Iayn, you never need to apologise for reading an older book! I'm currently trying to avoid most shiny new titles and enjoy some older ones that I know are good and I don't want to miss them.

PattyMacDotComma | 928 comments I like reading about cultures that are foreign to me, so the acclaimed 2017 debut, Stay with Me, by Nigerian writer Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ was exactly what I wanted. A modern young couple is being pressured to produce grandchildren. Having problems? How about you add another wife? We have just the girl - you'll learn to like her.

I've finished reading one of the group read books, Homecoming by Kate Morton. It's a book where I had an inkling of how things would turn out but I just didn't see the hows or the whys behind it all. It's long, but it moves very quickly.

PattyMacDotComma | 928 comments With political interest growing in the region where I live - the Asia-Pacific neighbourhood - I was glad I chose to read The Gift of Rain, the compelling story of a young half-English half-Chinese boy growing up on the island of Penang off the coast of Malaya, as it was then. Tan Twan Eng's account of this fascinating history and mix of cultures is terrific. No wonder it was so highly regarded when it was published.

Laura | 5037 comments This is more a general question regarding books I've read this year. Anyone notice that many books published since Covid, have A LOT of grammar and spelling errors? I notice this especially in smaller publishing houses.

Trust me, I am not the grammar police, as I can barely SPELL grammar correctly, but it's noticeable even to me. Anyone else?

I feel like it comes and goes. I've seen books with quite a few errors (and like you, it's rare I notice them). But then I'll read quite a few that don't have any, at least that I find.

Hopefully, they start being caught again.

some of those smaller publishing houses are ones the self-published authors created for themselves or vanity presses, so I'm always pleasantly surprised when the grammar and spelling are correct. I routinely report errors.

I've started reading The Mouthless Dead by Anthony Quinn. It's based on a real case in 1931 which was never solved. It was unique because the husband was found guilty but he had an unbreakable alibi. He was later acquitted but no other suspects were ever found, so the case went cold. The novel is written from the POV of a British police inspector who in later years is going over every aspect of the case.

Sadly, this book isn't available in the US yet, but I bought my copy at Blackwell's in the UK.

This non-fiction book is about the Galvin family. Mimi and Don Galvin had 12 children (10 boys and 2 girls), and 6 of the boys were diagnosed with schizophrenia. This was a disaster for the family but a boon to medical science.

Bryant and May #5. I'm reading the series in order and this is the weakest entry so far. For a large part of the story we are watching a young mother and her little boy flee from a serial killer. And for the rest we have Bryant and May marooned in a snow storm with little contact with the Peculiar Crimes Unit. Book is just OK -- 2 stars.
