Maureen Ballatori | 1 comments Plot: Two scientists (possibly mother and son, but definitely very close) accidentally create and deploy a vaccine that kills mosquitoes (or similar insects). This unintentionally causes a collapse of the global food system/ecosystem.

Key scenes I remember:
• The two scientists end up chasing each other around the world for years
• The book culminates in a big shootout scene at a cabin in the woods
• Standalone novel, not part of a series
• Definitely post-apocalyptic in tone

Additional details:
• Read it sometime in the last 5 years (so published recently or I discovered it recently)
• Not sure if the scientists were actually mother/son - they could have been mentor/student, colleagues, or another close relationship
• The ecological disaster was specifically caused by killing insects, which then disrupted the food chain

NOT these books: Station Eleven, Sea of Tranquility, anything by Blake Crouch, Ender’s Game, The Windup Girl, System Collapse (Murderbot), or The Dry.

The plot was very distinctive with that specific chain of vaccine → dead insects → food system collapse → years-long pursuit → cabin finale.

Thanks for any help!
