YA Thriller Fantasy - 3 book series (I think) Follows a boy whose mother, in death, left him a magical orb. He figures out this orb allows him to see ghosts and he goes on an expedition to solve his mother's death mystery. Spoilers ahead.

I read this book about 3 years ago (2022-2023), and haven't seen it since. I remember seeing it had been released around 2015. My memories are also very vague of what my mind movie looked like. The FIRST book's cover was red and the font of the title was gothic-like. (one word title) I remember the sequel being blue with a picture of a cemetery's fountain or headstone with fog.

The main character's mom leaves him this magical orb which he uses through his expedition. I remember the beginning starting with something like: He was eating breakfast when something related to the sink happens. I think the water starts dripping and he tuns it off without a thought. Then knocking noises, then things started flying around the room. (I could very well be mixing media up though) I remember the main character unwillingly shows up to this train station and met someone that was one of his mom's friends. It was a dream like realm thought, He also worked at a surf shop or something in the summer, where he met this girl he liked. I don't remember where their relationship went. I also remember that his mom died to the collapse of a building (maybe in Rome?) His mom liked to travel. This is very, very vague and I'm not sure if it's true, but I remember him figuring out his mom secretly ghost-hunted. But they weren't ghosts or demons, it was some sort of afterlife beings I'm pretty sure.
