Ah! That's why the narrator sounds familiar! Reading this today. It's the Shopocalypse narrator.

Through Chapter 8. Fun so far, though there's a bit of uncomfortable... kinda want to call it sexism--but it goes both ways, so fair's fair. Not sure if "sexism" is the right word, but (view spoiler)[like Johnny being a chick magnet, and Lisa describing him as having cookie-dough aura, but also Lisa being a dude-magnet, and handling herself... Still a bit dated gender roles.

But they have good partner chemistry so far. I wouldn't be on board with a romantic relationship at this point though. Johnny's too machismo. The dogs are no Oberon, but walk the same line between comic relief and annoying. Right now I'm coming down on comic.

The case is also attention-catching. Nothing more engaging than a kidnapped child... (hide spoiler)]

Finished! A lot like Shopocalypse in feel--not top tier, but still fun, some good tropes. I also like Lisa more than naga-lady in Shopocalypse, though the dog in that saga wins over these two so far. (view spoiler)[I'm especially glad that the kid is sticking around... I love me a good grumpy-mentor and little kid pairing. I also like that the first book is tying into a bigger story--the mystery of his own daughter's death. I wonder how long that will continue for, though. (hide spoiler)]

As soon as I realized this was cowritten with Michael Anderle, I immediately lowered my expectations...

Me and Choko read one of his series before, the first series he wrote before growing a big fanbase and started to cowrite tons of spinoffs and side series and unrelated series with people... he's one of those authors that releases a book monthly through his own indie publishing platform...

Me and Choko read Death Becomes Her & the 18 book Kurtherian Gambit series, but none of the hundreds of other books in the expanded universe of books or the sequel series Kurtherian Endgame... the megaseries churned out 250+ books in under a decade...

I finished and I liked it! It was predictable and I agree with Nirkatze about the gender stereotypes but it wasn't bad enough to bug me especially when it was pointed out how much shorter he was than her lol (view spoiler)[Definitely knew the kid was going to stay with him from the initial scene they met on the bridge, it just made sense that's how it would end up. I agree with the Shopapocolypse feels but I think I liked this a bit better than the beginning of that series and I most definitely like Lisa >>>>>>>>>>>>> that dumb naga whose name I blocked out of my brain lol (hide spoiler)]

I enjoyed it well enough, but didn't overthink it or even pay the closest attention at times...

The NYC aspects made me think of Ghosts of Gotham or Carrion City...

The backwoods hermit aspects made me think of Highfire...

And obviously the talking dogs made me think of Iron Druid...

I can definitely feel the connections to Highfire--less the city connections...
