I specifically remember the edition as it was not a mass market paperback like many of my other books.

I also vividly recall a scene where the party is being attacked by the dark lord's storm on a bridge and the wizard is holding back the lightning and hail with a magic shield that begins to crack.
I remember the enemy minions as orc-like but not straight up orcs.
I have looked at many books online trying to recall it and as far as I can tell it was not written by any of the 'big name' fantasy writers of the 80s, 90s, or 00s.
