“You made a bargain...
Your soul for his―and now, you are mine.”

Cate Holloway knows the unspoken rule of New Orleans: avoid the powerful Gage crime family at all costs. Of course, that was before her brother got caught in their chaos. Now Cate has no choice but to confront the dark and forbidding prince of New Orleans himself and beg for her brother’s life.

But Lachlan Gage is as lethal as he is beautiful…and the only currency he’s interested in is her soul.

Because Lachlan isn’t just some ruthless criminal. He’s fae. And he has his own secret reasons for binding her to him.

Tricked and desperate, Cate is torn between humanity and the breathtaking Otherworld. A place filled with shadows and secrets, with members of each fae court plotting against her just as her captor’s motives for trapping her become more mysterious.

And if she can’t break this sinister bargain in the next thirty days, she’ll be bound to the inscrutable yet infuriatingly tempting fae prince and his deadly world…forever.

“Worrying is expensive. It costs you the one thing you can’t get back. Time.”

What to Expect:
➼ Fae Royalty
➼ Mafia Vibes
➼ Enemies-to-Lovers
➼ Fae Bargain
➼ Secret Motivations
➼ Morally Gray MMC
➼ Found Family
➼ Touch her & die
➼ Slow Burn
➼ First Person Single POV (snippet of his POV at the end)

Okay, hold up… did I actually love this?? No one will ever claim that this is great literature but it was a highly enjoyable read! It definitely gave me ACOTAR/Night Court vibes but with a mafia twist. Great combo!

Having read most of the Filthy Rich Vampires series, I was curious to see how this would measure up and hoped to find fewer plot holes this time around. So far I am very intrigued by the storyline which ended on a cliffhanger and still has a lot of potential for the author to tap into.

Lachlan Gage is exactly the kind of morally gray book boyfriend we are all constantly in search of and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved the FMC. In Filthy Rich Vampires the FMC talked incessantly about how she could “take care of her self” and would run her mouth and challenge Vampires to duels and such. Dumb. To put in plainly she was pretty insufferable and got more obnoxious as the books progressed.

Cate’s character by comparison is down to earth, fiercely loyal, and very level headed. She was still a little bit rash but only when it came to protecting the people she loved. The ending did feel a bit underwhelming and it looks like the story is heading towards my least favorite romantasy scenario… if you know me, maybe you know what scenario that is 🙃 but I’m doing my best to avoid spoilers. I fear the next book might be a dud, but I’m fully invested now! Only one way to find out!

Gotta say, I’m still a little confused about the ring… Maybe it was less about the ring and more about what the ring was hiding? Too soon to say that this is a plot hole since it would make sense for it to be explained more in the next book, but this author has a track record of explaining things poorly, so I’ll have to flag this question for later review…

✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼

Pre-read: Maybe it’s overly optimistic to think this might be great knowing how badly the author tanked the Filthy Rich Vampires series, but what can I say… it’s Friday and I’m feeling hopeful. 😎☀️😋

i had so much fun reading this, it’s a blend of urban and portal fantasy with a tension filled romance at it’s center. Cate’s a nurse that makes a bargain with Lachlan Gage — whose family is notorious in the crime world, in order to save her brother and take his place instead. little does she know that Lachlan is actually fae and she gets sucked into their world, all while trying to find a way to break their bargain. Lachlan is exactly the kind of mmc i wanted: dangerous, sarcastic and willing to kill anyone over the fmc. their back and forth was taking me out, especially when Cate was embarrassing herself and Lachlan didn’t let her live it down whatsoever 😂. i found both of them so likable and loved the romance.

”I want to take care of you. I know you don’t need that,” he added, preempting my usual arguments. “But someone should take care of you. You take care of everyone else.”

i also really liked the side characters Sienna, Shaw and Roark, Sienna is Lachlan’s sister, Shaw is his younger brother and Roark is his penumbra (aka guardian). Shaw is sooo sweet and was one of the first people to befriend Cate when she came to their world, he must be protected at all costs. Roark was on a mission to cockblock but I’m not mad at him cause he was just looking out for both Lachlan and Cate, that man’s intuition was top notch and then you have Sienna on the flip slide, tryna play matchmaker for her brother. the fae world blended seamlessly with the human one and i liked getting more information on how everything worked and the different royal families. the ending was crazy as hell, I wasn’t expecting things to go so off the rails .. CATE GO GET YOUR MAN, AND HURRY UP!! 😭✋🏽 honestly, i just can’t wait for them to confess their feelings in the next book cause clearly they’re willing to risk everything for one another and i love that for them. this was just so entertaining and i need the next book.

I'm honestly confused how this book has such a good rating. Maybe I'm not reading the same book as everyone else?

