The book starts with adults having to go thoigh the portal, the belive if every (year?) They dont tragedy will strike them. The MCs parent (i think dad but not sure) is in this group. Shes pissed. And male MCs Uncle is in this group, male MC is more resigned. Going through this portal is a death sentence. While people are suposed to be able to return noone ever has.
Female MC has some aort of vision where the hroup through the portal are alive and fighting bit need help. She tries to get help from like elders and they tell her no. During this, male MC is out with grandma(?) gathering food. I cant remeber if they have a good gathering spot or are stealing from the king but they do get caught by guards. The male MC says something about the grandma having magic words. As they perpare to kill her the male mc kills one of the guards. And the other 2 detain him. Grandma gets a vision where they kill the boy then her.
The guards to kill the boy, but using a purple bottle that was forbidden magic (i think from his parents) he comes back to life by crushing it. It comes at a cost. From having no magic he now has all magic(?) Or just choas magic, (smthin). He traps them in visions while grandma kills them. They gather hide the bodies and grab up the gathered food again and go back to the village.
Female MC tella male MC about her vision and hes dont wanna follow at first. He doesn't want to leave grandma. Eventually after gathering some more kids he joins the group at grandmas persistence.
To get to the portal itself they have to go though a bunch of animals that protect it year round unless it time to sacrifice. (I think im rembering a bor or some kind of pig. Its big, mean and pissed and Male MC) One kid gets hurt in the leg i cant rember how, but they all make it through. The book ends up with them at the wonky world.
