are:

302 - social interaction
303 - social processes
304 - factors affecting social behaviour
305 - social groups
306 - culture and instituations

552 - petrology?!?!?
553 - economic geology
554 - earth sciences - Europe
555 - earth sciences - Asia
556 - earth sciences - Africa

OR I could go with these:

567 - fossils - cold-blooded vertebrates
568 - fossil birds
569 - fossil mammalia
570 - life sciences
571 - physiology

817 - satire and humour
818 - miscellaneous writings
819 - no longer used
820 - English poetry (not really my cup of tea)
821 - English drama

Any suggestions? I wouldn't normally ask for suggestions for such a broad task, but I am struggling! I'm thinking the 800s are going to be easier ... but open to all ideas!

Nicki (luluminstrel) | 279 comments Thanks so much for all the suggestions :) LOL at Fancy Coffins!!

I thought I had worked it out that I had to use 684 to get to my second choice, which was the only decent selection at the limit of the +2 thing, but I actually think I can stretch -2 backwards now for a couple of your suggestions. I need to go and do some more maths! I'm so confused!

message 106: by Cindy AL (new)

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Armed with my list of numbers I went to a local library (the first one used Library of Congress), and just walked around the shelves looking up those numbers. I ended up with a philosophy book.
There are books that are like companion books to History Channel or PBS type series that are catalogued in what I thought were odd places,. some under my numbers. All sorts of "learning lite" non-fiction books that would make interesting reading. Physically looking on the shelves with my list of numbers made this much easier.
I did, though, go through about 10 of my five star books to find my final choices. The problem was that only one of the two numbers would give me good possibilities. Still this was much easier than I thought it would be.

Fiction books featuring a social worker and a doctor are fine. Non-fiction needs to fit the assigned DDC number. 1 DEC Either fiction or NF

Petra PJReads, I'm just confirming that these choices work. Please let me know if they don't.

One of my top rated books was The Screwtape Letters at 175 pages. So my choices for your task would be:

message 113: by Felina (new)

Felina | 0 comments Okay let me know if I have done this correctly.

My 5 star read is The Book of Lost Things which is 480 pages.

480 (plus or minus 2) I'll use 500 which is science and choose a book I own about planets (non-fiction) of which I can't remember the name.

Then 480-250 = 240. 240 (plus or minus 2) I'll use 230 which is Christianity & Christian Theology and choose The Pilgrim's Progress.

480 (+/-2) = the Dewey Decimal Categories:
478 Classical Latin usage
479 Other Italic languages
480 Hellenic languages; classical Greek
481 Classical Greek writing & phonology
482 Classical Greek etymology

I don't think the planets book works for that.

PJReads if the final say on the question, but that's how I've interpreted the rules for this task.

I think the second catagory is + or - 250 from Catagory 1. For example, if you used Catagory 480 for your first book, you would use either Catagory 230 or 730 for the second book. But if you plan on using Catagory 500 (??), you'd use either catagory 250 or 750.

I'm waiting to hear from PJReads to see if I got it right, too.

The second category is 250 +/-2 from either the page count you started with OR the DDC number you picked for the first book.

pjreads, is this okay-
One of my favorite books for the Fall Challenge was King Lear (384 pgs +/-2), so for 385. Railroad transportation I want to read Orient Express and for 133 (384-150 +/-2) Parapsychology and Occultism, Carrie?

Yes to both books ... and I love King Lear.

Felina | 0 comments Okay here's my second shot.

I am using Misery - 351 pages

348 is Law, Regulations, Cases - A Time to Kill

-250 is 101
I'm thinking 100 Philosophy & Psychology - Everything I Needed to Know about Being a Girl I Learned from Judy Blume (Okay at first glance I know this doesn't look like philosophy but its a series of stories written by woman who talk about their life's journeys. I think that qualifies. PJReads, does that qualify?)
OR 098 Prohibited Works for which I will read Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret

Either way I wants me some Blume

Yes for both

348 is 351-3, but the 349-353 range is Law and A Time to Kill is fiction -- so it's okay.

I'll accept Judy Blume as an expert on both Philosophy and Psychology -- enjoy!

Juniper (jooniperd) Nicki wrote: "Help!"

