What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?

The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.

The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.

You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!

After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.

In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations. PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)

Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!

Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.

You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.

INFORMATION NEEDED TO SIGN UP
Please sign up in this thread with the answer to the following question:

✱✱ Is there a female historical figure that you particularly admire? AND/OR Who is your favorite romance heroine? ✱✱

✱✱ If you have a preferred shelf, please list it along with your pick! ✱✱

IMPORTANT DATES
Sign ups will remain open until February 23, 1 pm US EST
For your convenience a Time Zone Converter: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock....

You’ll have until February 28, 2 am US EST to make your recommendations. (weird time I know...blame it on my work schedule!)

Please do not start reading your book(s) until the first of the month. You then have the entire month to read your pick(s) and give some feedback.

If you’re new please read the PIFM Guidelines and FAQ. If you have any questions that are not addressed there, please feel free to ask!

Please note that late sign ups will be included at the host's discretion and no one will be included after re-picks are assigned!✱

~KarenH~ | 11321 comments TIPS TO MAKE THE CHALLENGE ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE!

Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.

Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.

✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.

Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.

A few hints to help with book selection:
Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.

If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✱ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

~KarenH~ | 11321 comments 2025 March – Pairings

Please pick for the person beneath you. The last person picks for the first person, so Trip picks for Carrie.

✔ = Picks made

Carrie - mgp
MountainKat - to-read-asap
Carina - clr-rom
Heather - tbr-owned
LaurLa - 01-pick-me-please
〰️Beth〰️ - 1-romance-tbr
Nancy H
Paula
Rosalinde
Anastacia

Nathalie
~KarenH~ - cant-wait-to-read
☘KathyD☘ - tbr-audios
Sonja - pifm
Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress - 2025-picks

Remember to pick a minimum of four NEW books and four from your pickee's TBR or preferred shelf. Please limit your picks to no more than two new to your pickee and two from their preferred shelf (or TBR) for each rule, since sometimes too many choices can be as bad as too few!

~KarenH~ | 11321 comments 2025 March – Picking Rules

March is Women's History Month, so I thought it would be a great time to celebrate some of these wonderful real-life heroines from our past. And if someone you especially admire is left off the list, don't feel bad - it took me FOREVER to narrow it down to just eight!

Jane Austen (1775 - 1817) - Jane Austen was an English novelist known for her six novels that critique and comment on the English landed gentry in the late 18th century. Her works are celebrated for their social commentary, particularly on class, status, and gender barriers. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for economic security and social standing. Her writing is known for its realism, use of irony and burlesque, and masterful use of free indirect discourse.
📒 Recommend a book with a character who is somehow involved in the creative arts (artist, writer, composer, etc.) or a book that is tagged 'Historical', or with a 6 in the page count or publication date.

Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910) - Florence Nightingale was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organised care for wounded soldiers at Constantinople.
🩺 Recommend a book with a character who is in the medical profession or a first responder, or a book with blue on the cover

Marie Curie (1867 - 1934) - Maria Salomea Skłodowska-Curie was a Polish-born physicist and chemist who revolutionized the scientific understanding of radioactivity. Her work led to new cancer treatments and the discovery of radium and polonium. Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, receiving the award in 1903 for radiation research. In 1911, she won a second Nobel Prize in chemistry for isolating radium.
☢️ Recommend a book with a character involved in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) profession or field of study, or with a 2 in the page count or publication date.

Amelia Earhart (1897 - presumed dead 1937) - Amelia Mary Earhart was an American aviation pioneer and advocate for women in aviation. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Earhart set many flying records and supported the Equal Rights Amendment. She also encouraged women to pursue opportunities and reject restrictive social norms, particularly in aviation. On July 2, 1937, Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.
✈️ Recommend a book tagged Adventure, Mystery, or Suspense, or with a character whose occupation is traditionally associated more with the opposite sex (male nurse, female firefighter, etc). You may also recommend a book with the sky visible on the cover of any edition

Katharine Hepburn (1907 - 2003) - Katharine Houghton Hepburn, also known as “Kit”, was an American actress and advocate for women's rights. Her career spanned six decades and she starred in Hollywood classics like Adam's Rib, The African Queen, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. The American Film Institute named her “the greatest female star” of Classic Hollywood Cinema. She has won the most Academy Awards of any actor or actress with four wins, all for Best Actress.
🎥 Recommend a book with a character who is somehow involved in the performing arts (actor, musician, dancer, etc.) or a book that has won or been nominated for any literary award, or with a 4 in the page count or publication date.

