Read this in the school library a few years ago and loved it, but I can’t remember the title. I recently wanted to read again and couldn’t find it.

Also, the hamster is named Russel. Forgot to mention that.
The Twistrose Key by Tone Almhjell? The pet is a vole called Rufus rather than a hamster called Russell but it's very close!
