SciFi fantasy leaning book I think I read it in the late 90s or early 2000s

Hi all (it'd help to make it waaaaaaaaaaaay more obvious how to post to this forum...:looking at you small font (10points) a little slow, and the web designer that didn't put POST TO: what's the name of that book right smack dab top)
Now then: I am looking for a book that was I think from the early 2ks, Or at least thats when I I read it. I checked it out from the library.
Kind of a scifi retro futuristic thing going on with I possibly shades of fantasy: specifically it said something about dwarfs and elves.
However! One of the Big Things was travel. People (generally) used a reeeelly cool door ting that'd teleport them to...doorway IIRC. For a quite a bit of magic and energy they could pick other places. Something about a kid made friends with a Gremlin. And would teleport to park and I think once or twice a super rad sounding house, and tried to into a burger and pizza place (clearly hungery) and there was a lot humor around how he just wanted a big ol' burger and fries, milk shake very summer and very funny. He couldn't get in because of the entertainment wasn't kid friendly. Something about dancing girls and loud and "appropriately loud, and rambunctious, exuberant, and lots of drunken revelry with lots of words that made (name I can't recall) turn red" before being kicked out.
I only got a few chapters in before needing to return it.
But oh man, if one of ya'all can help me find the tittle, that'd be so awesome!