Hi Nicki. There is this really cool book called: Shop Class as Soulcraft An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew B. Crawford. It is nonfiction and I think it would totally fit. Here's a bit of a description:
"Philosopher and motorcycle repair-shop owner Crawford extols the value of making and fixing things in this masterful paean to what he calls manual competence, the ability to work with one's hands. According to the author, our alienation from how our possessions are made and how they work takes many forms: the decline of shop class, the design of goods whose workings cannot be accessed by users (such as recent Mercedes models built without oil dipsticks) and the general disdain with which we regard the trades in our emerging information economy. Unlike todays knowledge worker, whose work is often so abstract that standards of excellence cannot exist in many fields (consider corporate executives awarded bonuses as their companies sink into bankruptcy), the person who works with his or her hands submits to standards inherent in the work itself: the lights either turn on or they don't, the toilet flushes or it doesn't, the motorcycle roars or sputters. With wit and humour, the author deftly mixes the details of his own experience as a tradesman and then proprietor of a motorcycle repair shop with more philosophical considerations."

As far a blacksmithing options, maybe The Blacksmith's Daughter or The Blacksmith. I haven't read either so can't endorse them for you. As for nonfiction blacksmithing books, my husband actually does artistic blacksmithing and he says all of the nonfiction books are pretty dry and are generally instructional/how-to's for making your own forge and tools, etc. For someone not deeply interested in the craft, it might be a slog. Just his 2 cents worth.

Oohhh! Check Great Expectations by Charles Dickens ~ "It recounts the development of the character of the narrator, Philip Pirrip, commonly known as ‘Pip’, a village boy brought up by his termagant sister, the wife of the gentle, humorous, kindly blacksmith Joe Gargery. (Spoilers removed, in case you haven't read it.)

Kay (neenamara) | 71 comments I love this task! I'm still not sure I'm doing it right, though...Does this work?

If we can use any 5* read on our goodreads list, I would like to use Death The Time of Your Life which is 96 pages.

096 is Rare Books/Books notable for illustrations. Then going back 250 places (+/- 2) could put me at 843: French Fiction.

So, if this is right, could I read any fiction book notable for its illustrations (100+ pages) and a work of French fiction? If so, would a graphic novel work for the first half?

I'll look for some specific books tomorrow. For now ...

868 fiction translated from Spanish
869 fiction translated from Portuguese
870-872 Are you interested in anything originally written in Latin?

618 fiction about pregnancy, motherhood, girl coming-of-age*, illness in old age

*Carrie by Stephen King
and Suzette Haden Elgin's trilogy
Native Tongue
Earthsong
The Judas Rose Native Tongue II
are fiction with girls coming-of-age physically as well as emotionally.

121 Epistemology is the study of knowledge and knowing and one of the books listed in the NYC Public Library catalogue is other minds. You can stretch this to fiction with ESP and wizards.

122 Causation -- also can be stretched to fiction with magic.

123 Determinism & indeterminism includes luck and free will. Lots of possibilities for fiction where luck or choice plays a role.

Let me know if any of these ideas are appealing and other genres you like that you haven't entered in your GR lists yet.

Note: A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin would fit especially well.

One way to approach 872 Latin dramatic poetry & drama is to read Shakespeare who was influenced by Ovid, Plautus, Seneca and Plutarch.
Ovid - Midsummer Night’s Dream
Plautus – A Comedy of Errors
Seneca influenced the tragedies, especially Hamlet and Macbeth
Plutarch – Coriolanus, Julius Caesar, Antony & Cleopatra

868 Spanish miscellaneous writings
Like Water for Chocolate A Novel in Monthly Installments with Recipes, Romances, and Home Remedies
The Witch of Portobello
In the Time of the Butterflies
many books by Isabel Allende

869 Portuguese literature
Epitaph of a Small Winner
Near to the Wild Heart

Juniper (jooniperd) Hi Tanja.

That section was one of my options too...some things I came up with would be (for 306) a book that involves a museum, art gallery or other 'cultural' event or institution. I would think a book like The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time would work for 302 or, probably more specifically 304. For 305 you could do any book that involves a club, like The Jane Austen Book Club or The Friday Night Knitting Club. I haven't looked at your books, so not sure of your tastes, but with hope this gives you some examples to get you going.

:)

Good news: Yes for 335 The Grapes of Wrath

Bad news: Back 250 from 336 is 86 not 136 so the choices are (+/-2 for 335 or 336):
083 Collections in other Germanic languages
084 Collections in French, Occitan & Catalan
085 In Italian, Romanian & related languages
086 Collections in Spanish & Portuguese
087 Collections in Slavic languages
088 Collections in Scandinavian languages

or forward 250 from 335 / 336

583 Dicotyledones