Babe Didrickson Zaharias (1911 - 1956) - Mildred Ella "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias was an American athlete who excelled in golf, basketball, baseball, and track and field. She won two gold medals and a silver in track and field at the 1932 Summer Olympics before turning to professional golf and winning 10 LPGA major championships.
🥇 Recommend a book tagged as 'Sports Romance' or with an athletic main character. You may also recommend a book with something gold or silver on the cover.

Rosa Parks (1913 - 2005) - Rosa Louise McCauley Parks was an American activist in the civil rights movement, best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has honored her as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".
🚌 Recommend a book with a POC (Person of Color) main character, or with a character who experiences or works to fight against discrimination in any form. You may also recommend a book with a mostly red, black, green and/or yellow cover.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg (1933 - 2020) - Joan Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020. She was nominated by President Bill Clinton to replace retiring justice Byron White, and at the time was viewed as a moderate consensus-builder.
👩‍⚖️ Recommend a book with a character involved in the legal profession, either working or studying. You may also recommend a book with a mostly black and/or white cover.

Please read through and follow the tips in Post #1 to help insure you choose books your pickee will be excited to read.

Have fun, everyone!

LaurLa | 5085 comments Hmm - I'd have to go with Eve Dallas as well for fictional character, or Kate Daniels! Amelia Peabody also gets my vote!

A real life heroine - Princess Diana, I think. I also admire Dolly Parton for all that she gives back and she is incredibly talented.

〰️Beth〰️ (x1f4a0bethx1f4a0) | 283 comments So excited to be back doing challenges. For historical figure I would say Queen Elizabeth I. Though I think LaurLa has great current/ modern choices, both amazing women. As for fictional, I am going with BethanyAnne from The Kurtherian Gambit Universe and MC of the original series. A woman who kicks ass in high heels, but has compassion, a sense of humor ( a love of creative cuss phrases) and loves classic rock…. then she gets to be super human with an alien and AI implant and true love with a vampire….. genre mash up heaven! Sorry long answer 😁

Romance was my only genre for a long time so there is a massive TBR back log. Apologies if it’s overwhelming, I took 2 yrs away from GR and am just starting to get back into the upkeep of my shelves. My Romance TBR: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

There is also a PIFM shelf that is a small shelf for another group, feel free to pick from it as well if something catches your eye. It has a few books with romantic themes so that might help. I made all my romance shelves “sticky” so they are the top shelves. Hopefully that makes it easier to look over my books.

message 11: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 31544 comments I'm in! For historical figures, I would probably say Susan B. Anthony or Margaret Sanger. Though Dolly Parton is a great answer - she does so much!

For favorite romance heroines - Eve Dallas, Kate Daniels, Cat Crawfield, Sam Holland, and, and, and... (It is so hard to narrow that down - I'm sure I'm forgetting some!)

Please use my Please use my to-read-asap shelf - thanks!

Great for Heather but I would have loved 16 more books for my TBR❣️I did add the Berry Pickers to my reading list for this month since it was on Karen’s message. Looks like a good read. Might ask you to send me the list if you still have it. There are never too many books….says a book addict.

And just to clarify KarenH, LaurLa hasn’t listed my picks yet, Heather has done her picks for LaurLa. Not a complaint just a clarification. Any given month I am in no rush, posting them after the first of the month is fine with me but I know the challenge has rules. That being said, if you need back up pickers I am available.

You're right, and thanks for letting me know - I put the ✔ next to the wrong person on my list and that's all it took to totally confuse me! I'm sure LaurLa will be along with your picks before too long, 😃still a couple of days left before the deadline!

Thanks for the offer to help with repicks...I'll definitely take you up on it if needed!

〰️Beth〰️ (x1f4a0bethx1f4a0) | 283 comments Darn less than half the participants have listed and I see my TBR growing because of all the great books choices…. Is this why my Romance TBR was over 700 books even after a two year hiatus from challenges? 🤣🥰🤣 Let me also emphasize that I also didn’t read much in 2022 so that contributed to it not going down….😁🤣💖
