Horror Short Story. About a lion or a panther caged, the narrator gets caged inside by his host. Start of 1900. Read last time in 1995, in an anthological book at school. Spoilers ahead.

I remember reding it as a kid,and I was convinved it was a short story from Edgar Allan Poe but I cannot find it amongst his works.
PLOT WITH SPOILERS
The narrator gets invited by an aquitance to a castle or a mansion. The host is not exactly his friend, I eecall they maybe even have had issues in the past.
The host is a rich gentleman and just come back from an expedition around the world. He wants to show to the narrator this "beast" or big cat, I think a lion, a panther or a tiger.
The host built a special room in the castle for this big beast, and as soon the narrator enters it to admire the beast, the host closes him inside and start to lift the bars separating the narrator from the beast. It is clear that the host want to kill the narrator in a cruel way, making him be maimed from the beast.
The host then leaves, but the narrator jumps on the top of the cage and can escape death. During the night the narrator is able tojump inside the cage and pull de bars between him and the beast, saving himself. When the host reappears, the big feline/beast kills him.
The narrator is safe, but has lost one of his calves, trying to escape from the beast. He is now old, uses a cane but is happy to be alive.