This is my first book by this author, and I was interested in it because of the pretty edges, cover, and title of the book. I thought this was going to be a fun read, but I honestly ended up wanting to DNF it by chapter 12. I did end up finishing the book, but it took me way longer than I would have liked it to.

First off, this gave me ACOTAR vibes at first. Just a lot of similarities, which I was here for. It's almost like the book started off okay, then continued to go downhill. I think my main issue with the story was Cate and how inconsistent she was for the main character. One second she would act and think one way, then the next she would act and think another way, and it honestly just felt like whiplash. It almost became normal for me to just expect that even if she said something, she would change her mind within a page or so. But really, I just did not like her. Ever. And that creates a problem when you are reading a book only told from that character's POV.

Now Lach wasn't a terrible character. I actually did like his character at first. But over time, I just didn't like his as much and really he wasn't worth finishing the book for. I thought maybe he would be the thing that would keep me interested, but nope. I really didn't care.

Okay, so now onto the plot...this didn't really interest me. I liked the bargain. But pretty much everything else was very drawn out and made me question when anything of importance would actually happen. I just kept thinking to myself how long this book was and how did I have so much left to read. This book took me eight days to read. Eight. Now while that may seem quickly to some of you, I can read about 20-40 books in one month. So spending eight days on one books is a long time.

There felt like so many inconsistencies as well throughout the book. And I'm okay with brushing off a few, but there was just way too many for me to be comfortable with. For example, cell phones and electronics don't work in the Otherworld or whatever the fae land was called. But then they kept referring to their phones, asking "why didn't you call me," "my cell phone died," "I didn't charge my cell phone," types of things WHILE THEY WERE IN THAT WORLD. If there is no service, how could anyone have called anyone using a phone? This happened a couple times and just bothered me to no end. There were more than just this instance, that was just the main one that bothered me because of how big of a deal they made it in the beginning of the story.

And finally, this book ended in a cliffhanger. Just so you are all aware if you don't like cliffhangers, you might want to wait until the series is released to read this one. I personally don't care what happens to this character and am okay never knowing.

I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.

Was this the best book I’ve ever read? No. Did I thoroughly enjoy every second? Yes.

Fae, humans, modern world setting, bargains, spice, forced proximity, secrets… I mean, yeah.

This one started off pretty strong and I absolutely love captive romance but I struggled with seeing the connection between the two main characters. I feel like the middle of the book fell very flat for me and not much was happening.

I also thought this was going to be a MEGA slow burn but it’s in fact closed door with literally almost no spice. Which is okay, but I was just shocked.

Also- it gave me acotar vibes so that kinda threw me off a bit.

3.5 ⭐️ The audiobook was done well 👏

“You made a bargain...
Your soul for his―and now, you are mine.”

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ urban romantasy
✨ New Orleans and fae realm setting
✨ she’s a human nurse
✨ he’s a fae prince
✨ she offers her soul in exchange for her brother’s
✨ hate to love
✨ banter
✨ lots of sexual tension
✨ denial of feelings
✨ 2.5/5 🌶️
✨ touch her and die
✨ possessive MMC
✨ political intrigue
✨ semi high stakes
✨ TW: foster care, child abuse / SA (past), attempted SA (on page), murder, torture, violence, gore, drug use

My Thoughts:

The story was entertaining. It was a lot grittier than I was expecting. I like the take on fae courts in their own realm as well as how they intersect with ones on earth. I like the MCs! Both were well developed. Kate was ridiculously head strong though, and it was irritating how both of them fought their attraction for the entire book. The romance was lusty from the beginning - where you couldn't tell if they wanted to fight or fuck, or both - but it was such a slow burn. I think they finally have sex around 85%. A bit too slow for my taste. I didn’t realize this was book 1 of a series, so there was a cliffhanger I didn’t expect.

This is a good book. Honestly. But I don’t know if I want to continue the series. Not 100% sure. But I just don’t think the author’s way of storytelling is for me. Could be pacing? Too drawn out when this story is mostly romance driven so there doesn’t need to be so many repetitive arguments or denials of feelings. The couples 'fighting' got kind of annoying or felt a tad contrived in order to create more tension and draw out the inevitable fucking they'd be doing. But if the audiobook is available at my library I’ll read book 2.

PHENOMENAL. I didn’t want to put it down.

There were just enough secrets to keep you guessing, and just enough plot progression to keep you intrigued. The characters were decent. I liked them but I didn’t LOVE them, except Mr. Gage. Lachlan is chefs kiss. Not really morally grey to me but definitely a self sacrifice for those he loves.

Down to the LAST page, I was interested and definitely will be reading the second book thank you very much!

