A nice series which you might like, that you can take in small bites, just one at a time is The Lady Hardcastle series. The first is A Quiet Life in the Country

I have the same problem and with Susanna Gregory's Matthew Bartholomew series, I not only had to have them, I had to read them one after another like potato chips. The first one is A Plague on Both Your Houses. Hopefully I don't find another like that this year, it puts a damper on all my other reading.

Well, no, possibly not.
But, who else would Major Ramsey call when a body turns up in the Thames with an unusual locked bracelet on her wrist? Elli McDonnel is in the thick of things again. London is sandbagged in preparation for the inevitable bombing and in addition to the waterlogged body, someone is taking lots of pictures of strategic locations.
This book had its share of danger and suspense, but there was also a good helping or wry humor. Major Ramsey is beginning to fully appreciate Electra’s abilities.
”He nodded, his expression thawing ever so slightly. “It seems that our partnership has been more successful than I thought it might be from the start. I wouldn’t have known where to get someone who could blow a vault at such short notice.”
