Wordless Picture Book about a little boy and his stuffed lion, read in early 1960s

My friend in his early 60s read this book in the early 1960s. It was a picture book with no words, just illustrations, about a little boy and his stuffed lion.

My first thought was Ellen's Lion.

The main character is a girl, but could be mistaken for a boy. However, it's definitely not wordless. Is your friend sure his book didn't contain any text?