Many people mentioned ACOTAR but I didn’t think about it once while reading this. I wouldn’t care if it was just like ACOTAR, I’d still read it since I love that series anyway. 🤷🏾‍♀️

10/10 would recommend.

2 stars! ⭐

This is a reminder to myself that just because a book is pretty does not mean I will enjoy it.

I want to start by saying that this wasn’t necessarily bad, it just wasn’t for me. I feel like with all the hype around “romantasy” some books just don’t hit the mark on important factors for me personally, and that’s okay!

“We are light and shadow. They are the very elements of our magic. One cannot exist without the other.”

In “Filthy Rich Fae” we follow the POV of our main character Cate. She is a nurse who works at the Gage hospital and will do anything to help people in need, including her brother Channing who ends up being shot, winding himself in her hospital. Cate furiously goes to confront the man responsible for this, Lachlan Gage. However, she accidentally ends up in a deal binding her to him until their bargain is broken or she can solve his riddle. He is fae and has an alternative motive for needing her around. Can they both fight their undeniable attraction to each other?

I caught a glimpse of this while strolling through Walmart with my husband and just had to have it. The beautiful cover, gold foiled title, and beautiful edges drew me in. Not only that but I am a SUCKER for a good fantasy. The first 35% of this book drew me in. The synopsis was exciting, it had a strong opening, and the characters were fun. However, I got LOST in the middle. I felt that this had very little world building, almost no politics, a vague magic system, and put so much focus into the romance that the plot was in fact not plotting. I was getting so tired of the banter between our main characters and felt no connection with them which made me in return not care much for the story.

I know that there is a specific audience this book is for, and it just was not me 😔.

Damnit Geneva, why you gotta do this to me?! I won’t spoil anything but if you cannot handle a huge cliff hanger with no solution in sight anytime soon WAIT!

However, I loved this. I’ll leave in on a quote —

Well, if I didn't already know that I'm a visual learner rather than audio, I surely would now. Once again, my library only had this title available in audiobook format. I think the only reason that I remember enough to write a review at all is because this is complete fluff and there's not a helluva lot to have to recall. This romance is also proof (once again) that paranormal trappings make romance novels enjoyable to me.

I had a good time listening to this despite a lot of repetition and the heroine, Cate, being very nearly TSTL. What a centuries old fae would see in her is beyond me, but I still enjoyed the banter and the story arc. But I swear, if she had “lifted her chin" one more time….. Plus, her foster brother, Channing, is even dumber than she is.

Channing starts the whole plot off by being a stereotypical foster care graduate and getting involved in organized crime. Cate is a nurse and is on duty when Channing arrives in hospital while she's on duty. Despite the fact that the crime boss, Lochlan Gage, pretty much owns Gage Memorial Hospital, Cate decides it would be an excellent idea to go to a sketchy area of town to confront him and settle her brother's debt. See what I mean about TSTL? For reasons of his own, Gage releases Channing and takes Cate's soul instead. The relationship starts adversarial, which is my favourite trope, so I was willing to put up with the stupidity.

Warning to cliffhanger haters: there's a dilly! If my library won't order the next book, I'm going to be forced to spend my own cash (and they've rejected my request to purchase the second book of the Filthy Rich Vampire series, so……). Being weird in my own way, when I realized how much I want to read the next book, that added a fourth star to my rating. Perhaps I'm just as contrary as Cate.

I’m over FMCs where their personality is being combative, snarky, and “not like other girls”.

The world building on this one flopped. I love fantasy books, and I understand they won’t make scientific sense, but there’s got to be some underlying logic so it doesn’t fall apart like a house of cards.

The Otherworld is in… another world? Another dimension? But is directly accessed/underneath this hotel in New Orleans? But only this one specific fae court? What??
There’s no backstory to really explain how this works or make sense. The author just writes it and is like “There, that’s enough. Shhh just accept it.”

I got the sense from reading this that a lot of stuff was put into the book without trying to connect the dots just to further the plot to the next thing.

Anyone who says this has ACOTAR vibes is reallllly loosely saying that. The similarities are fae, courts, and a broody prince. That’s about it.

I went back and forth between the Kindle version of this book and the audio version of this book on Audible and I'm not sure which one I prefer, honestly.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

This book follows our FMC, Cate, as she works as a nurse in Gage Memorial Hospital, which is owned by the Gage family of New Orleans. She has heard all of the rumors surrounding the Gage family and knows to stay away from them.

This all changes when she finds that her brother, Channing, is tied up with the Gage family. She makes a bargain with Lachlan to give him her nights in exchange for keeping her brother safe without realizing the implications it would have on her life, moving forward.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

OMG, Cate drove me nuts! I wanted to hit her over the head for most of this book, to be completely honest. I was so excited to finally be done with the book just so I wouldn't have to listen to Cate's insufferable back and forth.

