Aditya | 2019 comments Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.. This is my new favorite book and Vonnegut might end up as my favorite writer as I read more from him. This powerful satire feels more timely than ever.

James Best (jamesbest) | 307 comments Now about one-third of the way through PRONTO by the late great Elmore Leonard, the novel that introduced Raylan Givens, a tough unconventional U.S. Marshal.

The book, and its sequel, are set in Miami and are prequels of sorts to the FX neo-western crime drama "Justified" which was set in Kentucky and starred Timothy Olyphant as Givens.

Donne | 196 comments I've come across some really great crime thrillers, like this one.

The Best Way to Bury Your Husband by Alexia Casale - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

While this was a good crime thriller, you can disregard the horror label.

Gothictown by Emily Carpenter - https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

In this addition to the 'Inspector Thomas Lynley' series, the Scotland Yard detective and his partner, Sergeant Barbara Havers, help Cornwall detectives solve a homicide.

Lots going on in this book. Good story. 4 stars

Richard Derus (expendablemudge) | 81 comments I finally wrote reviews for my last #Deathtober review blast. It's for the long-running Winemaker Detective Mysteries, set in France and written originally for French TV by JEAN-PIERRE ALAUX & Noël Balen. I read, over the course of a decade, eight of the more than a dozen short novels translated by either Anne Trager or Sally Pane.

They're novellas or very short novels, depending on the story; none take more than three or so hours' reading time. They're all novelizations of scripts from a French show that was on the MHz Network in the teens. That's now a streaming service, but I don't pay for it, so I don't know if they still have the show on their service.

The only place to get the reads is on Amazon, though they have paperbacks of at least some of the stories. I got them from Edelweiss+ over the years. I would've been contented if I'd paid $4.99 for the ebooks on almost every one of them.

I never do this because I know many of y'all (like me) disapprove of it, but I'm not linking to eight separate reviews on GR so here's the list:

Excellent collection. More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary is also good -- maybe not as good, but still really good.

If you like ghost stories, there's a recent one you might find of interest: The Cold House by A.G. Slatter. My GR review is a bit perfunctory. I posted a more fleshed out review here, https://www.sffworld.com/2025/10/sffw...
