An incredible swordsman loses his memory and travels with a young girl to get his memory back, there is a really odd chess like game featured in the book that the girl is a prodigy at, after some more research I think it may have been Go? The cover was a weird green color and a few hundred pages long at least. Its possible the spine of the book was also very plain and didn't have any words or very few words on it. Please someone help me remember

He awakes in nothing but his black armor with nothing but his sword and that’s all he keeps basically the entire book

There was also something about a war or an army and he was at his best, the number one ranked swordsman in the whole thing, I remember the ranking system being quite the thing even if I can’t explain it lol at the end they were worried if he got his full memories back it would change who he was and he would either become mean or just kill them all.

There was no romance in the book. Lots of sword fighting and strategy.

This would have been published before 2011 for sure but probably before 2009 as the book was read at least 13 years ago and I don't remember it being a new release at the time.

Krystal, is this book for teens or adults?

What are the fantasy elements?

I copied some book details to the topic header. Feel free to edit it.

Krystal | 9 comments It was marketed for young adults I believe. There was magic elements/gods/demi gods. A god may have been the cause of his memory loss.

Krystal | 9 comments still looking. we talked to someone at a book store. they said it had a green cover. and another binding with a blue cover. the little girl who was prodigy at the game beat the general at some point in the book. the person at bookstore also couldn't remember the name of book unfortunately but definitely said the book exists and we werent misremembering things.

Robert | 177 comments There's a long list of novels about amnesia here https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1... , some of them fantasy, like Soldier of the Mist (has other covers for older editions)

Auri (aurific) | 8 comments Omg I think I found it! I really hope it's The Reluctant Swordsman

Krystal | 9 comments Thanks for the suggestions
it's unfortunately not the reluctant swordsman or soldier of the mist. It's a standalone and not part of a series.