She's the whole reason I lowered my rating from last year from 5 stars to 3 stars. I normally am not petty like this but I just can't look past her pithy banter with everyone long enough to have a more objective look at this book for a better rating.

That's not to say I won't be reading the sequel because I'll be reading that one as well after I tone down my currently reading a tab a bit more. I had started reading this one again just so I can remember what happened before moving on to the sequel.

I think the only saving grace for this book is Lachlan and his family. I feel the Gage family got a bad rep for all the wrong reasons, though I can understand how and where the rumors started. I'll always believe that rumors like that have some basis of truth in them and this isn't an exception.

I was also glad to see that this series has ties to Geneva's "Filthy Rich Vampires" series, though I wasn't surprised in the least. I don't think I caught the mention the first time I read this book but I'm glad I was paying enough attention during this read-through to catch it.

I would say you should read this book just because I'm hoping this series will be as good as I believe her "Filthy Rich Vampire" series is. I'm biased for that very reason. lol I hope the sequel is just as captivating, though I'm not holding my breath. We'll see.

Wow. Just Wow. I loved this, I didn’t see all those twists coming and right up to a CLIFF. I finally got my Lach POV, hope for more of that in the next. The world building was very good without being overwhelming while still revealing little bits here and there. The clues and hints are there but not so much that you can guess it all and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it all come together. That slow burn to I will walk through hell for you was excellent. I would highly recommend if you love Rhys and Xaden then you better clear out space for Lach, and Cate is as cunning and fiery as Violet and will rival Feyre as a queen. I am obsessed and can’t believe I have signed up for another fantasy series that I have to patiently (not really) wait for the following books.

“Spread your legs for me, princess.”
“Buffet is open.”
“Come with me.”
- Chapter 33.
That’s the only spice. If you even call that spice. My mind is too dirty and sick for that to be the only spice I got in that book.

Okay. Sooo I really wanted to love this book. Because I loved Filthy Rich Vampire (FRV) sooo much. I ate that series up by this author. Now tell me why this book was so poorly written? Because I know the author is a good writer after reading FRV. So why did this book feel so rushed and lacked imagination.

It truly seemed like the author read some SJM books and was like hmph I can do that, but make it modern day.

The story fell so flat after chapter 5 honestly and never got better.
The enemies to lovers just lacked so badly.
The MMC gives the MFC a nickname “princess” and it was so cringe. I literally cringed every time I read it.
I hated it. I wanted so badly to DNF this book but kept hoping it would get better.
I’m honestly suprised this book has such good reviews. We’re all entitled to our own opinion and tastes on books. But this was awful.
0 world building. “THE OTHERWORLD” . lol like at least make up a name for the world. Some effort would have been nice.

But yea def acotar vibes. Could’ve been better.
Probably won’t read anymore in this series.

This was fun, quick contemporary fantasy romance. The fmc Cate has to make a bargain with a fae prince to save her brother who got into the wrong crowd. She enters a bargain that she has to spend her nights with Lachlan who is the fae prince. At first they cant stand each other but as Cate gets to know Lachlan and gets deeper in his world she finds herself liking him more and more. I think this book is more romance focused but there is a bit of world building but not much. This is a slow burn with some spicy moments. I did enjoy the romance and the main characters. It ends in a cliffhanger so i’m here and ready for the next book.

The story did not start strong for me. It was so slow for so many chapters. Nothing happened. Then the magnificent ending. The best part of the whole book happened the last ten percent of the book. It does end with a huge cliffhanger. And so many more questions. I will be reading the next one just to find out some of the answers, I hope. I really hope it answers some of the questions if not I’ll probably be done with this series. It’s not bad, it’s just not good either. I hope it gets better. I really like Cate and Lachlan. The whole fey hiding under a mafia facade was done very well. The different fey courts acting like rival gangs worked very well. I loved the other deadly mythical creatures too. The misdirection of a certain plot twist was also done very well. Again, all happens at the end so stay strong.

finished it and said out loud wait this was good! damn that cliffhanger though. this kept intrigued and locked in - at times there was some repetitiveness but it didn’t bore me at all. there was great tension between the two main characters Cate and Lach (shadow daddy). i loved that the fae courts had counterparts in the real world like the nether court being located in new orleans and other fae courts in other cities. very slow burn but i didn’t mind it cause of the tension…and that thing he did when he tied her hands up…HE WAS NOT SLICKED…that was the moment everything started to click into place with the story and i was on the edge of my seat. such a fun read and twist to other fae romances i’ve read.
