With political interest growing in the region where I live - the Asia-Pacific neighbourhood - I was glad I chose to read The Gift of Rain, the compelling story of a young half-English half-Chinese boy growing up on the island of Penang off the coast of Malaya, as it was then. Tan Twan Eng's account of this fascinating history and mix of cultures is terrific. No wonder it was so highly regarded when it was published.

On a very different note, It's a Good Life is a creepy short story by Jerome Bixby that was adapted by Rod Serling as a teleplay for my favourite old series, The Twilight Zone.

I finished reading The Seven O'Clock Club, a debut novel by Amelia Ireland. This book is a mesmerizing, emotional story that takes a turn I had no idea was coming. I'm not sure I've ever been so surprised by a turn in a story before. 4.5 Stars My Review.
