SOLVED. YA novel, a misfit boy is sent to live with a crazy family on their farm, father of family is a playwrit/producer and they put on the sound of music... something about apples? [s]

I read this book a while ago, maybe in 2009-11. The main charactor is a boy with piercings and he is sent to live with a big crazy family on their farm where they have a cook who makes really spicy food (in one part a visitor- mabey a foster care service person?- eats it and they mention something about koolaide helping with the hotness) and a play write/producer dad who puts on The Sound of Music. The boy gets cast as Rolf (i think) after they discover he has a hidden talent for singing or something. Durring the opening night it is raining outside but the actors have to walk outside and around the barn/theater house to get back inside so they decide to use umbrellas and shuttle them back and forth. the play went really well (?). I loved this book when i was younger and its killing me that i cant remember what its called. the cover (that i had at least) was either light blue or green and there was something important about apples, like mabey the families name had the word apple in it? i also think one of the daughters of the playwrite was the enemy/love interest of the boy.
